Components
- 6 boat tiles
- 8 placement cards
- 40 passenger cards
- 12 event cards
- 1 island tile
Goal of the Game
Collect as many points as possible by ferrying animals and cabbage.
Setup
- Lay out the boat tiles on the table in pairs, and place the island tile slightly to the side.
- Shuffle the placement cards and place them face down in the middle of the table.
- Each player takes 10 passenger cards of one colour. Among them are: 1 shepherd dog, 2 wolves, 3 goats and 4 cabbages.
- Each player shuffles their passenger deck and takes 4 random cards into their hand. Keep them secret from the other players.
- Each player takes the 3 event cards of their colour: "Gust of Wind", "Shipwreck" and "Seasickness". Place them face down in front of you. You may look at your event cards at any time.
Decide which player goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
(The rulebook illustrates the setup for a three-player game.)
Turn Structure
On your turn, reveal the top card of the placement deck, carry out its action, and discard it.
Placement Cards
- Place in a specific boat: Choose one passenger card from your hand and show it to the other players. Then place it face down on one of the boats of the type shown on the placement card.
- Place in any boat: As above, but you choose yourself which type of boat to place the passenger card on.
Event Cards
Now, if you wish, you may play one of your event cards, if you have any left. If you play an event, discard it.
- Shipwreck: Choose a boat and reveal all the cards on it. Discard all the cabbage cards from it. Then move all the animals from this boat, one at a time, to any other boats. Remember to turn the animal cards face down when you place them on the new boats. You cannot place more than three passengers on one boat. A boat that has been wrecked is temporarily out of the game.
- Gust of Wind: Choose a boat. It immediately sails to the island, even if it does not yet have 3 passengers on board. In this way you can send even an empty boat, if you wish.
- Seasickness: Choose a boat and reveal all the cards on it. All the animal cards on it return to their owners' hands. Leave the cabbage cards on the boat and turn them back face down.
End of Turn
- At the end of the turn, any boat with three passengers on board sails to the island. Reveal the passenger cards and apply the Food Chain rule (see below). Discard the passengers who were eaten. Place the remaining cards face down on the island; they are scored at the end of the game.
- A boat that has reached the island is removed from the game, exactly as a boat that suffered a shipwreck. If two boats of one type are removed from the game, immediately return both of them to the game, empty. There must always be at least one boat of each type in the game.
- Draw passenger cards: at the end of your turn you must have 4 such cards in your hand. Once your passenger deck runs out, you can no longer draw cards.
- If you revealed the last placement card in your turn, then at the end of the turn shuffle all the discarded placement cards and turn them face down. This is the new placement deck.
Food Chain
This rule is used only when a boat arrives at the island.
- Wolves eat goats, and goats eat cabbage. (Wolves do not eat cabbage. What are they, crazy?)
- The shepherd dog guards the goats and the cabbage. On a boat with a shepherd dog, the passengers do not eat each other. Your cabbage is safe!
- One wolf can eat two goats, and one goat can eat two cabbages.
- Colour does not matter. Your wolf may quite well eat your own goat.
- If one boat has all three types of passengers (not counting the shepherd dog), the goat eats the cabbage, and then the wolf eats the goat.
End of the Game
When one of the players has played their last passenger card, the game ends at the end of that turn. Add up the points for the cards of your colour that are on the island. The player who has scored the most points wins!
In case of a tie, the contender who has more cards left in hand wins. If the tie remains, the contender who had fewer goats eaten wins.
Simplified Rules for Younger Players
These two rules can be applied together or separately.
- Ignore the points on the cards. The winner is the player who has delivered the most passengers to the island.
- Passenger cards are laid out on the boats face up, one on top of another. Only the top card on each boat is visible.
