How do production multipliers (x2, x3) work, and what do they multiply?

A multiplier makes the structure on that site produce its usual amount extra times, but only the usual production of that structure. The bonus for a pair of upgraded buildings and other site bonuses are not multiplied, and a x2 does not double a double-upgrade output. Multipliers apply only during Production, not when a card such as Night Shift copies production.
