Spielmaterial (Components)
- 32 game cards with 64 puzzles
- 4 x 7 animal pieces (Legeteile mit Tieren)
Spielvorbereitung (Setup)
Determine your player colours first: place the 4 pieces with the meerkats into the lid of the box and shake it. Without looking, each player in turn draws one piece. Your player colour is now yellow, pink, green or blue.
- Take the 7 pieces of your colour and place them in front of you on the table. They differ by the animals shown on them and by their shape.
- Take all the cards of your player colour and decide together whether you play with the easy side (green) or the difficult side (yellow). For your first game we recommend the easy side.
- Place your 8 cards in a stack, with the side you want to play with face down. Draw the top 3 cards and return them to the box. The remaining 5 cards form your draw pile.
Each card shows an individual, light-coloured placement area that must be filled exactly with pieces. The pieces needed for it (the animals) are shown on each card.
Spielablauf (Gameplay)
You play over 5 rounds. In the first round the oldest player is the start player. After that the start player passes clockwise. Each round proceeds as follows:
1. Place the pieces on the card
- Everyone simultaneously draws the top card of their draw pile and places it in front of them, with the side to be played facing up.
- Take the pieces with the animals shown on your card and place them beside it.
- Now the start player calls "Los!" ("Go!") and everyone grabs their animals to fill the light placement area of their own card as quickly as possible.
- As soon as one of you has placed the animals on their placement area exactly, they call Ubongo! No animal may project beyond the placement area, and no square may remain empty. The others keep playing, but only until the second-to-last player has also correctly filled their card and called Ubongo! Then the round ends immediately.
2. Evaluate the card
- With 2 players: The first player to call Ubongo! may keep their card and places it on their winnings pile. The second player gets nothing and must put their card into the box.
- With 3 players: The first player may keep their card and also receives the card of the third player. They place both cards on their winnings pile. The second player may also place their card on their winnings pile. The third player gets nothing, because they must give their card to the first player.
- With 4 players: The first player may keep their card and also receives the card of the fourth player. They place both cards on their winnings pile. The second and third players may place their cards on their winnings pile. The fourth player gets nothing, because they must give their card to the first player.
3. Start a new round
Draw a new card from your draw pile and take the animal pieces that belong to it. The new start player calls "Los!" and you continue as described above.
Ende des Spiels (End of the Game)
The game ends after 5 rounds. The player who has collected the most cards on their winnings pile wins. If several players have the same number of cards, they win together.
Weitere Regeln (Further Rules)
If nobody managed to place the animals correctly on their card, the cards are put into the box. For the next round, each player takes a new card from their draw pile.
Solospiel auf Zeit (Solo Game Against the Clock)
Take the cards and pieces of one player colour and, in addition, a kitchen or stopwatch timer. Set the timer to exactly 8, 5 or 3 minutes. Try to solve as many puzzles as possible within this time. If you manage to place the pieces correctly on the placement area, put the card on your winnings pile and immediately draw the next card from the draw pile. You may only start the next puzzle once you have solved the previous one. If you cannot solve a puzzle, you may also put the card into the box; that card is then out of the game. When 8, 5 or 3 minutes have passed, the timer rings and time is up. Now count your cards: the more cards you have collected, the better!
Solospiel ohne Zeit (Solo Game Without Time Pressure)
For your first solo games we recommend playing without time pressure. Take all 8 cards of one player colour with the matching pieces. If you have placed the animals on the placement area correctly, you may place the card on your winnings pile. Cards with unsolved puzzles go into the box. Note how many cards you won. Next time, take the cards and pieces of a different player colour and compare your results.
