Objective

In Yuncos: El lado oscuro de la luz, the players take on the role of Yuncos that must navigate the coasts of Choros Island. To win, they must score the most points by eating fish, navigating by the stars, and completing the nest and luminary puzzles, all while avoiding crashes into the city's light sources and other obstacles.

Components

  • 1 game sheet per player (Hoja de juego)
  • 1 pencil per player
  • 2 six-sided dice

Setup

  • Place the dice within reach of all players.
  • Give each player a game sheet and a pencil.
  • Each game sheet includes two challenge levels: Easy and Hard. Before starting, the players must agree which version they will play, and use only that section of the sheet during the game.
  • Each player then chooses and marks, in secret, one of the starting points on Choros Island. Once everyone has marked a point, collect all the sheets, shuffle them, and deal them out at random among the participants.
  • In solo mode, simply choose and mark your starting point before beginning.

Start of the Game

The game is played in simultaneous turns. A player is chosen at random to roll the dice first, and the role of dice roller may rotate among the participants.

How to Play

On each turn, one player rolls the dice and all players share that result. With the numbers obtained, the players must perform the following actions:

  • Draw a flight pattern
  • Fill in a puzzle

1. Draw a Flight Pattern

To perform this action, choose one of the dice values and draw the flight pattern corresponding to that number, moving along the corners of the squares that divide the map. During the flight, try to pass over the fish and star icons to score points at the end of the game.

  • First turn: Start the line from the starting point you marked on Choros Island.
  • Later turns: Continue the flight from the point where your previous line ended.

Fish and Stars

During the flight, try to pass over the fish icons and star icons to score points at the end of the game.

Each time your flight pattern passes over a fish, you must mark a fish on the fish counter, located on the right side of the game sheet. As you gain more fish, you accumulate points for the end of the game, and you gain abilities that you may use during the game (see the "Abilities" section).

Stars come in different colours (or letters). When a player passes over a star, it is not recorded on a counter within the game sheet; instead it is counted at the end of the game, during scoring (see the "Scoring" section).

Crashes

Crashes occur when a Yunco becomes disoriented and crashes into an object. There are three types of crashes:

a) Crashes into luminaries: These occur when passing over a light point.

b) Crashes into obstacles: These occur when crossing your own flight pattern, even at a single point. If in the same turn you cross your own flight pattern two or more times, it counts as a single crash.

c) Crashes into the ground or the sea: These occur when you cannot place a number in the puzzles (see the next section, "Fill in a Puzzle"), because its restrictions cannot be met.

Each time a crash occurs, mark one of the crash counters from left to right. These counters subtract points at the end of the game. If there are no spaces left on which to record new crashes, the player is automatically eliminated from the game, as they no longer have a Yunco to keep flying.

The crash track has the values 2, 5, 9, 14, 20 and 27, from left to right.

2. Fill in a Puzzle

The value of the second die (the one not used to draw a flight pattern) must be used to fill in one of the puzzles, either Nests or Luminaries:

a. Nests

Nests represent the holes in the ground that the Yuncos dig on Choros Island. Each female Yunco lays only one egg.

The nest puzzle on the game sheet has two rows that must be filled from left to right, without skipping spaces.

  • The first row must be filled with different numbers, regardless of whether they are higher or lower.
  • The second row must be filled with numbers in descending order, from highest to lowest.

Every 2 numbers filled in the same row grant an ability (see the "Abilities" section). In addition, you score points at the end of the game for each nest filled.

b. Luminaries

Luminaries represent the city's light sources. As the puzzle is filled, the city changes its more heavily polluting lights for lights that cause less light pollution, which allow the Yuncos to keep their orientation while flying.

This puzzle is filled by columns, from bottom to top, making sure that the upper number is greater than the lower one and that numbers do not repeat horizontally.

Completing a column grants an ability. You also score points at the end of the game for each completed column.

Abilities

As players complete the puzzles or eat fish, special abilities are unlocked. During the turn, a player may use all the abilities they wish and have available, and may even add their effects together if they are the same. Each time an ability is used, mark it to show that it cannot be used again.

  • Add or subtract on the die: you may add or subtract one from any value of the dice rolled in a round.
  • Diagonal flight: you may draw one additional diagonal, either before or after drawing the flight pattern.
  • Yunco: you may avoid marking a crash.

End of Turn

Once all players have drawn their flight pattern and recorded a number in one of the puzzles, the turn passes to the

End of the Game

The game ends when any of the following circumstances occurs:

  • A player completes both puzzles.
  • A player returns to any point on Choros Island, as long as they have passed through a minimum of four stars.

Scoring

Record all points obtained during the game on the score counter as follows:

  • Fish: Each time a route passes over a fish symbol, the Yunco eats it, and a mark must be made on the fish counter, starting with the lowest box and continuing in ascending order, without skipping spaces. The score for eating fish is the number shown next to the last box marked on the counter. For example, if a player managed to eat 6 fish, they score 12 points for this.
  • Star Navigation: At the end of the game, players gain one point for each star obtained. These points are multiplied by the number of different colours of these stars. For example: 5 stars x 4 colours = 20 points.

Winner of the Game

All scores obtained during the game must be recorded on the score counter as follows:

  • NESTS: Two points for each space filled with a number in the nest puzzle.
  • IMPROVED LUMINARIES: Six points for each completed column of the luminary puzzle.
  • FISH: The number next to the last box marked on the fish counter.
  • STAR NAVIGATION: Multiply the number of stars obtained by the number of different colours (or letters) of those stars. This is the score for Star Navigation.
  • CRASHES: The last value marked on the crash counter.

After recording all scores, these must be added or subtracted as appropriate, and the final result noted. The player with the highest score is the winner.

Score total: Nests + Luminaries + Fish + Navigation − Crashes = Total.
