Before the First Game

Before the first game, carefully punch all parts out of the box and remove the punch remnants from the holes of the game board.

Attention: Of the 48 gems in this expansion, only 36 are needed. Two gems of each colour are set aside, stored separately, and serve only as replacement material should a gem ever be lost.

Components

  • 1 game board
  • 2 player figures
  • 48 gems
  • 18 puzzle cards (Legetafeln)
  • 2 x 12 puzzle pieces (Legeteile)

Setup for 5 and 6 Players

  • Apart from the game board, all of the material from the base game Ubongo is needed. The game board of the base game is replaced by the game board of this expansion. (You still need the base game's game board if you play with fewer than 5 players!)
  • The 72 gems from the base game plus the 36 gems from the expansion are placed at random into the holes of the game board, one gem per hole. There are 18 gems of each gem colour.
  • Each player takes one of the 6 player figures and places it on any of the six long red fields of the game board. Several figures may stand on the same field. The player figure not used with 5 players is returned to the box.
  • Each player receives the same set of 12 coloured puzzle pieces, all of which differ in shape and colour. Each player lays their puzzle pieces out in front of them.
  • The 18 new puzzle cards are shuffled together with the 36 puzzle cards from the base game.
  • The players decide whether to play with the easier side of the puzzle cards (three puzzle pieces each) or the harder side (four puzzle pieces each).
  • 5 players: 9 puzzle cards are returned to the box.
  • 6 players: all 54 puzzle cards are played with.
  • The puzzle cards needed for the game are shuffled and placed as a stack beside the game board, with the side facing up that is not played.
  • The hourglass and the die from the base game are set out.

If you want to sort the expansion's puzzle cards out again later, you can recognise them by the "E" in front of the card number, which is in the lower right corner of each card.

Rule Changes for 5 and 6 Players

The rules of the base game remain the same except for the following changes.

5 Players

  • The player who first exactly fills their puzzle area calls "Ubongo! Four". They may now move their player figure up to four spaces in either direction along the 6 red fields of the game board (or stay where it is, if they wish). In the row where the player figure then lands (or stays), the player may take the two nearest gems.
  • The player who is second to complete their puzzle area within the hourglass time (Sanduhrzeit) calls "Ubongo! Three". They may move their player figure up to three spaces and take the next two gems in their row.
  • Each further player who can also complete their puzzle area within the hourglass time may move one space less far each time (two, one, zero). They too call "Ubongo!" and state the number of spaces they may move. Then they may take the next two gems in their row.

6 Players

  • The player who first exactly fills their puzzle area calls "Ubongo! Five". They may now move their player figure up to five spaces in either direction along the 6 red fields of the game board (or stay where it is, if they wish). In the row where the player figure then lands (or stays), the player may take the two nearest gems.
  • The player who is second to complete their puzzle area within the hourglass time calls "Ubongo! Four". They may move their player figure up to four spaces and take the next two gems in their row.
  • Each further player who can also complete their puzzle area within the hourglass time may move one space less far each time (three, two, one, zero). They too call "Ubongo!" and state the number of spaces they may move. Then they may take the next two gems in their row.

Game End

The game ends as in the base game when all puzzle cards have been played, that is, after 9 rounds. The final scoring also remains unchanged from the base game.
