Overview

Note: if you are playing the Zooloretto series for the first time, read the base Zooloretto rulebook first, since this rulebook describes only the innovations of the Zooloretto: Exotic Animals expansion.

Components

Before the first game, carefully punch the tiles out of the perforated sheets. The 9 blank tiles are not used during play, but players may use them to make their own tiles.

  • 40 visitors (8 of each of the 5 colours)
  • 16 square exotic animal tiles (2 of each of 8 kinds)
  • 5 jungle boards (each made of 3 parts)
  • 5 visitor bonus tiles (1 of each colour)
  • 5 reference cards with a short summary of the game

Together with these components, players need the components of the base Zooloretto game. Follow the normal Zooloretto rules, taking the following into account.

Setup

Place the visitor figures and the bonus tiles in a common supply (the bank) in the centre of the table. Since the yellow visitors and yellow bonus tiles are needed only when playing Zooloretto XXL, put them back in the box if you are not using that expansion.

Each player takes a jungle board made of three parts and joins the parts together. Players place their main zoo boards to the left of the jungle boards. Return unused jungle boards to the box.

Each player takes one visitor of each colour and places them on the path in the centre of the main board (the number 2 in the illustration below).

Each player takes a reference card.

Shuffle the exotic animal tiles together with the base Zooloretto animal tiles.

Continue the standard Zooloretto setup (set aside the stack of 15 tiles for the end of the game, etc.).

With fewer than five players, remove some kinds of exotic animals from the game:

  • with 4 players, remove 1 kind of exotic animal;
  • with 3 players, remove 2 kinds of exotic animals;
  • with 2 players, remove 3 kinds of exotic animals.

Central visitor path

The jungle boards enlarge the zoo. Visitors enter the zoo by the central road from the top and move down past the 3 main observation points. Then they pass along the jungle enclosures, where 2 more observation points are located. Finally the path leads them out of the zoo.

Gameplay

(The Russian edition labels these actions with the Cyrillic letters Б and В, kept here as printed. The expansion does not restate the base game's other actions.)

Б. Take One Truck and Pass Until the End of the Round

Exotic animal tiles

The background on the front of exotic animal tiles differs from the background of the animal tiles in the base Zooloretto game. When a player places an exotic animal tile in their zoo, they must follow these rules:

  • A player may place an exotic animal only in a free space on their jungle board.
  • Important: a player may have at most 3 kinds of exotic animals on their jungle board.
  • If a player cannot or does not want to place an exotic animal tile on the jungle board, they must place it in their storage.

Moving visitors

Each time a player places a kiosk or an exotic animal in their zoo, one or more visitors move according to the following rules.

  • When a player places a kiosk on the kiosk space, they must move one visitor whose colour matches the colour of the kiosk 2 observation points forward along the path. The matching of kiosk and visitor colours is shown on the reference cards.

A player may move a visitor already in their zoo, or take a visitor of the matching colour from the common supply (if one is there) and bring that visitor into the zoo, moving them 2 observation points forward.

Important: if a player places a kiosk in their storage, or moves a kiosk from one place to another using a money action, they may not move a visitor!

  • When a player places an exotic animal tile in their zoo, they may choose the colour of the visitor they want to move. The player may choose either a visitor of a colour that is already in their zoo, or a visitor of a colour that is still in the common supply. They follow the same visitor movement rules described above. Then each other player who has a visitor of the same colour in their zoo must move that visitor back to the previous observation point (1 observation point backward).

If a player has several visitors of the chosen colour, they must decide which one of them to move.

If a visitor leaves the zoo while moving backward, the player must place its figure in the common supply.

When a player moves a visitor past the last observation point on the jungle board, they receive the bonus tile matching that visitor's colour. The player places it face up in front of them. If the bonus tile of that colour has already been taken earlier by another player, the player receives nothing.

When a visitor leaves the zoo, the player returns it to the common supply.

If a visitor leaves the zoo already on the first of the two moves, the second move is forfeited.

Example: Anya places a red kiosk (the Russian text prints "кисок", a typo for "киоск") in her zoo. She moves her red visitor 2 spaces (1). Since the red visitor leaves the zoo, she returns it to the supply. Anya receives the red bonus tile as her reward and places it in front of her.

After that she places an exotic animal tile in her zoo. Anya decides to choose a red visitor from the common supply and bring it into her zoo, moving it 2 observation points (2). In addition, Serezha and Zhenya must move their red visitors in their zoos back 1 observation point.

В. Use Your Money

The money action "Exchange" cannot be performed with exotic animals. All other actions involving tiles, namely moving, buying and discarding, can be performed with exotic animals in the same way as with ordinary animal tiles.

End of the Game

Scoring

Players score points for exotic animals as follows:

  • For exotic animals located on their jungle board, the player scores "0" points.
  • For each kind of exotic animal located in their storage, the player scores "-2" penalty points.

Players score points for visitors as follows:

  • The player scores "2" points for each visitor colour in their zoo; the number of visitors of one colour does not matter.
  • If a player has a visitor bonus tile, they score "2" points for each visitor of that colour located in their zoo.

Other Important Rules

  • A player may place exotic animals only on the jungle board.
  • Exotic animals may not be exchanged during money actions.
  • The number of movement points for a visitor may not be divided between two visitors.
  • If a visitor leaves the zoo while moving backward, the player does not receive the bonus tile.
  • If a player places a kiosk and has no visitor of that colour in their zoo or in the common supply, they cannot carry out the "visitor movement" action.
  • Other players must move their visitors back one observation point if they match the colour of a visitor moved by one of the players as a result of adding an exotic animal tile to their zoo.
  • Even if a player moves a visitor only one step after placing an exotic animal in their zoo, the other players must move their visitors of the same colour one step back.

Animal Reference

The animal reference in the Russian rules gives a short description of each exotic animal. Animal names are translated from the Russian text.

Pygmy Anteater (Карликовый Муравьед). These toothless animals have very long tongues. Pygmy anteaters live in trees in Central and Southern Africa.

Red Macaw (Красный Ара). These social animals got their name from the sounds they make. They inhabit Central and South America, preferring to feed on seeds and fruit.

Bat (Летучая Мышь). These flying mammals are found on every continent except Antarctica. There are more than 900 species of bats; in Europe alone there are about 40.

Koala (Коала). These marsupials live in the eucalyptus forests of Australia. They spend a lot of time sleeping, but have a very good sense of hearing and an extraordinary sense of smell.

Orangutan (Орангутан). These large great apes live in the rainforests of the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. The name of these herbivorous primates comes from a Malay word that translates as "forest person".

Baboon (Бабуин). These African monkeys spend most of their lives on the ground, but also climb very well and prefer to return to the trees to sleep.

Common Smooth Snake (Обыкновенная Медянка). These harmless snakes live in Europe and Western Asia. They are often confused with the European adder. The length of the common smooth snake is approximately 80 cm.

Emerald Monitor (Смарагдовый Варан). Although it is one of the smallest kinds of monitor lizards, emerald monitors grow up to 1 metre in length. They live in the rainforests of Australia and New Guinea.
