Setup
- Shuffle the 31 path cards face down and lay them out in a large circle in the centre of the table. Leave a larger gap between two cards in one place in your circle.
- Now turn all the path cards face up so that everyone can see how many chewing points each one shows.
- Place the 3 prey cards in the centre of the circle.
- Place Mamontoed and Kostolom in the gap you left between the path cards.
- Mamontoed (the small figure) always moves clockwise along the path cards, while Kostolom (the large figure) moves counter-clockwise.
- Prepare the dice.
How to Play
Play proceeds clockwise. The hairiest player starts. Roll all 5 dice at once and look at the result.
What symbols appear on the dice?
Bone: If a die shows a bone, you must immediately set that die aside in the centre of the table.
Dinosaur, mammoth, prehistoric bird, Mamontoed, Kostolom:
- After each roll, choose at least one of the five symbols showing on the dice, but you may choose more than one. Place all the dice with your chosen symbols in the centre of the table.
- Roll the remaining dice again. Choose again at least one symbol and place those dice next to the dice you already set aside in the centre. This may be the same symbol you chose before.
- Keep rolling until all the dice have been set aside in the centre and you have nothing left to roll.
Look at the dice
After you have set aside all the dice, look at them:
- Bone: a die showing a bone is worth nothing.
- Mammoth, prehistoric dinosaur and bird: If during your turn you have collected at least 3 dice showing the same prey symbol, take the corresponding prey card and place it in front of you. If that prey card is already held by another player, take it from them. Warning: you earn extra chewing points for each prey card you hold, but only at the end of the game.
- Kostolom and Mamontoed:
- For each die showing Kostolom or Mamontoed, you must move the corresponding figure forward to the next card. Distances between the cards do not count.
- If you move only one figure, at the end of your turn take the card on which that figure stopped, place the figure on the corresponding empty spot, and place the card in front of you face down.
- If you move both figures, you must take both cards on which your prehistoric heroes stopped. You may keep only one of them, placed face down in front of you, and give the other to any player of your choice.
- Important: in this case you must decide which figure moves first.
- If none of the dice show a Stone Age hunter, you may not move the hunter figures.
Then the turn passes to the next player.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as Kostolom and Mamontoed have met again, or have even passed each other. The wooden figures are moved to their destinations so that each player can take the corresponding cards.
Who Wins?
At the end, each player counts the chewing points on the cards they have earned. Each card with a stinking caterpillar gives 1 point. Count the points on the other cards as well. You may also earn an extra 3 points for each prey card you have in front of you at the end of the game. The player with the most chewing points wins the game.
Variant for Unsure Hunters
Players play according to the base rules with the following differences.
Shuffle the 31 path cards and lay them face down in a large circle in the centre of the table. Leave a gap between any two cards in the circle. Turn over every 4th path card so that you can see how many points it shows.
Now you can see which cards are more worthwhile.
Translator's note: the source prints "каждую 4 карточку" ("every 4 card") without the ordinal ending; "every 4th path card" is the reading taken here.
