Quest: Hanirac, the Hydra

Boss-fight quest. Printed as the first spread of the Hanirac quest booklet (Introduction, Victory Condition, Mission Description, Hanirac's Turn, Unique Features, Special Features, Sea Snake stat block, map and components).

Victory Condition

Kill Hanirac.

Mission Description

Heroes start the Quest on any square of any number of Stairs Tiles. On the first Round, as soon as the last hero finishes its turn, remove all Stairs Tiles from the battlegrid.

Chests: Regain 10 HP.

Hanirac's Turn

Phase 1: Refresh

End all Temporary Effects Hanirac applied. Put the card that tracked them in Hanirac's Attack Card deck.

Remove all effects the heroes applied on Hanirac. It takes 5 damage for each Permanent Effect removed this way.

Phase 2: High Tide

At the start of all Hanirac's turns, the hero who is closest to Hanirac swaps positions with the most distant one. Then, heroes within 3 squares of Hanirac take 3 damage per Hanirac's Life Tokens.

Phase 3: Regeneration

Hanirac regains 8 HP for every Life Token it has.

Phase 4: Boss Spell

Draw a Boss Spell Card and immediately apply what the Power field describes (no roll required). If you drew the last card of the deck, shuffle all the other cards and assemble a new deck.

The Command field determines Hanirac's behavior on the next phase.

Phase 5: Action

In this phase, Hanirac can take a Move Action and/or a Prime Action, like any other foe.

Randomly draw one of Hanirac's attack cards. Hanirac makes this attack, targeting heroes according to the Boss Spell's Command. The attack card drawn this round does not participate in the next round's selection.

Unique Features

  • Hungry Heads: Hanirac makes an additional Basic Attack after making a Primary Attack, but can only target a hero not yet attacked this turn (at players' choice). This feature ends when there are no Life Tokens on the HP Track.
  • Multiple heads: Due to its increased size, when an attack can target more than one enemy (or when it applies Effects to another enemy), you may count Hanirac as two targets when there are 3 or 2 Life Tokens on the HP Track; and one target when it has 1 or no Life Tokens. Consider as if such targets were adjacent to each other. Roll strikes separately. Deal damage as many times as you hit.
  • Overrun: Hanirac is Hastened and ignores the Slowed Condition (this is not an Effect). When moving, it may pass through all squares, including those occupied by heroes, chests, and walls; however, its movement cannot end on squares occupied by Combatants, Barriers, or Obstacles. If Hanirac passes through a hero, such hero takes 6 damage.
  • Raging Reactions: Whenever Hanirac makes a Reaction Attack, it can also make a free Basic Attack, targeting the hero with lowest HP within 2 squares (this might include the hero who incited the Reaction Attack).
  • Sea Snakes: Each time Hanirac loses a Life Token for the first time, place a Sea Snake adjacent to the last hero that attacked Hanirac. Sea Snakes attack after Hanirac's turn.

Sea Snake

Stat block.

  • Hit Points: 20
  • Basic Attack: 5
  • Defense: 5
  • Movement: 6

Mindless: Sea Snakes can only make Basic Attacks.

Regeneration: If two Sea Snakes are in the board at the same time, sacrifice both and Hanirac regains one Life Token.

Special Features

  • Size: Hanirac occupies nine (3x3) squares. It can be adjacent to 16 squares at once.
  • Reaction Attacks' long reach: Hanirac's Reaction Attacks have a Range of 2 squares. Therefore, you can incite its Reaction Attack if you are two squares away (or directly adjacent to it). Hanirac can make only one Reaction Attack per turn.
  • HP: 280 HP. Learn how to track in the Quest Guide, page 3.
  • Home-field advantage: Hanirac ignores the effects of Terrain Tiles (E.g., lava, altar, portal, ruins).
  • Overlord Perks: see page 3.

Notes

  • The Hanirac material is the first spread of the boss quest booklet only. The Quest Guide (page 3 and the Boss Spell card deck) is not in the source, so the HP tracking method, the Overlord Perks, and the Boss Spell cards are not transcribed. Phase 4 and the Life Token references above depend on those missing pages.
  • Phase 1 of Hanirac's Turn refers to "Hanirac's Attack Card deck" and Phase 5 refers to "Hanirac's attack cards". Those cards are part of the quest kit and are not separately printed in this source.
  • Hanirac's Overrun ability reads "Hastened" and "Slowed" as printed. Those Conditions are defined in the base rulebook.
  • Ascaran's Holy Light Effect 1 reads "-16 damage" on a hit, as printed on the card. Vanarus's Dance of the Damned Effect 1 is marked Temporary (hourglass icon) on the card.
  • Ascaran's Exalted Strike and Wings of Justice carry the Temporary (hourglass) icon on Effect 1, and each is "ends if used" as printed.
  • Circle of Retribution is printed as a passive power ("PASSIVE POWER" label) on both hero cards, with identical trigger and effect text.
