Components
- 25 dungeon tiles
- 4 player tiles
- 1 crown tile
- 2 character tokens
- 30 treasure tokens
- 14 eye tokens
- 15 health tokens
- Dungeon tiles. The 25 dungeon tiles are used to create the dungeon level you will explore.
- Player tiles. The 4 player tiles are placed in a 2 by 2 grid and are used to conduct combat.
- Treasure tokens. Treasure tokens are placed face down and are obtained during the game.
- Character tokens. The character tokens represent the player. One is used to move across the dungeon tiles, and the other is placed on the player tiles and used during combat. There is a female and a male side to choose from.
- Eye tokens. Eye tokens are taken every time you land on an eye icon, in the dungeon or during combat, or if you draw a treasure with an eye on it.
- Health tokens. You start with all 15 health tokens, and at no time can you have more than 15.
- Crown tile. If you manage to reach the crown in the dungeon, you take the crown tile.
Goal
Your goal is to infiltrate Zogar's lair and retrieve the stolen crown, without being seen by Zogar himself and without being destroyed by his minions.
Setup
- Build the dungeon by removing the tile with the stairs on one side and the crown on the other, as well as the four tiles with lamps on them. Shuffle the remaining 20 dungeon tiles (it doesn't matter which side is up). Now build the dungeon in a 5x5 grid as shown in the diagram, placing the lit lamps in each corner, the stairs tile in the center with the stairs side up, and the remaining dungeon tiles in the other places in random order. Try not to look at the dungeon tiles while placing them, so that the journey through the dungeon is a surprise for you! Place one of the character tokens on the starting tile (the stairs). Additional, more difficult dungeon layouts can be found in the corresponding section of these rules.
- Lay out the four player tiles as shown. Place the second character token on the tile marked with the number 3. Take all 15 health tokens and place them next to the player tiles.
- Place all the treasure tokens face down in an easily accessible place and shuffle them well.
Place the eye tokens in a stack next to the treasure tokens. Finally, place the crown tile next to the treasure tokens. Now you are ready to play!
Gameplay
The game consists of moving from room to room (from tile to tile) in the dungeon. You can move to any adjacent tile, but you cannot move diagonally. At the start of the game all four lamps are lit, and this affects how tiles are flipped during exploration. During the first phase, you move to an adjacent tile and flip the tile you just left behind. That way, you see where your character is moving, but the room you are leaving changes behind you. NOTE: You do not flip the stairs tile when you leave it. The stairs tile is flipped later, when you put out all four lamps.
Your first task is to put out all four lamps, located in each of the four corners of the dungeon. When the character token lands on a lit lamp tile, it is immediately flipped, revealing the extinguished side of the lamp tile, while the character is still in that location.
When all four lamps are out, the stairs tile is flipped, revealing the secret room with the crown! Your new task is to reach the crown. However, as soon as all four lamps have gone out, the way you move and flip tiles changes. Now you must flip the tile you plan to move onto, and leave the tile you left behind unchanged. This is to simulate moving in the dark. As soon as you reach the crown in the center, you take the crown tile.
Now you must relight all the lamps to reveal the stairs, by which you can escape. The way you move and flip tiles stays the same until all four lamps are lit again, and then everything returns to the way it was at the start of the game. Make your way to the stairs, and if you succeed, you win!
Exploring the Dungeon
There are three main types of dungeon tiles you will encounter while exploring.
- Monsters. When you land on a tile showing a monster, you must defeat it in combat or die trying. Combat is described in the next section.
- Treasure. Many tiles show a treasure chest. When you land on one of these tiles, you must take a random treasure token. NOTE: Some of these tiles show an eye. When you land on one of these tiles, you must take an eye token and a treasure token.
- Zogar's Gaze. Every time you land on a tile with Zogar's piercing gaze (a large eye), you must take an eye token. If at any point in the game you take the last eye token (there are 14 in total), you are captured by Zogar himself and lose.
Treasure Tokens
- Crosses can be spent to avoid taking an eye token.
- Potions can be spent to restore 1 lost health token.
- Swords can be spent to increase your attack value during combat by 1.
- Coins, which are found often, are added to your score at the end of the game.
- Traps deal 1 damage. Ouch!
- If you find an eye icon, you must have made too much noise opening the chest, and you need to take an eye token.
Combat
Each monster you fight has a strength value shown on its tile. Your goal is to deal enough damage to destroy it before it can strike back. Damage is dealt by moving the character token across the player tiles. You can move the character token to one of the adjacent tiles, but not diagonally, and whatever value you land on is the damage you deal to the monster. You must immediately flip the player tile you left behind.
If the value you land on is equal to or greater than the strength of the monster you are fighting, you destroy it and take no damage. However, if you fail to destroy it, you lose 1 health token. Now you must move the character token again to try to destroy the enemy, adding the new result to the previous one (don't forget to flip the tile you left behind). If the sum of both results is high enough to defeat the enemy, you can move on. If not, you lose another health token. Repeat this, adding to the previous sum, until either you defeat the monster or you lose your last health token, at which point you die and lose the game.
Landing on an eye icon on your player tiles results in taking an eye token.
Scoring
Count the value of all the coins you have collected from treasure chests to get your base score. Then you can add another 10 points to your score for retrieving the crown, and another 10 points if you manage to escape the dungeon with the crown and win the game.
Don't forget to check out the additional dungeon layouts, which will make the game even more challenging!
