Components
- 75 JUNGLE CARDS, consisting of:
- 64 TREE CARDS
- 11 PARROT CARDS
- 4 double-sided ROOT BOARDS
- 32 PUBLIC TASK CARDS (8 cards in each of 4 colours)
- 43 PRIVATE TASK CARDS
- 80 PARROT tokens in 4 colours
- 12 GOLDEN PARROT AWARD (GPA) tokens
Cards marked with a small "3+" or "4" in their bottom-right corner are removed for games of fewer than 3 or 4 players during setup (see Setup, step 1).
Setup
-
Adjust the number of cards in the JUNGLE DECK to the number of players. Cards that may need to be removed have a small "3+" or "4" in their bottom-right corner.
- Cards without a marking are used in every game.
- Cards marked "3+" are used in games of 3 or 4 players.
- Cards marked "4" are used only in games of 4 players.
- Put the removed cards back in the box; they will not be used in this game.
-
Shuffle the JUNGLE DECK and deal each player 3 JUNGLE CARDS from the top of the deck. Each player may look at their own cards but keeps them secret from the others. Then place 3 JUNGLE CARDS face up next to the JUNGLE DECK; these form the market of available moves.
-
Give each player a ROOT BOARD. The boards are double-sided and differ in their scoring conditions. Side A is the basic variant and side B is the advanced variant. We suggest using side A in your first game. Once you are familiar with the game, each player may freely choose which side (A/B) to play. See page 10 for the scoring conditions of the boards.
-
Shuffle the PRIVATE TASK DECK and deal each player 3 PRIVATE TASK CARDS. Keep PRIVATE TASKS face up on the left side of your ROOT BOARD during the game. Then place the PRIVATE TASK DECK where all players can reach it.
- Note: If this is your first game, deal each player only 1 PRIVATE TASK CARD (instead of 3).
-
Divide the PUBLIC TASK CARDS into 4 piles according to the colour of their back, and shuffle each pile separately. Deal and place below each pile the number of cards given in the table below. Turn the dealt cards to the side showing the tree crowns and slide them so that the icons are visible.
Number of players
Game Overview
The game lasts a maximum of 16 rounds. During them, starting with the FIRST PLAYER and then proceeding clockwise, each player takes turns made up of actions resolved in the following order:
- Play a card from hand.
- Carry out the actions available on the card.
- Complete TASKS (OPTIONAL).
- Draw TASKS (OPTIONAL).
- Draw a JUNGLE CARD.
The game ends in one of two cases:
- at the end of round 16, OR
- when any player completes 4 PUBLIC TASKS and thereby finishes the 4th tree above their ROOT BOARD. Finish the round in that case, so that every player has made the same number of moves in the game.
Then each player totals their PRESTIGE POINTS for tasks, awards and the final arrangement of parrots on their trees. The player with the most points becomes the Photographer of the Month! (See Scoring on page 10.)
Detailed Description of a Player's Turn
1. Playing a Card from Hand
Every card you play should help you catch the perfect shot.
-
1.1 If the card you play is a TREE CARD: place it above your ROOT BOARD on any of the 4 trees. If you place a card on top of a TREE CARD already there, make sure it covers the upper part of the lower card, so the tree forms a single visual whole.
- Note that each trunk on the board has 1 branch, on which you may also place parrots!
-
1.2 If the card you play is a PARROT CARD: place it below your ROOT BOARD, so that it does not get in the way later in the game.
-
1.3 RESCUE ACTION: Discard any JUNGLE CARD from your hand and place it back side up below your ROOT BOARD, in order to either:
- take a PARROT token (of any colour) from the supply and place it on any empty branch on one of your trees, OR
- make any one move with one of your PARROTS (detailed description of the actions below).
Important! If you choose the RESCUE ACTION, you do not perform any further actions from the card in this turn (described in the next step). You may complete tasks.
For better organisation, we recommend keeping your uncompleted PRIVATE TASK CARDS on the left side of your board, and completed ones, placed face down, on the right side.
2. Carrying Out the Actions Available on the Card
Check the icons on the card you have just played – each one corresponds to an action. Actions are voluntary, and you may perform them in any order.
- Add a parrot (red parrot icon with a downward arrow): you may take a PARROT in the indicated colour from the supply and place it on the branch of the TREE CARD you have just added.
- Add a parrot (red parrot icon): you may take a PARROT in the indicated colour from the supply and place it on any empty branch in your jungle.
- Move a parrot (four-arrow icon): you may move a PARROT in the indicated colour to any other empty branch in your jungle.
- If an icon shows several colours, the action applies to a PARROT of any colour.
3. Completing TASKS (OPTIONAL)
When you see the perfect shot, reach for your camera and snap a photo! You may complete PRIVATE and PUBLIC TASKS in any order, but make sure you fully resolve the effects of each task before starting the next one.
Completing a PRIVATE TASK
- If the parrot arrangement shown on one of your PRIVATE TASK CARDS is met, take a photo and place that card face down on the right side of your ROOT BOARD. It will give you points at the end of the game. When completing a PRIVATE TASK, look only at the spaces that show a parrot symbol. Parrots of other colours do not get in the way of completing the task.
- Shutter: After completing a PRIVATE TASK, you must immediately return to the supply the PARROT token of the colour shown in the bottom-left corner of the card (the shutter scares the parrots away). You may take this token from any of your trees.
- Note: You may complete several photos in one turn and complete more than one PRIVATE TASK. However, you must complete each card fully, one after another, in the order you choose (this matters when returning parrots to the supply).
Completing a PUBLIC TASK
- If the parrots on one of your trees meet the requirement of an available PUBLIC TASK CARD, you may take one of the available crown cards lying below that task (in the same colour) and place it on top of the tree, ending its exploration (no new cards may be added to such a tree).
- On a PUBLIC TASK CARD, in addition to Prestige Points (shown as a black square icon), you may find a GOLDEN PARROT AWARD (shown as a gold coin icon), as well as one-time actions: add a parrot, move a parrot, and remove a parrot (icons shown in that order). Adding and moving a parrot are optional; removing a parrot is mandatory.
GOLDEN PARROT AWARD
A perfect shot is always a chance for extra Prestige Points!
- Under each tree on your player board, there is information about which colour of PUBLIC TASK will earn the GOLDEN PARROT AWARD. If you meet this condition, take a GPA token from the supply and place it on the crown of the just-completed tree. The GOLDEN PARROT AWARD gives an additional 5 Prestige Points at the end of the game.
Important! During your turn you may complete only 1 PUBLIC TASK CARD.
Removing a parrot (mandatory): When the removal icon appears on a card, you must remove a PARROT token of the indicated colour from any of your trees and return it to the supply.
4. Drawing TASKS (OPTIONAL)
If you have fewer than 3 PRIVATE TASK CARDS, you may draw 2 cards from the PRIVATE TASK DECK, and then keep one of them. Think carefully, though, because every uncompleted task costs you negative points at the end of the game.
- Note: If this is your first game, always draw 1 new PRIVATE TASK CARD after completing a PRIVATE TASK, so that you always have 1 available.
- Note: You cannot complete the PRIVATE TASK CARD you have just drawn during this same turn.
5. Drawing a JUNGLE CARD into Hand
At the end of your turn, draw a new JUNGLE CARD. You may choose 1 of the 3 available cards in the market, or the top card of the JUNGLE DECK. If you took a card from the market, fill the empty space with a new card. The next player then begins their turn.
Example of a Turn
Note: The printed example on page 7 shows ROOT BOARD "A" in its illustration. The official Muduko errata states that it should show board "A2". The example steps below follow the errata text for step 6.
- Kamila manages to recreate the parrot arrangement from her PRIVATE TASK and decides to complete it.
- While she takes the photo, the shutter scares one of the parrots, and Kamila must remove any blue parrot from any tree. She decides to remove the blue parrot from tree 4.
- She moves the completed task card to the right side of her ROOT BOARD – she will receive 5 points for it at the end of the game.
- Kamila also notices that she is able to complete a PUBLIC TASK – she has gathered 6 yellow parrots on one tree.
- She chooses one of the available crown cards in the same colour and places it on top of the tree.
- Next, she checks whether she is entitled to the GOLDEN PARROT AWARD. She looks at the colour of the PUBLIC TASK she completed (in this case – yellow) and checks whether it is marked under the tree on which she gathered the required parrots. On this tree yellow tasks are rewarded, so Kamila receives a GOLDEN PARROT AWARD worth 5 points at the end of the game.
- Kamila must remove one yellow parrot from any of her trees, according to the icon on the crown card.
- Kamila will receive 12 points at the end of the game; however, she must remember that no further cards may be added to this tree.
End of the Game
The game ends in two cases:
- at the end of round 16, OR
- when any player completes 4 PUBLIC TASKS and thereby finishes the 4th tree above their ROOT BOARD. Finish the round in that case, so that every player has made the same number of moves in the game.
Tip: To help you keep track of the number of turns left until the end of the game, the JUNGLE DECK can help. The moment you draw the last card from the JUNGLE DECK, the last round of the game remains for you. From then on, do not draw cards at the end of your turn.
Scoring
Regardless of how the game ended, proceed to count the PRESTIGE POINTS that the "Błysk" magazine awards in 4 categories:
- PRIVATE TASKS: Each PRIVATE TASK CARD shows how many PRESTIGE POINTS the player receives for taking a photo of the parrot arrangement shown on it.
- For each uncompleted PRIVATE TASK CARD, the player loses 3 points.
- PUBLIC TASKS: Each PUBLIC TASK CARD shows how many points the player receives for photographing the entire tree with the indicated parrot arrangement.
- GOLDEN PARROT AWARDS: Each GOLDEN PARROT AWARD token is worth 5 points.
- MATCHING PARROTS TO THE TREE SPECIES: On the ROOT BOARD, under each tree, there is a marking for the scoring of the final parrot arrangement.
- In the basic version (A), each parrot in the marked colour that is on that tree gives 1 additional PRESTIGE POINT.
- In the advanced version (B), each set of parrots in all four colours (red, blue, yellow, green) that is on that tree gives 4 additional PRESTIGE POINTS.
The player with the most PRESTIGE POINTS becomes the Photographer of the Month of the "Błysk" magazine!
If there is a tie, the player with more completed PUBLIC TASKS wins. If the tie persists, the player with more GOLDEN PARROT AWARDS wins. If the tie still persists, the tied players share the victory.
Solo Variant
The game is played according to the basic rules for 2 players, with the following changes:
- After drawing a JUNGLE CARD, remove the other JUNGLE CARD lying furthest from the deck. Then slide the remaining card to the last position, and place 2 new cards from the top of the JUNGLE DECK into the free spaces.
- At the end of rounds 5, 9, 12 and 15, remove the crown card with the highest number of points.
Note: If you end the game by completing 4 PUBLIC TASKS, add 5 PRESTIGE POINTS to your score for each round that remained for you until the end of the game.
Compare your final score with the table below to see how you did:
| Points | Rating |
|---|---|
| 80+ | Photographer of the Month of the "Błysk" magazine! |
| 70–79 | Cover photo! |
| 50–69 | Great work! |
| 30–49 | You are getting better at the craft! |
| 20–30 | Looks like you forgot to open the aperture! |
| 0–20 | Something went wrong with the film – develop it once again! |
Note: The printed table lists 30 in both the "30–49" and "20–30" rows. It is transcribed as printed.
The publisher's website offers a specially prepared scoring notepad to download, which will help you count rounds and points.
