What's in the Box
- 1 game board
- 16 truffle tiles (4 sets of 4 truffles, each with 1–4 gold dots)
- 4 truffle pigs (each marked with a different symbol: heart, star, flower, drop)
- 4 symbol tiles
- 5 leaf piles
- 6 acorn tiles
- 1 salamander turn marker
Before You Begin
- Unfold the game board and place it in the center of the table.
- Shuffle the 16 truffle tiles face down. Place four tiles on the roots of each of the four oak trees along the edges of the board. Then turn all the truffle tiles face up so the gold dots are visible.
- Choose any one acorn tile and set it aside for now. Place the remaining five acorn tiles in the center of the game board.
- Cover each of the five acorn tiles with a leaf pile, then mix them well. Be careful not to lift the leaf piles while mixing − slide them around with the tiles underneath.
- Place each leaf pile on a different oak leaf space in the center of the game board, leaving the middle oak leaf space empty. Place the acorn tile you set aside earlier on that center space.
- Each player chooses a truffle pig and takes the matching symbol tile. Place the symbol tile in front of you and put your pig on one of the four orange oak leaf path spaces. Important: Only one truffle pig may stand on a space at a time.
- Any unused pigs can be returned to the box, they won't be needed.
Game setup for 4 children.
Let's Get Started!
You'll take turns going clockwise. The player who can oink the loudest goes first. That player takes the salamander and places it in front of them. It marks the starting player and stays with them until the end of the game.
Each turn goes like this:
-
Move a leaf pile. Pick up any leaf pile and use it to cover the acorn tile that was previously visible.
-
Move your truffle pig. Count the number of acorns on the now-visible acorn tile. Move your truffle pig that number of empty spaces clockwise along the path. Important: Occupied spaces do not count − skip over them!
Where did your truffle pig land?
- On a space without a leaf: Nothing happens. Your turn is over.
- On a space with a green clover: You get to take another turn right away!
- On a space with an orange oak leaf: You can choose:
- Take a truffle tile from the roots of the adjacent oak tree and place it face up in front of you. Note: You may only take a truffle tile if you don't already have one showing the same mushroom with the same number of gold dots. If there are no new truffle tiles you can take from that tree, you may not take one. or
- Take another turn immediately.
After that, it's the next child's turn.
When Does the Game End?
As soon as a player has four different truffle tiles in front of them (one each with one, two, three, and four gold dots), the round continues until it reaches the child with the salamander. Whoever has four different truffle tiles at that point wins the game. If more than one player has completed their set, you share the victory!
Variant for Expert Truffle Pigs
Play by the basic rules with the following changes:
- At the beginning of the game, evenly distribute all truffle tiles face down on the roots of the four oak trees.
- When you collect a truffle tile, place it face down in front of you. You can peek at your own tiles at any time, but keep them secret from others.
- Everyone collects as many truffle tiles as possible − duplicates are allowed.
- The game ends when the last truffle tile has been taken from the board.
- Now reveal your tiles and add up your gold points. The player with the most points wins.
- If there's a tie, those players share the victory.
Variant for Especially Clever Truffle Pigs
Play by the basic rules with the following twist:
- Each time you collect a truffle tile, you may swap any two leaf piles on the board. Move them along with the acorn tiles underneath − without peeking!
Tip: You can even combine this variant with the advanced version for double the challenge!
