Components

  • 20 Yokai cards (5 of each color, with values of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 Yokai points on the front)
  • 36 sketch cards (24 double sketches and 12 double sketches with a special ability)
  • 1 rulebook

Objective of the Game

Score more Yokai points than the other player.

Setup

Shuffle the sketch cards and deal three to each player. Leave the rest of the sketch cards face down in a deck in the center of the table.

Shuffle the Yokai cards of each type separately. Place each deck next to the others, with the numbers on the cards visible.

Each player takes a side of the row of Yokai decks. A discard pile is kept next to the Yokai decks for spent sketch cards.

How to Play

The starting player is decided at random. Play then proceeds in turns, one after the other.

A turn is made up of a first phase in which the active player draws a sketch card from the deck, taking it into their hand. If the sketch card deck runs out, the discard pile is shuffled again to form a new deck.

In the second phase, the active player may play one to three cards next to one of the Yokai, or next to several different ones. If a player has four sketch cards in hand, they are required to play at least one onto the table. If they have fewer than four, they may pass their turn without playing any card.

Playing Cards

When a player plays a sketch card, they place it next to one of the Yokai decks so that the half of the corresponding color lies next to that deck (always on their own side of the table).

Completing a Sketch

If, by doing this, the Yokai reaches or exceeds the number of sketches needed to draw it (adding together the sketches on both sides of the card), the player who has accumulated the most sketches on their side of the table takes it, forming a pile of Yokai cards in their sketchbook. The winner's sketch cards are placed on the discard pile, and the other player's sketch cards stay where they are, since they will be used for the next Yokai card of that type from the following turn onward.

If there is a tie in the number of sketches on both sides of the card, the Yokai gets scared and is lost: that card must be placed underneath its deck. In this case, neither player completes the drawing, and all the sketch cards on both sides of that Yokai deck are discarded.

Once a Yokai's drawing is completed, a new Yokai card of that type is revealed. Play continues as normal.

Play continues until one (or several) Yokai decks run out of cards. At that point, the game ends.

End of the Game

When the game ends, the players add up the points of the Yokai they managed to draw. Whoever has more points wins the challenge. In case of a tie, the winner is whoever has accumulated more different types of Yokai in their sketchbook.

Special Abilities

Some sketch cards have special abilities, which players may choose to use or not when they play the card.

Call the Yokai

When playing this card, the player may take the top card of any Yokai deck and place it on top of the Yokai deck next to which they placed their sketch card. This Yokai is considered to belong to the color of the deck the player moved it to (that is, the color of all the sketch cards played on that deck).

ATTENTION: the last card of a deck cannot be taken this way.

Distract the Yokai

When playing this card, the player may remove the last sketch card played on their opponent's side next to this Yokai, placing it next to the discard pile of the other color that matches the card removed. Any ability that card may have is ignored.

Example of Play

Player 1 has played a green sketch card, thereby reaching the four sketches needed to complete the drawing of the green Yokai -Iju- (three on their own side and one on their opponent's side). Player 1 completes the Yokai's drawing, takes that Yokai card, and places their three sketch cards on the discard pile, leaving the opponent's green sketch card on the table.
