Goal of the Game
Yum Yum Island is a cooperative game in which you must feed the animals of the island by dropping Food tokens into their mouths... without being able to see anything! Once an animal is completely fed, it is saved. The game is won if all the animals are saved before the giant's throat is full!
For 2 to 5 pelicans, ages 6 and up, 20 minutes of flight.
Contents and Setup
- 1 giant (Ferdinand!) - place him in the centre of the table.
- 4 trees (easy to assemble) - place one tree at the end of each hand and foot of Ferdinand.
- 12 animals - for a first game, take the lion, the spider, the panda, the kangaroo and the female elephant, then place them randomly around the giant. Your island is ready!
- 1 giant turtle - place it between 2 and 5 cm from the island's animals, in front of the first player (the youngest), head to the left (in the direction of turn order) and the pelican takeoff strip facing the island.
- 70 Food tokens, pink (meat, fish, insects) and green (grass, leaves, vegetables, fruit) - fill the supply on the turtle's back with these tokens without sorting them.
- 5 pairs of aviator goggles - each player takes a pair, passes the elastic behind the head, and keeps the goggles pushed up on the forehead while waiting for their turn to take off!
- 1 die - each player uses it in turn during the game.
Cocow, our space mascot, accompanies you through this booklet, giving advice and instructions to get the most out of the game.
Turn Sequence
Once the giant turtle is placed in front of them, between 2 and 5 cm from the island, the squadron leader for the turn (the active player) rolls the die and applies the effect of the face shown:
Food and talking face (speech bubble with a green and a pink token). The squadron leader must immediately take one green Food token and one pink Food token from the turtle and place them in the giant's mouth. Then they try to feed the animals (see How to Feed the Animals). The other players may help the active player by talking to them!
Cocow's instructions: When the die shows the speech bubble, the other players may talk to help the squadron leader feed the animals. To help them, you can say anything that seems useful, for example: "to the left", "to the right", "forward", "back", "higher", "lower", "stop", "drop", etc. If the notions of left and right are not clear enough, you can also say "towards such-and-such player", or use elements of the room you are playing in: "towards the door", "towards the kitchen", "towards the sofa", etc. It is forbidden to touch the active player's hand or arm to try to guide them.
Silence face (crossed-out speech bubble). The squadron leader must try to feed the animals (see How to Feed the Animals), but the other players keep quiet and cannot help by giving directions!
Island face (island with an arrow). The squadron leader chooses an animal that has at least one Food token in its mouth and saves it. Beware: if no animal has any food, no animal can be saved. Then the squadron leader rotates the die following the direction of the black arrow and must perform the action of the new face.
How to Feed the Animals
In agreement with their squadron, the player chooses the animal they want to feed. They then locate on the turtle the Food tokens they need, then lower their goggles to hide their eyes (the weather conditions are particularly difficult around Yum Yum Island). They are ready for takeoff!
The player must now, with eyes covered and in a single trip, take one or more Food tokens from the turtle (with one hand only, forming a stack) and then drop them directly into the mouth of an animal.
All Food tokens that do not land directly in an animal's mouth (on the table, on the giant, or on the animal outside its mouth) are immediately placed in the giant's mouth and pushed along his throat!
Each animal has a particular diet, green or pink (except the pig, which eats everything!): if Food tokens that do not match the animal's diet land in its mouth (wrong colour or surplus token), they too are placed in the giant's mouth.
(Illustrated on the page: a green token marked "5" = 5 green tokens; a pink token marked "3" = 3 pink tokens - the number of tokens of that colour an animal needs.)
Cocow's instructions: Beware, if the squadron leader accidentally touches the table or any other game material (except the turtle and the trees), the other players shout "CRAAAASH!". The player must then immediately release their cargo and their turn is over. The pelican got too dangerously close to the ground and ends up with its beak in the sand!
Once an animal has received EXACTLY all the Food tokens it needed, it is SAVED. The animal AND its Food tokens are removed from the game and placed in the box.
Certain animals, like the lion and the spider, trigger a special effect when they are saved. The description of these effects is on the last page of this booklet.
When a player has finished their turn, the next player (clockwise, in the direction of the turtle's head) slides the giant turtle in front of them and becomes squadron leader. It is their turn to play and roll the die.
Example of a Turn
It is Cocow's turn to play. She is squadron leader for this turn, rolls the die and gets the Food and talking face.
- As the die face indicates, Cocow starts by placing 2 Food tokens in the giant's mouth, then pushes them along his throat.
- Next, Cocow and her squadron mates decide together which animal Cocow will try to feed. As the die face shows the speech bubble, she may be guided by the other players. The female elephant is missing 3 green Food tokens to be saved!
- Cocow visually locates the surroundings and the tokens she must take from the giant turtle's supply, then lowers the goggles over her eyes.
- Cocow takes 2 green Food tokens and 1 pink one (oops!). Then, guided by the other players, she tries to feed the female elephant.
- Once the food is dropped, Cocow lifts her goggles and realises her flight was not a great success: 1 pink token was dropped in the elephant's mouth (and she does not like that at all!) and 2 green tokens outside. These 3 tokens therefore join the giant's throat! This time the elephant will not be saved, but Cocow will do better next time!
Cocow's Tips
The trees: There are 4 trees on Yum Yum Island. They serve as landmarks for the pelicans. During their trip, a player can therefore use the trees by touching them. But beware: if a tree falls, it is uprooted and placed in the game box until the end of the game.
The takeoff strip: The giant turtle is equipped with a state-of-the-art takeoff strip! Before taking off, the player can aim the strip towards an animal they want to feed and thus touch it to get their bearings once their goggles are lowered. Beware: the strip must never be in direct contact with an animal (the turtle must be between 2 and 5 cm from the island).
End of the Game
The game is won when ALL the animals have been saved.
However, if the giant's throat is so full that no new Food token can be added to it, or if there are not enough Food tokens left in the turtle's supply to feed the animals, the game is lost!
Animals with Effects
Certain animals trigger effects when they are saved (completely fed, or saved thanks to the island die face). Animals with effects are identifiable by the yellow numbers and outlines.
- Lion: The lion bites the giant's behind, and he jumps in the air: the lion is placed under the giant, who is lifted to the height of the trees and dropped flat. All tokens that come out of his throat are put back in the box. If some animals pick up along the way Food tokens matching their diet, so much the better for them!
- Spider: The spider tidies up the turtle's supply: the Food tokens may then be sorted, with the pink tokens placed on one side and the green ones on the other.
- Gorilla: The gorilla scares the other animals by beating his chest with joy! Remove one green token from the mouth of each animal when the gorilla is saved.
- Beavers: The beavers cannot help felling the 4 trees, which are put back in the game box. They can therefore no longer serve as landmarks.
- Boas: The boas hypnotise the other animals of the island. As long as the boas are not saved and removed from the island, no animal can trigger its effect when saved.
- Baby elephant: The baby elephant is placed on the female elephant at the start of the game and completely blocks her mouth. The baby elephant must therefore be saved first before the female elephant can be saved, as she will never leave without her son!
And Afterwards?
If you want to increase the difficulty level of later games, you can add 1 or 2 animals and/or replace those of the initial setup with any other available animals (see Animals with Effects). And nothing stops you from inventing your own effects!
