Must the New Discoveries solo game use Quick Start and skip round 1?

No, it is optional. The official solo rules use Quick Start, which puts the era marker on the second space so you skip round 1 and play rounds 2 to 10. The designer said you can use home rules instead: keep the new assistants, drop the round-skipping elements and play the full number of rounds.
