Shade Rules
The following passages are reproduced from the Valeria: Card Kingdoms – Darksworn rulebook (valeria-card-kingdoms-darksworn-rulebook.md). Only the passages that define the Shade and the Shade Monster card anatomy are included, along with the Monster Phase steps that check Shade Monsters. The rest of the Darksworn rulebook is not reproduced here.
Monster Icon
Shade: The Shade is a new Monster Type. Shades do not belong to any Monster Area from the base game or expansion. There are 9 Shade Monster cards in this expansion that are shuffled into the Monster deck after setting up the Monster row. You may discover other Shade Monsters throughout the Books in the Darksworn Saga.
Shade Monster Cards
The new Shade Monster cards have an Activation Condition in the upper-left corner followed by Instructions. The Shade Monster cards in this expansion do not have a Monster Area. All other card anatomy is the same as a standard Monster card.
Activation Condition: The Shade Monster card is activated according to the condition set to the left of the colon. There are 3 possible conditions for activations:
- Instant [lightning icon]: The Instructions are carried out when the Shade Monster card is drawn from the Monster deck and placed in the Monster row.
- Wild Die [wild die icon]: The Instructions are carried out during the Monster Phase if the Number tile above the Shade Monster card was activated.
- Die with Value [value icon]: The Instructions are carried out during the Monster Phase if the value on the icon is shown on the dice or the sum of both dice. In the case of doubles, the Instructions are carried out twice.
Instructions: The Active Player carries out the Instructions and should consult other players on the best course of action.
Monster Phase (Shade steps)
Darksworn Monster Phase, steps 2 and 3, as they apply to Shade Monsters:
- Starting with 1 and continuing up in ascending order up to 5, if a Shade Monster has an Activation Condition met, carry out the Instructions. If a Shade Monster has the Wild Die icon, then it activates if the Number tile above it was activated. Some Shade Monsters will just attack the column as normal, but others will be able to Discard or Banish Citizen cards, ignoring the Wall tiles.
- Finally, if you have activated a 6, first check the Shade Monster cards in the Monster row, then follow the instructions in the Book.
Shade Monster Events
Each card below is a Shade Monster card. Its Activation Condition is the lightning icon, so its Instructions are carried out when the card is drawn from the Monster deck and placed in the Monster row (see Shade Monster Cards above). The Instructions are the printed text on the card, under the card name.

Gaps and Notes
- Card-only source. The pack contains no rules insert. Each card's Instructions line is transcribed from photographs of the card faces. The terms on the cards (Strength, Magic, Gold, Monster, tableau, stack, flip) are base-game terms defined in the Valeria: Card Kingdoms rulebook.
- Resource colours. The Strength, Magic and Gold names come from the colour of the printed resource icon, matching the Valeria: Card Kingdoms rulebook's Resource icons (Gold, Strength, Magic) and the Monster stat layout on these cards. The colour-to-name reading is an inference from the photographs and the base rulebook, not a printed key on these cards.
- Icons kept as printed. The following symbols are not spelled out in the sources read, so they are kept as the icon as printed rather than given a name: the red X symbol (in Latchling, Amanita), the blue C letter in a box, the green D letter in a box, and the dark M letter in a box. The meaning of the X symbol is not confirmed. "X" is written here as it appears on the card.
- Player icon. The person icon in Latchling, Devourer and Ragool is a plain blue person with no question mark. It is written here as "a player", as in the pack's own description.
- Omitted card text. The top-right Monster Type icon, the small stat numbers, the "Exhausted" label on the card back edge, and the bottom cost or reward line (for example the "C ≤ 3" line on Ragool and the "2 + D" line on Devourer) are not part of the Instructions and are not transcribed. The bottom line is not reproduced because its meaning is not confirmed from the photographs.
- Expansion source. The base game this pack expands is Valeria: Card Kingdoms. The Shade rules in the Shade Rules section come from the Darksworn rulebook, which is catalogued separately.
