Card Anatomy
Each Wizard card shows, on its front: the card's Attribute (top left), its Magic Power (top center number), its Ability text (lower box), and its Name (bottom right). The back of the card is decorated only with the Wizards Cup crest, so a shuffled deck reveals nothing about the cards within it.
Attribute
There are six attribute icons used on Wizard cards: Fire / Water / Grass / Light / Dark / Non (no attribute).
Preparation for the Game
(1) The Wizard cards are divided by the color of their back. Each player receives all the cards with the same back. The card set received becomes his/her Wizard cards. The contents of the card sets are the same.
(2) Put all the Victory Chips together within each player's reach.
How to Play the Game
The game begins with "0. Selection", followed by a series of "Match".
Matches will be played in the following order: 1. Order of Match, 2. Battle, and 3. Settlement.
The player who wins the first two "Match" wins the game.
0. Selection
Each player chooses 6 of his/her Wizard cards to be used in this game according to the following rules.
(1) Turn your Wizard cards face down and shuffle them well. Then, the other player chooses one card at random and reveals it.
(2) Select 5 of your remaining Wizard cards without letting the other player see the contents. The other cards are not used, so they are put in the box face down.
1. Order of Match
Each player chooses 5 out of the 6 Wizard cards selected during "0. Selection".
Then, the cards are placed in front of the player in the order in which they are to be played, with the card to be played first on top, facing outwards. This is called "the player's deck".
The card that is not played is called the "Sub Card" and is placed face down in front of you.
2. Battle
First, each player reveals the top card of the deck and places it in front of him/her. The space where the Wizard card is placed is called "player's field".
From this point on, the "Win or Lose" and "Next Wizard to battle" phases are repeated until the player's deck is depleted.
Win or Lose
The Wizard on the field wins or loses according to the "Attribute Compatibility" and "Magic Power".
"Attribute Compatibility"
There are six types of attributes for Wizards: fire, water, grass, light, dark, no attribute.
If the attribute of the Wizard in your field is the weakness of the Wizard in the opponent's field, you win the battle regardless of the Magic Power. Weaknesses of attributes are as follows:
- Fire attribute: Weakness is Water
- Water attribute: Weakness is Grass
- Grass attribute: Weakness is Fire
- Light attribute: Weaknesses are Fire/Water/Grass
- Dark attribute: Weakness is Light
- Non-Attribute: No weaknesses
Comparison of "Magic Power"
If the winner is not decided by Attribute Compatibility, the Wizard with the higher Magic Power value among the Wizards on the field wins the battle.
If the Magic Power values are the same, both will lose the battle.
Next Wizard to battle
(1) The Wizard who loses the battle will be discarded.
The discarded cards are placed face up on the side of the player's field, and the discarded card is placed on top.
(2) If there are no Wizards in your field, you reveal the top card of your deck and put it on the field.
Again, the Wizards on the field battle against each other, and the process is repeated.
What if we win the match at the same time?
If, at the time of the "Next Wizard to battle", both players cannot play a Wizard on the field, then both players have won the match. Each receives one Victory Chip.
If each player receives a second Victory Chip at the same time, the player with the smaller total of Magic Power of the six Wizard cards used in the match wins the game.
If the total of Magic Power is also the same, the game is considered a tie.
3. Settlement
If there are no cards in the opponent's field and deck when "Next Wizard to battle", you win this match.
The player who wins the match receives one Victory Chip.
The match starts again from "1. Order of Match". The game ends when one of the players wins his or her second Victory Chip, and that player is declared the winner of the game.
Ability of Wizards
Some Wizards have abilities. They affect the way Wizards battle with each other.
There are three main types of abilities.
Quick — When the card is placed on your field, you can use the ability immediately only once.
Support — When the card is on the top of your discard pile, activates its ability.
Other than the above — When the card is on your field, activates its ability.
What happens if both Wizards have Quick at the same time?
If the Wizards with Quick are placed on each player's field at the same time, the Wizards with the lowest Magic Power will use the ability first. (In this case, the increase or decrease in Magic Power due to Support is not taken into account.)
If the Wizards with the same name (the same Magic Power) are placed at the same time, they both lose the Quick abilities.
Miscellaneous
-
Some abilities include the text "may". These abilities do not have to be used.
-
If the Wizards with the same name are placed on the field at the same time, both Wizards may win the battle with the ability. (Dancer, Blacksmith, etc.). In this case, both players discard their Wizards as if they losed.
-
When a Sub Card is placed on the player's field by the Detective's ability, if the new Wizard has Quick, activates the ability. However, if the Wizard with the same name as the Wizard that your opponent put on the field is put on your field from a Sub Card, neither ability will be activated.
-
When the Revolutionary's ability activates, the top card of the opponent's deck is discarded after the opponent's Wizard who lost the battle is discarded.
-
When the Botanist's ability causes the discard of the opponent's Sub Card, if the Wizard has Support, the ability is activated during this battle.
