Setup
Each artist takes a screen, a wipe-clean scoring tile in their colour, a score marker in their colour, a black UV pen with UV lamp, a white foil pen, a sheet from the drawing pad and 4 dice (1 per colour).
Lay the game board on the table. Sort the coloured cards with the sentence fragments by category, shuffle the stacks and place them next to the board as face-down draw piles. Turn up 6 cards per category and place them on the matching spaces of the game board.
Place your score markers on space 0 of the scoring track. Place the sand timer next to the game board and decide together whether you want to play a short game (5 rounds) or a long game (42 points).
Gameplay
Get drinks, take a last bathroom break and put your smartphones away. Now you are ready to start.
Everyone rolls their 4 dice at the same time, hidden behind their screen. Dice colour and number refer to the corresponding card on the game board. Everyone draws their sentence at the same time on their pad sheet with the UV pen. The UV lamp must not be used while drawing. Letters and numbers are not allowed.
Whoever finishes their drawing first turns over the sand timer. Once it has run out, all the others must stop drawing. In clockwise order, each artist lights up their work with the UV lamp. All the others try to guess which sentence the displayed work shows.
For each work, write the corresponding number combination with the foil pen on your wipe-clean tile and reveal the result at the same time.
If someone takes too long to interpret, you can turn over the sand timer to speed up the decision.
Scoring
Points are awarded as follows:
- 1 point for each artwork by someone else that you interpreted completely correctly (all 4 numbers match)
- 1 point for each person who interpreted your artwork completely correctly (all 4 numbers match)
- 1 bonus point per correct interpretation if you managed to depict your sentence in one coherent picture
- -1 point if you turned over the sand timer but nobody interpreted your artwork correctly
Move the score markers accordingly.
Next Round
After a round, the cards are discarded from the game board and replaced with new cards from the draw piles. Turn the pad sheet over or take a new one. Wipe off the last number combination with the eraser on the lid of the white foil pen.
The game ends after 5 rounds or as soon as someone reaches 42 points.
Tips and Tricks
The following tips and tricks make ULTRAVIOLETT play even better.
- Start with a practice round. Then everyone understands the procedure better, and the first laughs lift the mood.
- It is easier to draw 4 separate pictures than to depict the whole sentence as one coherent picture.
- Letters and numbers are not allowed. But crossing out or arrows are not forbidden. Use these aids deliberately so that your fellow players can guess your sentence more easily, or so that the difference between two similar terms is highlighted more clearly.
- Also pay attention to the other sentence fragments of a category. That lets you better address what makes your sentence fragment distinctive and concentrate on exactly those characteristics while drawing.
- The sheet from the drawing pad can be reused on the back for the next round. When the pad is used up, an ordinary notepad or a white sheet of paper will do.
- If all the invisible ink is used up, you can order an official replacement pen from the publisher.
- If the batteries in a UV lamp run out after endless game nights, you can also simply use the UV lamp on a fellow player's pen to present your masterpiece.
- If the scoring rules are too demanding, or if children are playing, points can for example also be awarded for 3 or more correctly interpreted numbers.
Expansions for the Party Game
With the expansion for two additional players, and with 3 to 6 players, nothing changes in the course of play. Of course, with more players more points can be scored per round, so with 5 or 6 players a long game is recommended. Otherwise all rules stay the same.
The extra cards of the Hardcore expansion can be used separately for pure enjoyment by turning up the 25 cards per category on the game board. Alternatively, the cards of the base game and the Hardcore cards can be shuffled together. But beware: the extra cards are not marked and would have to be sorted out again, depending on their content, for the next family game night.
