Game Setup
To play World Wonders with the Natural expansion, follow the standard game setup, using the New Maps included in this expansion and placing the Player Markers and Gold Nugget on the indicated space of the Expulsion Track. After completing the regular setup, modify the remaining Monument Card Deck as follows:
Divide the remaining Monument cards deck into three piles. Then, add the Gold Nugget & Barbarian Cards (which share the same card back as the Monument Cards) according to the number of players, so that both the first and second piles contain the following number of cards:
- 1–2 players: 4 cards each
- 3 players: 6 cards each
- 4 players: 8 cards each
- 5 players: 9 cards each
Next, shuffle 3 Gold Nugget & Barbarian Cards face down into the first pile. Then shuffle another 3 Gold Nugget & Barbarian Cards face down into the second pile. Finally, stack the three piles together, placing the first pile on top, the second pile in the middle, and the third pile (the one without any added cards) on the bottom.
Shuffle the 8 Natural Cards included in this expansion and reveal a number of cards equal to the number of players plus one. For example, in a 3-player game, reveal 4 cards. Starting with the last player and proceeding in reverse turn order until the first player, each player chooses one of the revealed cards. This becomes their Natural Wonder for the game. Immediately after choosing, each player places their Natural Wonder on the map, completely covering the Placement Markers printed on the board. The game is now ready to begin!
Gold Nuggets and Barbarians
The Gold Nugget & Barbarian Cards are shuffled into the Monument deck. Whenever one of these cards is revealed during the game, it immediately indicates whether Gold Nuggets, Barbarians, or both are added to every player's map. Then, reveal the top card of the Location deck to determine where they are placed. This card indicates which Natural Resource (for Gold Nuggets) and/or Building (for Barbarians) receives the corresponding token on every player's map. After resolving the effect, discard both cards and reveal a new Monument Card as normal.
The Location Cards use arrows to indicate which Building and/or Natural Resource near the edge of the map receives the Barbarian and/or Gold Nugget. For example, a card may indicate that the Barbarian is placed on the rightmost Building on the map, while the Gold Nugget is placed on the Natural Resource closest to the Sidewalk. If more than one option qualifies, the player chooses any eligible one. On the Location Cards, the sidewalk, always at the bottom, indicates which edge the arrow is pointing toward.
Barbarians and Gold Nuggets may only be placed on available Buildings and Natural Resources—that do not already contain a Barbarian or Gold Nugget and are not completely surrounded. In the rare event that there are no available Buildings, Barbarians may instead be placed on City Districts or on Buildings that already contain one or more Barbarians.
For a simpler game, ignore the Gold Nugget & Barbarian Cards entirely and play using only the Natural Wonders.
Barbarians
Barbarians enter your map to increase the cost of placing pieces and reduce your final score.
- Any piece placed adjacent to a Building occupied by a Barbarian costs 1 additional Gold. If the piece is a Monument, it instead costs 1 additional Gold Nugget, which must be paid.
- City Districts (completely surrounded Buildings) occupied by Barbarians do not score Victory Points at the end of the game.
Gold Nuggets
Gold Nuggets provide players with additional purchasing power during the game and Victory Points at the end. Each Gold Nugget is worth 1 Gold and may be used as payment whenever you spend Gold. You may combine Gold Nuggets with the Gold on your Gold Track in any proportion. For example, when purchasing a Building that costs 4 Gold, you may pay with 4 Gold Nuggets, or with 3 Gold from your Gold Track and 1 Gold Nugget from your supply. Gold Nuggets cannot be used to purchase a Monument, which follows the normal rules.
To collect a Gold Nugget from the map, place any piece or Monument adjacent to it, then move the Gold Nugget to your supply. It is immediately available for future payments. Important:
- A Natural Resource with a Gold Nugget still counts as adjacent, for example when placing a Monument.
- Natural Resources with a Gold Nugget do not score Victory Points at the end of the game.
- Every pair of Gold Nuggets in your supply is worth 1 Victory Point at the end of the game.
Expelling a Barbarian and the Expulsion Track
Expelling a Barbarian from your map is a free action that costs 2 Gold. Choose 1 Barbarian on your map (only one per turn), pay the cost, and return it to the box.
After expelling a Barbarian, advance your player marker 1 space on the Expulsion Track. At the end of the game, you score Victory Points based on the number of Barbarians you have expelled. For example, if you expel 3 Barbarians, you score 3 Victory Points. And the first player to reach the last space of the track immediately gains 1 Gold Nugget.
In addition, once players have advanced on the Expulsion Track, the turn order bonus becomes active! During turn order determination, players who are farther ahead on the Expulsion Track are placed first on the Initiative Track, regardless of their Population or Monument totals. If two or more players are tied, the marker positioned above the others takes priority.
Important: The rules for the 1st and 2nd Place Markers remain unchanged.
Example: The Blue player has already expelled 3 Barbarians and is the farthest ahead on the Expulsion Track. The Green and White players have each expelled 1 Barbarian, but since Green was the most recent player to expel one, their marker is placed above White's. Since no player has purchased the 1st or 2nd Place Markers, the turn order for the next round would be: 1st Blue, 2nd Green, 3rd White. The Yellow and Red players have not expelled any Barbarians, so their positions in the turn order are determined using the normal rules.
Natural Wonders
The cards in this expansion show the abilities granted by the Natural Wonders. These abilities provide Gold Nuggets directly to the player's supply during the game.
Symbols: x5 = Maximum number of activations; (3) = Maximum quantity; Overlap icon = Overlap; Extra action icon = Extra action.
- Amazon Rainforest: Gain 1 Gold Nugget whenever you place any piece or Monument adjacent to a Gold Nugget symbol printed on the Amazon Rainforest. At the beginning of the game, place 1 Gold Nugget on each symbol, and always place the Amazon Rainforest in the orientation shown in the example. (Each symbol may provide only 1 Gold Nugget.)
- Iguazu Falls: Gain 2 Gold Nuggets each time you place a Monument adjacent to a Water space on the map, and 1 Gold Nugget each time you place a Building adjacent to a Water space. (Maximum of 5 activations.)
- Andes Mountains: Gain 2 Gold Nuggets each time you place a Monument adjacent to the Andes or adjacent to another Monument. (Maximum of 5 activations.)
- Mount Everest: Whenever you purchase a Large Building (costing 4 or 5 Gold), gain 1 Gold Nugget or 1 Extra Action this turn. (Maximum 6 activations.) If you choose the Extra Action, it must be taken immediately, and all normal costs must be paid.
- Grand Canyon: Gain 1 Gold Nugget for each Road placed adjacent to the Grand Canyon. For Fragmented Roads, at least 2 Road pieces must be adjacent to this Natural Wonder.
- Table Mountain: Gain 1 Gold Nugget each time your Population marker reaches one of the indicated spaces on the Population Track. At the beginning of the game, place 1 Gold Nugget on the following spaces of the Population Track:
- Player Board – Side A: 1, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12.
- Player Board – Side B: 2, 4, 6, 7, 10, 14.
- Mount Fuji: During your turn, you may choose a Building adjacent to Mount Fuji (provided it is not occupied by a Barbarian), flip it over (destroy it), and leave it in its original space as a free action. This refunds the Building's Gold cost to the player in the form of Gold Nuggets, up to a maximum of 3 Gold Nuggets per Building. The player does not lose any Resources previously gained from this Building, and it may still be used to help surround other Buildings. However, it does not provide adjacency for Monuments placed after it is destroyed and does not score City District Victory Points.
End of Game
The printed rulebook carries no heading over this paragraph; it is placed here as the end-of-game scoring reminder.
At the end of the game, don't forget to score the Victory Points from the Expulsion Track, as well as 1 Victory Point for every pair of Gold Nuggets in your supply.
Modular Maps
This expansion includes 10 new Modular Map Boards, which can be combined to create larger maps. To assemble a map, randomly choose one Top board and one Bottom board, then connect them. The player uses the same side of the board: either the Tundra side or the Arid side. These maps also feature Placement Markers, which must be completely covered by each player's Natural Wonder before the game begins. See the example.
Using the New Maps with the Base Game
If you wish to use the New Maps with the base game without the Natural Wonders, ignore the extra leftmost column and top row. These highlighted spaces act as the edge of the map for the purpose of completing City Districts, just as the map borders normally do.
Playing with Other Expansions
If you wish to play with all released expansions, follow the normal game setup using the New Maps from this expansion, then make the following adjustments after setup:
-
Reveal just 2 Monument Cards and 2 Mundo Cards.
-
Build the Monument deck with the remaining Monument Cards and add the Gold Nugget & Barbarian Cards as described on page 1, but using the following number of cards:
- 1–2 players: 3 cards per pile. Mundo deck: Keep 1 Card and remove the rest.
- 3 players: 4 cards per pile. Mundo deck: Keep 2 Cards and remove the rest.
- 4–5 players: 6 cards per pile. Mundo deck: Keep 3 Cards and remove the rest.
Then shuffle 3 Gold Nugget & Barbarian Cards into each pile, as described on page 1.
-
Deal 2 Europe Cards to each player. Each player chooses 1 Card to keep and discards the other. Return any remaining Europe Cards to the box.
Solo Mode
- Remove the Gold Nugget from the Expulsion Track.
- Gold Nuggets spent by the player are set aside, just like the Monument Cards collected by the Automa, and may score points for the Automa at the end of the game:
- Easy Mode: Do not score the Automa's Monument Cards or Gold Nuggets.
- Medium Mode: Score only the Automa's Monument Cards.
- Hard Mode: Score the Automa's Monument Cards and 1 additional Victory Point for every 2 spent Gold Nuggets.
When playing with the Mundo Expansion, if the solo card instructs the Automa to collect, for example, the rightmost Monument Card, it also collects the rightmost Mundo Card. Refill both cards if possible.
- Medium Mode: Score the Monument Cards and the spent Gold Nuggets.
- Hard Mode: Score the Monument Cards, the spent Gold Nuggets, and 3 additional Victory Points for each Mundo Card collected by the Automa.
