Rules for 2 Players
(For 3-4 you will use these rules PLUS the additions on the back.)
Setup
Each player will take a set of 11 company cards.
Shuffle the Consultant cards and deal two to each player, face down. Players will look at theirs and and shuffle them with their other cards to form their deck. The remaining consultant is secretly removed from the game.
Draw three employee cards from your deck to form your starting hand. If either player draws the Boss in their starting three employees, they reveal this card, draw a fourth card, then shuffle the Boss back into their deck.
NOTE: Each player has three areas of gameplay:
Deck (off to either side of their playing area).
Break Room (a discard pile, face-up, next to their Deck).
Unemployment Line (a line of cards that have been fired, face up).
The player with the most soul crushing job goes first.
Goal
Eliminate your opponent's boss before they eliminate yours.
Turn
On your turn, you will draw one card from your deck, then play one of your cards from your hand. You must always do both of these actions, in this order, if able.
Draw a Card
If you have less than 4 cards in hand, continue drawing until you have 4.
NOTE: If your deck does not have enough cards to draw, you do not reshuffle. Instead, you will just stop drawing.
Play a Card
Most cards are played and then placed in your "break room" face up. When you play an employee, carry out their listed effect, then place them in your break room.
Some employees must be fired to carry out their effect. When an employee is fired, it is placed face up in your Unemployment Line.
Other employees have a "Reactive" ability. These cards are played in response to an opponent's action, and may take place during your opponent's turn.
If you have no employees that you want to play, you may instead play one directly to your break room without activating its effect.
Shuffling the Break Room
There are only two ways to shuffle the break room into the deck.
A card may allow you to do so, such as the Fall Guy. However, this requires that you fire him.
If your opponent attempts to fire your Boss and fails for any reason, you must shuffle your hand, break pile, and deck together to form a new deck, then draw a new hand of 3 cards.
Replacing Fired Employees
When one of your employees is fired you will immediately draw to replace it. This may happen during an opponent's turn.
End of the Game
The game ends when a player's Boss is fired or played to the break room (without successfully firing their opponent's Boss). At this point, the game ends immediately and the other player wins. This may happen as the result of the player having to play their Boss because they have no other cards in their hand.
Rules for 3+ Players
Setup Changes
Shuffle the consultants and deal one to each player face down; discard the rest.
Gameplay Changes
You may target any player with your abilities.
Employee Ability Changes
For any employee's ability that refers to "your opponent", play it as though they said "target opponent". For example, if you play an Axe Man, you must name both an opponent and an employee that you think is in their hand.
With employees such as the Secretary, your target opponent only reveals cards to you.
End of the Game Changes
When any player's Boss is eliminated, that player is out of the game. All players must then shuffle their hand, deck, and break room – then draw three new employees to their hand.
4 Player Team Variant
Use the 3+ players rules, but with a few additional changes.
Setup Changes
Players choose a teammate. Teams should sit alternating so that the first player to take their turn is on the same team as the third player to take their turn.
Employee Ability Changes
Any information you gain may not be communicated in any way with your partner, either verbally or non-verbally.
The Boss's Spouse cannot bring back the Boss.
Whenever a player reshuffles their hand, deck, and break room for any reason they must pass all of the employees in their hand to their partner.
End of the Game Changes
Unlike the 3+ Player Rules, when one player's Boss is fired, that player is not eliminated. That player fires their Boss, passes the rest of their hand to their partner, and reshuffles their break room and deck. Then, they draw a new hand. This player remains in the game and may play cards as normal.
When a player runs out of employees in their hand and cannot draw, they are still in the game, though, as they have no employees, they cannot play. However, if their partner passes them employees, they can then resume play as normal on their next turn.
The game ends when both Bosses from either team have been fired. The other team wins.
