Before the First Game…

…carefully remove the 32 tiles from the cardboard.

Setup

Each card has two sides with different difficulty levels:

  • On the side with the easier tasks, three tiles are pictured next to the light-colored placement area.

  • On the pro side, four tiles are pictured next to the light-colored placement area.

  • At the start of the game, sort the tiles by color and spread them out in the middle of the table, making sure that no tile is covered by another.

  • The players now decide together which difficulty level they want to play. The cards are then sorted by color into four stacks: all cards showing yellow tiles go on one stack, all cards showing blue tiles go on the next stack, and so on. For every card, the side with the chosen difficulty level faces down, so the cards lie face-down.

  • The four card stacks are arranged around the tiles.

  • In a two-player game, 3 cards are removed from each stack.

How to Play

The youngest player is the starting player. Play proceeds clockwise around the table and runs over several rounds.

Each round proceeds as follows:

In Turn: Take 1 Card

The starting player takes the top card from a stack of their choice, without looking at its underside, and places it face-down in front of themselves. The player to the left of the starting player takes the top card from a different stack and places it face-down in front of themselves. Play continues around the table in this way until every player has taken a card from a different stack.

Watch out: no player may take a card from a stack that another player has already taken a card from this round.

Once every player has a card in front of them, the starting player calls "Ubongo!" All players immediately turn their card face-up.

All Players Simultaneously: Cover the Card with Tiles

Each player now takes, as quickly as possible, the tiles pictured on their card from the middle of the table (paying attention to the correct shape and color!).

Each player tries, as quickly as possible, to place their tiles on the light-colored placement area of their card so that all hexagonal cells are covered exactly.

Important: both sides of the tiles may be used to cover the cards. To solve a puzzle, it may therefore be necessary to flip tiles over!

Task Solved

The player who is first to place their tiles correctly calls "Ubongo!" They may set their task card aside in front of themselves as a victory point and count aloud (not too fast!) to 20 if the easier tasks were chosen, or to 30 if the pro tasks were chosen. (The players may also agree on any other number before the game.) The other players keep playing in the meantime. Anyone who places their tiles correctly before the first player finishes counting to 20 (or 30) may also set their card aside in front of themselves as a victory point.

Anyone who has not managed to place their tiles correctly by this point gives their card to the first player. This player may set it aside in front of themselves as a victory point as well. All tiles used in this round are returned to the tiles of matching color in the middle of the table. This ends the round, and the next one begins. The player to the left of the player who solved their task first becomes the new starting player and takes the top card from any stack…

End of the Game

The game ends when, at the end of a round, at least one card stack has been used up. Whoever has the most cards as victory points at this time wins.

Variant for Pros

Play as described above — except only the first player may keep their card as a victory point. The other cards are set aside and are out of the game.

Variant for 1 Player

The player chooses a difficulty level and tries to solve as many tasks as possible in 20 minutes. If a task seems too difficult, they can set it aside and draw a new task card.
