In what order are cards removed when a unit takes a casualty?

For an ordinary attack: hand first, then discard pile, then deck (reshuffle after searching the deck), and only if none is found is the combat counter removed. For friendly fire during your own turn (your own Mortar), the Reinforcements rules add the play area first. The designers' 2020 ruling put the play area after the hand; the 2022 clarification put it first and replaced that.
