How to Use This Set
The following rules increase the difficulty of your games and renew the challenges, in the form of an increased hostile presence and imponderable nightmares. Abominable Intelligence encounter cards are played in two ways, "Fearful" and "Abominable", which are described on the back of this card. Each increases the difficulty of the combats that the explorers wage in the course of a quest. The Fearful level of difficulty is higher than that of a standard game, and Abominable is even more difficult.
If you have the Dreaded Ambull, Traitor Command or Escalation expansions, you will find in this set versions that can be used to try Fearful and Abominable quests with these expansions. If you don't have them, ignore these cards.
Finally, some cards of Abominable Intelligence can ask you for more hostile figurines than you have in your collection; more hostiles are found in the Servants of the Abyss and Cultists of the Abyss boxes. Without being essential to take advantage of the Abominable Intelligence cards, they undeniably spice up expeditions!
The Abominable Intelligence Encounter cards have a symbol so they can be easily identified.
Fearful Difficulty
To play your quests or your one-off games on Fearful difficulty, set up the expedition as described in the Blackstone Fortress Rules book, changing the following:
In step 4, instead of creating the encounter stack normally, replace all of the encounter cards in Blackstone Fortress (or an expansion) with the equivalent encounter cards of Abominable Intelligence.
Example from the card: the standard Ur-Ghuls encounter card (left) has stages 1 to 3 of "4 Ur-Ghuls", "4 Ur-Ghuls" and "3 Ur-Ghuls", with a stage 4 ability, "Terrifying Howls: the cost of the explorers' Move actions goes from 1+ to 2+." The Fearful Abominable Intelligence version (right) of the same card has stages 1 to 3 of "4 Chaos Beastmen and 4 Ur-Ghuls", "3 Chaos Beastmen and 4 Ur-Ghuls" and "3 Chaos Beastmen and 3 Ur-Ghuls", and a stage 4 ability, "Blasé" (translated from the French printed on the card): "When making an Exaltation roll in this combat, the result of the roll must be less than or equal to the highest wound value among the hostiles killed by the explorer at their activation, instead of the total of the wound values."
Abominable Difficulty
To play your quests or one-off games of Blackstone Fortress on Abominable difficulty, follow the rules of Fearful difficulty. Also, after the Deploy Hostiles step, draw an additional Abominable Intelligence Encounter card and apply its twist for this fight.
