- 1 game board
- 16 game pieces in 4 colours
- 1 symbol die
A fun dice game for 2 to 4 children aged 3 to 7.
Setup
Place the game board in the middle of the table so that all players can see it and reach it easily. Then each player chooses 4 game pieces of one colour and places them on the start spaces of the same colour on the game board.
Keep the die ready to hand.
Sequence of Play
The player whose birthday is next begins by rolling the die. Afterwards, you take turns clockwise.
To start, you must roll the Yakari symbol. Then place one of your game pieces on the Yakari space of your colour and roll again immediately. You may now move forward to the space showing the symbol you rolled. Then pass the die to the next player.
Turn Structure
A turn always consists of rolling and moving!
If you roll the Yakari symbol, you may either:
- move to the next Yakari space; or
- place one of your game pieces from the start space onto the Yakari space of the matching colour.
Whenever you roll the Yakari symbol, you may roll again, whatever you did with it. This way you can travel quite a long way in one turn!
Attempts to Roll the Yakari Symbol
As long as all of your game pieces are still on the start space (and no game piece is on the track), you have 3 attempts to roll a Yakari symbol.
You also have 3 attempts if, during the game, one of your game pieces has reached the finish but your other game pieces are still on the start space.
The Symbols on the Die
The die has 6 different symbols:
- Yakari
- Circle
- Sun
- Wave
- Feather
- Square
Sending Pieces Back to Start
Only one game piece may stand on a space. If your turn ends on a space that is already occupied by another game piece, that piece is sent back to its start space.
Compulsion to Move (Zugzwang)
A turn is only forfeited if you need one specific symbol to reach the finish space and no other game piece can alternatively move along the track.
Winning the Game
The first player to take all 4 of their game pieces onto the finish spaces of their own colour wins the game.
Yakari and his friends congratulate the winner warmly!
Tips for Younger Players
You may also play without sending pieces back to the start! If your turn ends on an occupied space, jump over that game piece and place your piece on the next free space showing the rolled symbol.
Keeping track of all 4 game pieces is not easy for younger players! Simply start with just one or two game pieces.
