Set Contents

  • 6 pieces for players 7 and 8 (3 white and 3 purple)
  • 4 Verflixxt cards
  • 4 round tokens (values +1, +2, +3 and +4)
  • 10 worm tokens
  • 1 Flixxy bird figure with stand
  • 1 action die

Setup

Before playing, carefully remove all the components from their frames.

To play, combine the components of the base game and this expansion, except for the 4 route cards with values "-1" and "-2" from the base game (they stay in the box). All other route cards are turned face down, shuffled, and placed on the board in random order, starting from the start (blue) card and ending with the finish (orange) card.

Place the four new orange Verflixxt cards at positions 10, 15, 20 and 25 of the resulting route.

Stack the 4 green round tokens next to the finish card in decreasing order, with "+4" on top.

Place the eight guards on the first eight positive route cards (that is, route cards with plus values, or luck cards).

Each player takes three pieces in the colour they chose (with 2-4 players) or two pieces (with 5-8 players) and places them on the blue start card. The Flixxy bird on its stand is also placed on the start card.

The octagonal worm tokens are used only in the worm token variant (see below). In the regular game they stay in the box.

The youngest player begins the game. He receives two dice: the action die and the regular die.

Gameplay

The game is played according to the basic rules of That's Life! with the following additions.

Flixxy the Bird

Flixxy is a neutral game element. Players move it the same way they move pieces. If Flixxy moves off a route card on which there are no other pieces or guards besides it, the player who moved Flixxy must take that route card. If there are other pieces on the route card, the card stays in place. If a player moves his own piece off a card where Flixxy is standing, the route card stays in place. A guard can also be moved if Flixxy is standing next to it.

Any player may move Flixxy. Each turn, players roll the action die together with the regular die.

Action die values:

[Gap in source: the action die face table is an image that is not present in the Russian text, so the face values are not transcribed here.]

The player must move Flixxy the number of moves shown on the regular die. In this case the player may not move his own pieces or guards.

The player may decide whether to move Flixxy, his own piece, or a guard. Remember that a guard can be moved only if one of any player's pieces or Flixxy is standing next to it.

A player may not move Flixxy; instead, he must move either his own piece or a guard.

Round Tokens

Unlike pieces, Flixxy may travel around the route several times. The start and finish cards count as ordinary route cards when Flixxy passes through them. A player who places Flixxy on the finish card, or moves Flixxy past it onto a new lap, takes the top round token. The number on the token counts toward the final score.

By the end of the fifth lap, no round tokens will remain on the table. In that case Flixxy and the action die are no longer part of the game and are returned to the box, and the game continues with one regular die.

Verflixxt Cards

Unlike the base game, each player must stack the route cards and luck cards he collects from the route in front of himself, face up. When he receives another card, he places it on top of the stack. The order of the cards in the stack may not be changed.

If a player moves his own piece or Flixxy off an orange Verflixxt card, and there are no other pieces or guards on that card, he must pass the top card of his stack of collected cards to the player on his left. That player places it on top of his own stack. If the player has not yet collected any route card, he gives nothing.

A card may not be passed to a player whose pieces have all reached the finish. It goes to the next player on the left whose pieces are still in the game. If no such players remain, the card is simply removed from the game.

Attention: Verflixxt cards remain on the board as part of the route until the end of the game. Players never take them.

End of the Game

The game ends when all players have brought all their pieces to the finish. It does not matter where Flixxy is. Each player counts his points as usual, then adds the value of the round tokens he has collected (if any). The player with the most points wins.

Worm Token Variant

You will have noticed that the worm tokens are not used in the rules above. Playing with these tokens adds even more unpredictability and danger. Shuffle the tokens and place them in a stack, worm side up.

Each time a player receives a negative route card, he also takes the top token from this stack. He may look at the token carefully and place it face down in front of himself.

A player may use the worm tokens he has received during his turn. To do so, turn the token over and perform the special action shown on its face (see the descriptions below). A player may play several such tokens in one turn. Played tokens are placed back at the bottom of the worm token stack (again face down).

Note:

  • A worm token may not be used on the same turn in which it was received.
  • If a player receives a negative card from another player (as the result of a Verflixxt card), he does not receive a worm token.

Worm Token Descriptions

[Gap in source: the faces of the worm tokens are icons that are not present in the Russian text. The four actions below are identified only by their printed names. The text does not state how many tokens of each action there are.]

Extra turn. At the end of a normal turn, the player makes a repeat roll of the dice and moves once more.

Moving a card to the bottom of the stack. The player may move the top card of his stack to the bottom of that stack. He may do this either before or after moving his pieces.

Moving other pieces. The player chooses a route card on which at least one of his pieces is standing. Instead of moving his own piece, he plays this token to move all the other pieces on that card (including opponents' pieces, guards and Flixxy) the number of moves rolled on the die. If the player decides to use this token, the value of the action die is not taken into account.

Swapping places. The player may swap one of his pieces with any piece, guard or Flixxy located on a neighbouring route card. Only pieces are swapped; the route cards stay where they are. He may perform this action before or after his turn, but he may not use the same piece both for the swap and for a move.

If at the end of the game players still have unused worm tokens, each unused token gives its owner 1 additional victory point. As in the other variants, the player with the most points wins.

Standard Route Layout Variant

If you prefer the starting route layout of the base game (without the expansion), you may use it as the basis. In that case, the route cards are laid out as the That's Life! rules prescribe, and the Verflixxt cards are placed between cards 8 and 9 (before the luck cards), between cards 14 and 15 (after the luck cards), between cards 19 and 20 (after "+4"), and between cards 26 and 27 (after "-4").
