Yogi + Yogi Guru
Yogi Guru is made to be played on its own but also to enrich your experience of the game Yogi. To do so, simply shuffle the two sets of cards together. The card backs of the two games are identical to keep the suspense when drawing, but you can easily sort the two games apart if needed, since a symbol appears on every card of the Guru version.
Principle and goal of the game
On their turn, players draw a card and perform the challenge shown on it. The instruction must then be followed for the whole duration of the game. Cards accumulate, and a player who can no longer respect one of their constraints is eliminated. In the end, only one will remain!
Setup
The cards are shuffled and then divided into two piles, which are inserted face down into the card holders. These card holders must be placed on the table so that all players can easily reach one of them.
The most zen player starts, then the game proceeds clockwise.
Note: with young players or beginners, it is recommended to remove the purple cards.
Course of the game
On their turn, the player:
- draws the top card of the card holder of their choice;
- reads its instruction aloud;
- gets into position to respect the instruction, without ceasing to follow their previous obligations (if they already have any).
Then it is the next player's turn.
Card types
Green card (example: "A finger touches the table."): must be placed face up in front of the player who drew it so that everyone can know the others' challenges.
Orange card (example: "This card touches the forehead."): is used to respect its instruction.
Blue card (example: "Before drawing, drum on a deck of cards."): must be placed face up in front of the player who drew it (like green cards). Its instruction must be followed every time the player draws a card.
Purple card: a special card. When a player draws one, it is the player to their right who must complete its instruction (the symbol on the card marks the blank). They may complete it with the element of their choice as long as the instruction remains feasible.
For example, Baptiste draws the card "A hand on [blank]." Lucas, his right-hand neighbour, completes it and announces: "your knee". Baptiste must therefore have a hand touching one of his knees until the end of the game. Lucas could also have said: "a hand on the head of your left-hand neighbour" or "on the underside of your chair...". As long as the challenge is achievable, anything goes, so use your imagination!
Depending on the instruction, purple cards are either placed face up in front of the players concerned (green/blue hand) or used to respect the instruction (orange hand).
It is possible to use items to help yourself, such as slipping the card into a piece of clothing, but part of the card must necessarily remain visible.
Note: the illustrations on the cards are only indicative. Players may find other ways of meeting the instructions.
Elimination
If a player fails to follow the instruction of one of their cards, even momentarily, they are immediately eliminated. It is nevertheless possible to change position as long as the instruction remains respected.
Everyone must be honest and admit if they are eliminated. But do not hesitate to call out a little comrade who has failed in one of their missions!
If a player cannot draw a card on their turn, they are eliminated.
End of the game
The last player remaining in the game wins.
Sadistic variant
Shuffle the cards and deal 2 to each player. Place the card holders so that everyone can easily reach one of them.
On their turn, the player:
- plays a card from their hand by placing it in front of another player, who must then start respecting the indicated instruction;
- draws a card.
Then it is the turn of the player who has just received a card, etc.
The last player remaining in the game wins.
Team variant
If there are many players, it is recommended to play in teams of 2 or 3. It does not matter if some teams have more members than others. When it is a team's turn, it must draw as many cards as there are players in that team. Any player of the team may draw. Then at least one player of the team must respect each of the team's instructions. It is possible for 2 members of the same team to follow the same instruction to be safer or to take over from a teammate. As soon as an instruction is no longer respected by one of the team's members, the team is eliminated.
It is possible to play in teams using the normal game mode or the sadistic version.
