Objective

In Vineyard, you help these friends cultivate and harvest grapes to make and age wines. They'll then load them onto trucks to share with local restaurants, sommeliers, and wine lovers. Every action you take adds a bit of love to the wine or earns the money needed to keep the vineyard running. To win, collect the most stars to show that you had the biggest impact on creating quality wines!

Game Setup

Shared Play Area Setup

  1. Place the Game Board in the center of the play area. Place all of the Coins, Stars, and Checkmarks within reach of all players.
  2. Shuffle the Improved Action Cards and place the deck face-down near the game board. Leave space beside the deck for a discard pile. Draw and place 4 cards face-up beside the board to form the Action Card Display.
  3. Separately shuffle each of the three levels of Train Cards and place each stack face-down near the game board. Draw and place 4 cards face-up from the Level 1 Trains onto the Train Display Spaces from left to right.
  4. Place the 4 Friends onto the Paperwork Space on the game board.
  5. Fill the Draw Bag with all of the Grape Tokens and place it within reach of all players. Leave space near the bag for a Compost Pile, where used and removed Grape Tokens will be placed during play. ! If the bag is ever empty, you will refill it with all of the Grape Tokens from the Compost Pile.
  6. Draw and place 1 Grape Token immature side up onto each space in the Field. Draw and place 1 Grape Token mature side up into each of the three open areas above each Crush Bin.
  7. Separately shuffle each of the three levels of Barrels and place each stack face-down near the game board. From the Level 1 stack, draw and place 3 Barrels face-up onto the Barrel Display Spaces and 1 Barrel face-up into the leftmost Cellar.
  8. Separately shuffle each of the three levels of Truck Cards. Create a face-down Truck Deck near the board that includes (from bottom to top): 1x Level 3, 1x Level 2, and 1x Level 1. Flip over the top card to reveal the active Level 1 truck. Put the unused truck cards back in the box; they won't be used.

Personal Area Setup

  1. Give each player a Player Board, a set of 7 Basic Action Cards, a Reference Card and the Hearts in one color.
  2. Place your Player Board in front of you and leave space beneath it to play action cards.
  3. Each player places 1 Heart on the Barrel in the cellar.
  4. Randomly choose a starting player. Give Coins based on player order and count, going clockwise from the starting player: 2 / 2 / 3 / 3 Coins for 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 players.

Gameplay

Over the course of Vineyard, play progresses clockwise as players take turns using action cards and moving Greta, Joe, Sylvie, and Tomás around the board.

Your choices guide them to collectively make the best wines possible. As you move the friends to different locations, your Hearts may be added to various stages of wine production along the journey from grapes to final, quality wines. In addition, you may guide the friends to greet visitors from the local train and do paperwork to become more efficient at crafting wine. Discover how the greatest wines are produced with teamwork and a lot of love!

By taking specific actions at the right time with these 4 friends, your Hearts will earn you Stars. Once 3 trucks have been loaded up with the Barrels everyone helps produce, the game ends immediately. The player with the most Stars wins.

Wine Production Flow

Transforming grapes into wines is a process with many steps that you'll guide the friends through. Young grapes must be cultivated before they can be harvested. Crafting wine involves not only making it, but aging it in the cellars. Finally, these final creations will be loaded onto waiting trucks to be shared with the world!

Elements of Your Play Area

Your initial hand consists of 7 basic action cards, each of which represents a location on the board: Cultivate, Harvest, Make Wine, Age Wine, Load, Greet, and Paperwork. During the game, you will have an opportunity to upgrade to improved action cards using the Paperwork action. (See pages 21-24) You will always have exactly 7 total action cards.

Your player board consists of a column for each of the 4 friends. During the game, you will be able to spend Coins to upgrade friends and give them bonus abilities. When you place an action card to move a friend, any upgraded bonus abilities associated with that friend may be used. All player boards have the same abilities, but they are attributed to different friends.

Each friend's column on the player board lists that friend's Specialty abilities. Each column has three upgrade slots, marked with a Coin cost of 2, 3 and 4. A slot is unlocked by paying its cost and placing a checkmark over it (see Upgrade Your Player Board below).

  • Tomás - Age Wine Specialty: When you Age Wine, you may move any 1 Barrel 1 additional cellar. After you Age Wine, you may Load 1 Barrel. When you Load 2+ Barrels, you may add 1 Heart to any Barrel on the truck.
  • Greta - Greet Specialty: If you earned at least [Coin] this turn, gain 1 Star. If you earned at least [Coin] this turn, you may Load 1 Barrel. You may complete a second train card. Earn [Coin] less.
  • Joe - Make Wine Specialty: When you Make Wine, use 1 less grape for up to 1 wine. When you Make Wine, you may discard 1 Barrel and add 1 Barrel to the display. Then, add 1 Heart to any 1 Barrel in the display. If you Make 2+ wines this turn, you may spend Coins to Load 1 of those Barrels.
  • Sylvie - Harvest Specialty: Before you Harvest, swap any 2 Grape Tokens. If you Harvest 5+ Grape Tokens this turn, you may place them into 2 different crush bins in any combination. Add 1 Heart to each crush bin. After you Harvest, you may Make 1 wine.

Transcription note: in the source, the Coin amounts in Greta's "earned at least" and "Earn ... less" lines are printed as small coin-token icons whose face values are not legible in the PDF render. They are written here as [Coin] and should be checked against the printed board before relying on the exact amounts.

Playing the Game

During each turn, you will place 1 action card from your hand face-up below a friend on your player board to move the matching friend on the game board. An action card sets the Location where a friend will move to and the corresponding Location Action that will be performed.

A Game Turn

Each turn consists of 4 steps: Place 1 Action Card, Move the Friend, Perform the Location Action, and Complete Cleanup.

  1. Place 1 Action Card. During this step, you decide which location action you want to perform with a friend on your player board. Choose 1 action card from your hand and place it face-up under a friend on your player board.
  2. Move the Friend. During this step, you move the friend on the main board who matches the friend on your player board you placed your action card below. Pick up the friend and move them to the location indicated on your action card.
  3. Perform the Location Action. During this step, you complete the action associated with the location and may use any available abilities. Each location is associated with a different step in the wine production flow. (See pages 12-21) ! If you ever run out of Hearts, you may move 1 Heart from a grape token or crush bin.
  4. Complete Cleanup. During this step, you refill areas of the main board to prepare for the next player's turn.

Action Card & Friend Considerations

  • Every friend on your player board must have 1 action card placed below them before you may place a second action card below the same friend. ! You may never place a third action card below a friend, except Paperwork.
  • The location associated with the action card must have space available. (See Understanding Location Spaces)
  • The friend must move to a new location from their current location, except Paperwork. ! For example, if Sylvie is currently at the Harvest location, you may NOT place your Harvest action card below Sylvie. You must place a different action card below Sylvie, or place your Harvest action card below a different friend.
  • Paperwork can be placed below any friend, regardless of how many action cards are placed below them, and / or if they are already at the Paperwork location. (See Paperwork)

Understanding Location Spaces

Across the board, there are different types of location spaces where friends may be moved to.

  • Large Circle: This location space may contain any number of friends.
  • Small Circle: This location space may only contain 1 friend. Some locations include multiple small circles. An unmarked small circle is available in every game. Small circles with player counts are only used for 3-4 players (three-to-four-player icon), or 4 players (four-player icon). ! Remember, Paperwork is the only action that allows a friend to remain at the same location. All other actions require a friend to move to a new location with space available. A friend may not move from a small circle to another small circle in the same location, as this would be an invalid action for that friend.

Step Four: Complete Cleanup

During this step, you refill areas of the main board to prepare for the next player's turn.

  1. Barrels: If there are less than 3 Barrels, refill the Barrel display from the Barrel stack.
  2. Truck Card: If you scored a truck, discard it and reveal the next truck card, which becomes the new active truck. If this was the last truck card, proceed to Game End & Scoring at the end of your turn.
    • 2a. Train Display & Barrel Display: If there is a new active truck, discard all Train cards and Barrels in their displays and remove the current level stacks from the game. Refill the display spaces with Train cards and Barrels from the next level and use these stacks until the next truck card is revealed.
    • ! The current train card and barrel level will always match the active truck card level.
  3. Train Cards: If there are less than 4 train cards, slide all train cards to the right to fill any empty train display spaces. Refill the train display from the train cards stack.
  4. Action Card Display: If there are less than 4 improved action cards, refill the action card display. If there are ever 2 identical cards in the display, discard and replace one of them.

Game End & Scoring

Once the third truck card is scored, the game ends immediately at the end of the current player's turn. Calculate your score by adding up your total Stars from these sources:

  • Add all Stars you collected during the game.
  • Gain 1 Star per 3 Hearts (rounded down) in your player color remaining on the board.
  • Gain 1 Star per 3 Coins (rounded down) you did not spend during the game.

The player with the most Stars is the winner! In case of a tie, the player with the most Hearts remaining on the board is the winner. If there is still a tie, the victory is shared, like a fine bottle of wine.

Wine Production Actions

Cultivate

Tend to grapes on the vines, grouping like types together, in order to grow a better supply to create quality wines. You will work in the field, possibly moving grape tokens around before flipping them from their immature sides to their mature sides. In this way, you increase the number of grapes available to make wines from.

Rearrange the Field (Optional)

First, you may choose to change the arrangement of grape tokens.

  1. Remove any 1 grape token from the field and set it aside.
  2. Move an orthogonally adjacent grape token to fill the empty space. ! Orthogonally adjacent is up, down, left, or right. Diagonal grape tokens are not adjacent.
  3. Optionally, move another orthogonally adjacent grape token to fill the empty space.
  4. Replace the new empty space with the set aside grape token. ! No grape tokens are added or removed during this step; they move around the field.

Cultivate the Field (Mandatory)

Second, you must cultivate the field by flipping grape tokens and adding 1 Heart to some.

  1. Choose a row or column and flip all immature grape tokens to their mature sides.
  2. Place 1 Heart on any 2 grape tokens in the row or column you chose. You may choose grape tokens that were previously flipped to their mature sides. Each grape token may only ever contain 1 Heart, which may not be replaced. ! If all grape tokens in the field are already flipped to their mature sides, you may still choose to rearrange the field, then place 1 Heart on any 2 grape tokens.

Understanding Grape Tokens & Types

The grape token legend on the board and in this rulebook shows these faces:

  • Immature grape token.
  • Mature grape token.
  • 1 Grape and 2 Grapes faces.
  • Grape types: Green, Red, Purple, White.
  • Sprout and Wild.

! A Sprout and Wild are NOT grape types, which are only Green, Red, Purple, or White. ! A Wild grape token is used to match any other grape type with the Harvest action.

Harvest

Gather fresh grapes from the vines and prepare to process them into delicious wines. You will collect grape tokens of the same type and move them to the crush bins, preparing them to become wine. As more grapes are harvested, more barrels may be made.

Harvest Grape Tokens from the Field

  1. You must choose 1 grape type in the field. Collect all of the grape tokens that are connected (adjacent) to each other. You may not leave any connected grape tokens in the field, including Wild grape tokens. Keep a Heart on a grape token. ! Diagonal grape tokens are not connected. Remember, a grape type is Green, Red, Purple, or White. Sprouts and Wilds are NOT grape types.
  2. Place all of the collected grape tokens and Hearts in a crush bin. Remember, a Heart stays on the grape token it started on.
  3. If you collected 1-3 grape tokens, place 1 Heart on the crush bin. If you collected 4+ grape tokens, place 2 Hearts on the crush bin.
  4. Refill the field from the grape token draw bag. Draw 1 grape token at a time and place each one immature side up, starting at the top left and filling left to right, top to bottom. If the bag is ever empty, you will first refill it with all of the grape tokens from the compost pile and then draw or continue to draw.

! There is no limit to:

  • The number of grape tokens that may be placed in a crush bin.
  • The number of Hearts that may be placed on a crush bin.

Make Wine

Use crush bins to transform specific grapes into wines and begin the fermentation process. You will choose specific grapes to complete the requirements on a barrel and move it into the cellars. The combined choice of grape tokens, crush bin, and barrel is often a main way to add your love to the process.

Complete a Barrel Recipe from a Crush Bin

  1. You must make any 1 wine with matching grape tokens from any 1 crush bin.
    • You may not use grapes from multiple crush bins.
    • You may not create multiple wines, even if there are enough grapes.
    • You must only use the required grapes from a single crush bin and may not add any extra grape tokens that are unnecessary to make the wine.
    • A crush bin is not limited to the closest wine; any crush bin can be used for any wine.
    • Grape tokens with more grapes than required are lost. You may not split grape tokens between wines.
  2. Place all Hearts from the used grape tokens on the wine you make.
  3. Move 1 Heart in each player color present on the crush bin to the wine you make.
  4. Place 1 Heart on the wine you make.
  5. Discard the used grape tokens into the compost pile. ! Any unused grape tokens from the chosen crush bin are not discarded.
  6. Place the wine you make into the leftmost cellar, leaving all of the Hearts on it.
  7. Gain any Stars shown on the barrel.
    • A barrel with Reserve or Special Reserve is a reminder about the Stars shown on the barrel. There is no other impact on gameplay.

! There is no limit to:

  • The number of barrels in each cellar.
  • The total number of barrels in the cellars.

Age Wine

Improve the final taste by slowly aging and fermenting barrels in cozy underground cellars. You will move barrels in order to age them and get them closer to the bottling phase. This flow controls the speed at which trucks may be loaded and often offers the final opportunity to add your love to the barrels.

Move Barrels in the Cellar

You must be able to move at least 1 barrel.

  1. Move all of the barrels in the middle cellar to the rightmost cellar.
  2. Move all of the barrels in the leftmost cellar to the middle cellar.
  3. If you moved 1-3 barrel(s), place 1 Heart on any 1 barrel that moved. If you moved 4+ barrels, place another 1 Heart on any 1 barrel that moved, which may be the one you already added a Heart to.

! Remember, there is no limit to the number of barrels in each cellar.

Load

Transform wine from barrels to bottles, and prepare to send them to their final destinations for customers and collectors to enjoy. You will turn barrels into bottled wines and move them onto waiting trucks. The scoring condition on each truck indicates the most valuable barrels.

Load Barrels in the Cellar (Mandatory)

  1. You must move 1 barrel from the rightmost cellar to the active truck to load it.

    • If this barrel meets the required number of barrels for the active truck, it immediately scores. You may not load another barrel.
  2. Optionally (and if able), you may move another 1 barrel from the rightmost cellar to the active truck to load it.

Load & Score Trucks (If Triggered)

When the active truck is loaded with enough barrels to meet its capacity, it immediately awards Stars to players. This may mean that you will only be able to load 1 barrel. A truck only scores once when its capacity is met.

Truck Cards Overview

  • Truck Level: Used during setup to create the stack of 3 truck cards.
  • Truck Capacity: Indicates the number of barrels needed for the truck to score. Each barrel represents the bottled wines loaded on the truck.
  • Truck Scoring: Indicates the unique way the truck scores for barrels and Hearts, with possible additional bonuses.
  1. For each barrel on the truck, award 1 Star to each player who has at least 1 Heart on that barrel. Then, follow the truck scoring.
    • If there is a tie, all tied players score the full Star award.
    • Truck scoring printed on the cards in the source includes: "Score an additional 2 Stars if you have the same number of Hearts on 2+ loaded barrels." and "Score an additional 3 Stars per loaded barrel you have the most Hearts on. (Maximum 6)".
  2. Cleanup Reminder: After scoring a truck, discard it and reveal the next truck card, which becomes the new active truck. If this was the last truck card, proceed to Game End & Scoring at the end of your turn. (See page 10)
  3. Cleanup Reminder: If there is a new active truck, reset the train cards and barrels.
    • Discard all cards in the train display and barrels in the barrel display.
    • Remove the current level of train cards and barrels from the game.
    • Refill the train display with train cards from the next level and use this stack.
    • Refill the barrel display with barrels from the next level and use this stack.

! The current train card and barrel level will always match the active truck card level.

Greet

Host tours of the vineyard for particular tour groups interested in specific features and wines. You will choose a train card to gain its benefit. Although this is not a step in the winemaking process, there are great opportunities to enjoy a bonus at the right moment.

Gain the Benefit of a Card from the Train Display

  1. You must greet any 1 train card and meet its requirements, if any.
  2. Follow the instructions and collect any benefit(s) indicated on the train card.
    • If you greet the train card in the rightmost train display space, earn +1 Coin.
  3. Discard the train card.
  4. Cleanup Reminder: Slide all train cards to the right to fill the train display spaces. Refill the leftmost train display space(s) from the train cards of the current level.
    • If you run out of train cards, reshuffle the discards of the current level.

Train Card Types

Each card type has a general bonus:

  • Passenger: Earn Coins in different ways. (Passenger cards show: "Earn Coin. You may move 1 Heart to another available space at the same location.")
  • Freight: Use one-time special abilities. (Freight cards show: "You may immediately upgrade 1 friend once at a discount of Coin.")

Paperwork

Work on the behind-the-scenes office tasks to earn money and make the vineyard run smoothly. You will gain back all of your placed action cards, allowing you to use them again, and earn coins to spend immediately. This is an important step to manage your action cards and upgrades.

Earn Coins from Placed Action Cards (Mandatory)

  1. You must return all of your placed action cards to your hand, including Paperwork.
  2. Earn 1 Coin per returned action card, including Paperwork.

Spend Coins to Acquire Improvements or Upgrades (Optional)

  1. You may spend Coins to the supply to acquire improved action cards or upgrade your player board in any combination and any number of times, provided you can afford it. ! This is the only time you may use your Coins. You may not spend Coins at any other time during your turns, unless a card or ability specifies otherwise.
  2. Keep any leftover Coins to use during future turns or final scoring.
  3. Cleanup Reminder: Refill the action card display up to 4 cards. If there are ever 2 identical improved action cards in the display, discard and replace one of them.

Improved Actions & Friend Upgrades

Over the course of play, you will discover ways to improve location actions and unlock special abilities associated with each friend. By carefully choosing the right combination of improved action cards and upgraded friends, you'll ensure the vineyard makes the best wines!

! Improved actions and friend upgrades stack and work together, so you may use any or all abilities that apply to the chosen location action and friend during your turn.

Acquire an Improved Action Card

You will always have 7 action cards, but improved action cards provide bonuses and help you make the friends more efficient as they work on various tasks. For example, to acquire the Cellar Manager improved action card, follow these steps.

  1. Pay the cost shown on the improved action card to the supply. (The Cellar Manager example on the page shows a cost of 5 Coins.)
  2. Exchange 1 action card (except Paperwork) for 1 improved action card that matches the top symbol.
    • You may exchange any action card (except Paperwork) for an improved action card with the Wild symbol.
    • You may exchange an improved action card for another improved action card.
  3. Place the original action card in a discard pile near the action card display and put the new, improved action card in your hand.

Improved Action Cards

Each time you place an improved action card, you may decide how and when to use any bonus abilities. Some cards have specific requirements with a set order that you must follow, while others allow you to make the choice of when to activate an ability.

Place the improved action card under a friend on your player board and move the friend as usual. Follow the card's instructions to gain a bonus or perform a second action. Remember, each time you perform a location action, you follow its usual steps, unless otherwise noted.

If a card allows you to perform a second action, do NOT move the friend to the second location. They remain in the first location space for your entire turn. The second action location does NOT need to have an open space for you to perform the location action.

  • Administrator: Greet. Then, Paperwork.
  • Cellar Hand: Add 1 Heart to any 2 different barrels in the cellars. Then, Age Wine.
  • Cellar Manager: Age Wine OR Load. Then, if the truck was not filled, Load 1 barrel.
  • Cultivator: Cultivate. Instead of placing 2 Hearts, choose any 1 type of grape token (except wild) in the field. Add 1 Heart to each.
  • Early Riser: Harvest. Then, Make Wine.
  • Enologist: Harvest OR Make Wine. Then, Make Wine. Do not refill barrels in between.
  • Fermentation Specialist: Make Wine OR Age Wine. Then, Age 1 barrel, which adds 1 Heart to it.
  • Gardener: Add 1 Heart to any 1 grape token in the field that does not already have a Heart. Then, Cultivate OR Harvest.
  • Logistics Expert: Age Wine. Then, Load.
  • Master Vintner: Make Wine. You may make up to 1 wine from each crush bin. You may not split grapes from different crush bins.
  • Operations Manager: Load OR Greet. Earn +1 Coin for train cards as if they are all in the rightmost train display space. The rightmost train card is still just +1 Coin.
  • Overseer: Harvest. Then, before you refill the field, Harvest again. Each is a separate action.

The page 11 showcase of improved action cards and the expansion previews are part of the rulebook's expansion promotion and are covered by the companion "Expansion Modules & Solo Mode" rulebook; they are not repeated here.

Upgrade Your Player Board

Your player board has a unique arrangement of friend abilities. By upgrading abilities, you gain access to special bonuses when you perform a specific location action with a friend.

  1. Pay the cost shown next to the upgrade you would like to unlock to the supply.
    • You must upgrade each friend from top to bottom. You may not skip over an upgrade.
    • You may upgrade friends in any order. For example, you may upgrade 1 friend completely before upgrading another friend. Or, you may upgrade each friend once.
  2. Place 1 checkmark over the printed cost to indicate the upgrade is unlocked.
    • You do not gain the benefit of the bonus until your next turn. ! Unlocked friend abilities ONLY trigger when that friend performs the associated location action.
