Game Idea

In each round there is one guessing player, who must have a certain term explained to them. In turn, each player gives the guessing player exactly one hint by reading aloud one of 5 given words. The problem is that the words rarely fit the sought term, so the guessing player sometimes has to think quite around the corner to work out the term.

Contents

  • 135 playing cards
  • 5 blank cards

Each card has a term side (Begriffsseite) and a hint side (Hinweisseite), which shows 5 words.

Setup

Shuffle the cards. Each player receives 7 cards, which they place face-up in front of them as their personal stack, with the term side showing.

Note: each card a player has in their personal stack counts as 1 penalty point. Every player therefore starts with 7 penalty points!

Reveal 12 cards and place them in the middle of the table in a 4x3 grid, so that the term side of each is visible; 12 terms are thus visible. The remaining cards are set aside as the draw pile (Zugstapel), term side up.

Gameplay

The eldest player begins (for the entire first round!) and takes the role of the guessing player first. They close their eyes. Their right-hand neighbour now points to any one of the 12 terms on display. The guessing player must work out this term, and all the other players must give them hints toward it.

The guessing player opens their eyes. Now their left-hand neighbour begins: they take the top card of their personal stack and look at its hint side, which shows the 5 words.

They must then read aloud, clearly and loudly, exactly one of the five words shown. The word should fit the sought term, somehow at least … :)

After reading the word aloud, they slide the card back under their personal stack.

The guessing player must now make a solution attempt by tapping with a finger on one of the cards on display in the middle of the table.

If the attempt was wrong, the guessing player must take the corresponding card from the middle of the table and slide it under their personal stack – one penalty point more! Now the next player clockwise is up and must give the guessing player another hint toward the sought word. They take the top card of their personal stack, read aloud one of the 5 pictured words, and slide the card back under their personal stack.

Again the guessing player must make a solution attempt by tapping one of the cards on display in the middle.

If this attempt is also wrong, the guessing player must again take that card from the middle and slide it under their personal stack – once more a penalty point!

In the manner described, the players take turns one after another, each giving exactly one hint, until the guessing player has found the correct solution. (At the latest when only one card is left in the middle of the table!) This can take quite a while, so some players come up several times.

If the solution attempt is finally correct (which can of course also happen on the very first attempt), the guessing player does not need to take any (further) card from the middle. The player who read out the last (decisive) hint may, as a reward, put the two top cards of their personal stack under the draw pile – two penalty points fewer!

Next round: the cards in the middle of the table are topped up to 12 again by taking the required number from the draw pile and laying them out. Now the left-hand neighbour of the previous guessing player becomes the new guessing player. The rest of the sequence stays exactly as described: the guessing player closes their eyes; their right-hand neighbour fixes a term; the guessing player opens their eyes; starting with the left-hand neighbour of the guessing player, each player in turn (one after another) gives exactly one hint, until the guessing player has guessed the sought term.

End of the Game

Several complete rounds are played, so that every player is the guessing player equally often. The player with the fewest cards in their personal stack at the end, i.e. the fewest penalty points, is the winner.

Three More Hints

If the draw pile runs out before the game is over, each player simultaneously places 1 card under the draw pile. This is repeated until there are enough cards in the draw pile again. If a player has to hand over their last card in this way, the game ends immediately and that player has won.

If a player gives the last hint that leads to the solution, they may put two cards from their personal stack under the draw pile. If a player may give their last card in this way more than once (in different rounds), they win the game automatically and immediately, and are thereby a true master of impossible hints.

When a player reads out a word and thus gives a hint, only comments such as "that fits quite well" or "that doesn't fit at all" are allowed. Further explanations are not permitted. For example, a player who reads the word "schweben" (to float) may not add "I mean it in the sense of flying" or "I mean the feeling of floating", etc.

Example of a Round

Vanessa is the guessing player. She closes her eyes, and her right-hand neighbour, Peter, points to the term "Käse" (cheese). Vanessa opens her eyes. Her left-hand neighbour, Mic, must now give the first hint. He takes the top card of his personal stack, reads aloud the word "qualvoll" (agonizing), and slides the card back under his stack. Vanessa taps the word "Leiche" (corpse). That is unfortunately wrong! Vanessa takes the card with the term "Leiche" and slides it under her personal stack.

The next hint must be given by Mic's left-hand neighbour, Anke. Anke reads "rutschig" (slippery) aloud and slides the card back under her personal stack. Vanessa taps "Geburt" (birth). Unfortunately wrong again! Vanessa takes the card with the term "Geburt" and slides it under her personal stack.

The next hint comes from Peter, who reads the word "fettig" (greasy) aloud and slides the card back under his stack. This time Vanessa taps "Käse". That is correct! Vanessa does not need to take a card. As a reward for his hint, Peter may give two of his cards and put them under the draw pile.
