Contents

The box contains a deck of 33 cards divided into the following types:

  • Organs: 5 cards
  • Evolved viruses: 9 cards
  • Experimental medicines: 7 cards
  • Treatments: 12 cards

The printed contents list also gives a per-color breakdown of each type as a graphic, which the text layer does not carry, so it is not reproduced here.

The box also includes blank cards so that players can invent their own rules.

Set Up

Add the 33 VIRUS! 2 cards to the original VIRUS! deck and shuffle all the cards together.

Place the bottom part of the box (the quarantine zone) within reach of all players.

To play the original VIRUS! again, remove the cards marked with the symbol in the bottom left corner. (The printed symbol is a graphic that the text layer does not carry; the marking is as printed on the cards.)

Objective and Game Mechanics

To play VIRUS! 2, follow the basic VIRUS! rules: assemble 4 healthy organs in your body to win.

VIRUS! 2 includes some cards that modify the game. The following explains what each card does.

Types of Cards

Organs

You may never have two identical organs in your body at the same time.

Bionic Organ

It cannot be infected by any kind of virus, whether basic or evolved. No medicine may be played on this organ. However, it can be the target of some treatments.

This organ counts as an extra organ of a new color (grey) when forming your body.

You may have up to 6 different organs in your body and win if 4 of them are healthy.

Evolved Viruses

These new viruses are so resistant that they cannot be cured with basic medicines: you need an experimental medicine to eliminate them. You may also use treatments to get rid of them.

Evolved viruses only affect organs and medicines of their own color.

Infect

Place an evolved virus card on a free organ of its own color to infect it. Infected organs are not considered healthy and therefore cannot help you complete your body.

Extirpate

Destroys an infected organ. Place a second virus on an organ that is already infected: that organ is destroyed and the three cards go to the discard pile.

You may extirpate an organ by playing an evolved virus on a basic one (a) or vice versa (b). You may also do it using two evolved viruses (c).

Neutralize

Destroys a vaccine. Use an evolved virus to eliminate a basic medicine of its own color that is on an organ. Send both cards to the discard pile.

Experimental Medicines

Experimental medicines protect your body against both basic viruses and evolved viruses. Use experimental medicine cards only on cards (viruses or organs) of their own color.

Cure

Destroys a virus. Use an experimental medicine card to discard a basic virus (a) or an evolved virus (b) of its own color that is on an organ. Send both cards to the discard pile.

Immunize

Place an experimental medicine on a vaccinated organ to immunize it. It is then protected forever against any virus and cannot be destroyed. Turn the two medicines on the organ sideways to show that the organ is immunized.

Super-immunize

Place a sideways experimental medicine on a free organ to immunize it automatically.

Treatments

These cards are played on the discard pile and take effect immediately.

Overtime

Play the other two cards in your hand. At the end of your turn, draw until you have 3 cards in your hand again.

Second Opinion

Swap your hand with another player's hand. Then you may play one of the received cards, but you may not discard any of them. The other player begins their next turn with the cards you passed to them.

Protective Suit

Play this card during another player's turn. It prevents the effect of a card of any type played against you. Your rival must look for a new valid target among the remaining players, including themselves. If they cannot find one, their card has no effect and is discarded.

You cannot respond to a "Protective Suit" with another one.

Example: If you try to play a virus against a rival and they respond with a "Protective Suit", look for a new player to infect. If you are the only player who has that organ, you must play it against your own body and you will not be able to avoid it using another "Protective Suit".

Do not draw after playing this card; you will begin your next turn with one card fewer in your hand.

If the card affects all players, it takes effect on the others, but not on you.

Example: If you use the "Protective Suit" to avoid a "Latex Glove", you do not have to discard your hand like the other players. When your turn comes, you may play one of your two remaining cards.

Quarantine

Remove a virus card from the game. Cure a basic or evolved virus and keep that card inside the box (the quarantine zone).

The removed card stays out of the game for the rest of the game. Remember to recover these cards for the next game!

Multicolored Cards

VIRUS! 2 also includes new multicolored cards.

Remember that these cards count as wild cards: they always keep the 4 colors and do not replace any other card.

The multicolored organ does not replace any other organ and is always considered a different organ with which you can complete your body.

However, since it has 4 colors, it can be immunized with two different medicines and extirpated with two different viruses, whether basic or evolved.

The multicolored evolved virus, like the basic one, can affect any organ or medicine, but it can also be cured with an experimental medicine of any color.

Multicolored experimental medicines can immunize any organ and cure any type of virus. However, they cannot be destroyed by any kind of virus.

Other Game Modes

Epidemic Mode

To speed up your 6-player games, each time you use an experimental medicine to cure a virus (basic or evolved), discard that virus from the game for the rest of the game. Keep that card inside the box (the quarantine zone) until the end of the game.

Duel Mode

If you want your 2-player games to be more closely contested, you may play until you assemble 5 healthy organs in your body.
