Goal
Players representing whales are trying to assemble the strongest army possible. The player with the highest score wins. However, secret human agents will do everything they can to infiltrate the whales and stop the attack.
Game Material
The source shows the game material pictorially. The labelled card types are: Whales, Turtle, Superheroes, Role cards, Superspy and Whale (role cards).
EXPANSION: Put these back into the box.
Setup
-
When playing with less than 5 players, pull marked cards (5+) from the playing deck. Shuffle the rest.
-
Deal 2 face up whale cards in front of every player (to their "army"). While dealing, put aside other cards (superheroes, turtles) and shuffle them back to the deck. Make sure every players starts with 2 random whales.
-
Take as many Role cards as the number of players and make sure exactly one of them is a Superspy role card. Secretly deal 1 card to each player. In 6 players, use all role cards.
-
Decide who will be the first player. How about the player who feels to be a whale the most?
Playing the Game
Players take turns playing in a clockwise manner.
On your turn, draw 2 cards from the deck. Discard 1 card face up to a discard pile. Offer the other card (face down) to a player of your choice, provide "some" information about the card. You may lie and deceive.
Examples of what you may say: "this is a red card", "you need this card", "blue, four", "I need this card back, don't take it" etc.
The other player must choose:
- Keep the card, flip it face up and add it to their army (collection).
OR
- Refuse to take it, send it back. The player who offered it (you) must add it to their army.
Your turn ends when the offered card is put into an army. Next player takes a turn.
Cards
There are 3 types of cards in the playing deck: whales, superheroes and turtles.
The most common card is a whale. It has its strength number in the top right corner and can be sorted into 1 of 3 sets (Red, Blue, Grey) - your army. Every player's army is public information and must be sorted based on color.
At any time, a player can't have more than 2 whales of the same color. A player may have up to 6 whale cards at most during the game. Having 6 whale cards ends the game and triggers the final scoring.
If a player gets the third card of the same color, all 3 cards are discarded. Then they choose any player and steal a card (even a superhero card) from them. If it's a whale card they can only steal the lowest value card from the chosen set (color).
The superhero cards are also added to your army and count as a negative during the final scoring. For every collected superhero card, the whale player will lose one whale card with the lowest value. If ANY player collects three superhero cards, the game ends and the superspy player wins.
Turtles are peace activists who try to avoid war at any cost. Players who is supposed to add this card to their army must discard one card of their own to the discard pile. They may even discard a superhero card. The turtle is also discarded.
Winning the Game
The game may end in these three cases:
- WHALES WIN > Scoring: One player completes a set of 6 cards (2 of each color).
- WHALES WIN > Scoring: A player is not able to draw 2 cards from the deck.
- SUPERSPY WINS: Any player collects 3 superhero cards.
Whales Win - Scoring
For every superhero card in a player's army, they must discard their lowest value whale card. Then the player sums the strength of the remaining cards.
The winner is the whale player with the greatest value. The superspy player cannot compete during scoring.
2 Superspies in the Game (Only in 6 Players)
With 2 superspies in a game, they compete to collect 3 superhero cards in their own army. Only when a whale player has 3 superheroes, they share the victory.
Expansion
How to Play with Extra Cards
"We're ninjas. Technically, we're dolphins."
When you have played the basic game enough, and you wish to add more elements to it you can shuffle dolphin cards into the playing deck or play with new Roles.
Dolphins
Shuffle all dolphin cards into the playing deck. When playing with less than 5 players, make sure to add all superhero cards (5+) to the playing deck. In 5 or more, don't use extra (marked 5+) whale cards. If you wish to play in up to 8, just use all the cards, though we recommend playing with 6 players at most.
Treat dolphin cards like the whale cards.
Card Notes
Transcriber note: the source prints the text of these card notes without a card name. The name of the card is shown only in its artwork, so it is not transcribed here.
During the scoring phase (if Whales win), discard one superhero card from your army. No player can steal this card from you.
When sorted into a set (color), this set holds up to 3 cards. If you get this card as the third of that color, don't discard the set.
Wild card: This card has all colors. When getting it, you must decide in which set to put it. You can't move the card later.
Roles
When creating a Roles deck, make sure there is always at least one whale and one superspy in every game. Other roles than Whales can't win by having the highest score during the scoring.
Dolphin: You win by ending the game with 3 completed sets of cards (2 cards from every color) no matter the score.
Turtle: When you have no whale cards in your army the game immediately ends, and you are the winner.
Sidekick: You join human forces. You immediately win when the superspy player has 3 superhero cards in their army. Superspy loses.
Werewhale: When whales win the game make sure everyone stops and wait. You must try to guess everyone's roles. If you make no mistake, you win the game. Use this role only when playing with 5 or more players.
Tip: To create a Roles deck, start by adding one whale role card and one superspy role card. Then create a separate deck from all the extra role cards you wish to use. Shuffle this second deck and secretly pull as many cards to the first deck so it equals the number of players. Don't look at unused cards.
Reminder
Turn: Take 2 cards, discard 1 face up, offer the other to another player face down.
End: Whales win when someone completes 3 sets (6 cards) or the deck runs out. Superspy wins when any player collects 3 superhero cards.
Goals:
- Whale - Have the best score
- Dolphin - Complete 3 sets of cards
- Turtle - Have no whale cards
- Werewhale - Guess other players' roles
- Superspy - Any player has 3 superhero cards
- Sidekick - Superspy has 3 superhero cards
