Tips on the Dark Crusade
Understand the Oni as an extension of your strategy. They can't conquer areas for you, but they can take areas from enemies, which costs your enemies victory points. Even if your units look robust, losing one or even two units can quickly cost you a turn.
Lillith is great for acting behind enemy lines.
Grendel is a threatening wall that you can use to deter your opponents from attacking you. But someone will surely spend an combat action to take this units off the field, if they can.
Samael's strength is his versatility, as he has high damage and high conquest values. His passive ability helps you spread the Oni later on.
Samael
His ability is also triggered in areas where he is placed, e.g. his starting area. Since he places markers in the areas, these markers can be affected by properties and skills that affect markers, such as Cleansing of the Lords of the Lost Sea.
Lillith
Even if the movement range of an action/event/counterattack, etc. is 1, Lillith may always move up to 2 areas.
Oni-Control
As long as the Dark Crusade are in play, the other players lose control of the Oni. This means that whenever they have an Oni action on their action card, the Dark Crusade player executes that action instead.
In doing so, the Dark Crusade player may only place as many Oni or attack as often as stated on the player's card.
If the Oni are attacked, the Dark Crusade player always chooses the counterattack for the Oni - even if they attack the Oni themselves.
The Dark Crusade player has no control over the Oni other than Oni actions and counterattacks for the Oni. They may not produce them with production points, move them with their own movement actions or ignore them during conquests/attacks.
Nemesis
This special rule only applies if the Kampfgruppe 03 is in play and only for the Kampfgruppe 03. No other player benefits from it.
Explanations to the Cards
The Nuclear Heart
After using this combat card you turn the area to the devastated side. The area is now worth 0 victory points.
The 150 damage points of this combat card are absolute, the 100 damage points of Grendel are not added. As always, the attacker may spread the damage among different defenders at will.
Note that Grendel is not immune to radioactivity and therefore will be destroyed at the end of the round.
Counterattack: Adaptation
Draw an action card and then discard any one.
The player may immediately draw a face down card from the stack of the unused Action cards and take it into their hand. Then, he places one of his cards under the same Stack. This allows the player to remove unwanted cards from the game. Important: this action card is not used immediately, but can and will only be used in the next round. If there is no stack with unused action cards, the counter cannot be used.
Back from Hell
The Dark Crusade must have a unit in reserve. If they already have all the units in play, this card cannot be used.
The use of this combat card costs as usual 1 combat action.
Note that this is followed by either conquest or annihilation. For conquest, the standard rules apply: The Dark Crusade needs at least as many Conquest Points as the enemy to conquer the area. When destroyed, the damage points of the placed unit count (also).
The combat card Back from Hell may also be played if the area cannot be conquered (to just bring a unit into play). If opponents are present, counter-attacks are always chosen, regardless of whether the attack was successful or not.
Note that this attack cannot be combined with The Nuclear Heart, as they are two separate combat cards. However, The Nuklear Heart can subsequently be executed as a separate attack.
Other Remarks
2-Player-Mode:
The Dark Crusade are currently (as of December 2019) not compatible with the 2-player mode. This expansion therefore does not contain 2-player cards.
Mascot: Fenris
Fenris is the Dark Crusade mascot. This mascot is only used if you use the "Mascot Module" of the After the Moonfall expansion.
Goal of the Dark Crusade:
The areas can be conquered over several rounds and phases. But as soon as you have 8 at the end of a round, the victory points are safe for you. You can count every area you own and have a Tsukuyumi property, e.g. moon, areas where Samael was standing, etc.
