Objective of the Game

The objective of the game is to grow a trollius flower. Players roll dice that provide symbols, representing the necessary elements:

  • Seeds: heart
  • Water: blue triangle
  • Light: yellow circle
  • Soil: black cross
  • Nutrients: green square

The symbols are drawn on the player's coupon to earn as many points as possible. The player with the most points wins.

Game Setup

If you are playing for the first time or playing with children, we recommend starting with the basic game.

Once you've played a few times, you can try the more challenging versions (see page 8) or just include some of the additional objectives.

Basic Game

  1. Give each player their own player coupon and a set of pencils. Play with the swamp side face up.

  2. Each player chooses one player die (red, blue, white, purple, orange or green).

  3. Cross out all objective boxes and the Trollius row (soil, seeds, light) on your player coupon. You need these when you want to play challenging versions of this game.

These are the objective boxes: three yellow circles, numbered 1, 2 and 3.

  4. Shuffle 11 easy (green) secret objective cards and deal one to each player. When playing with children you may keep the cards face up. Yellow and red cards are not needed in this version. It you want to make playing easier, you can leave the secret objective cards out.

  5. Place four symbol dice in the center of the table.

When players are more familiar with the game, you may add more elements to the game. Play the advanced versions of the game or choose which elements you want to play with.

You'll find more tips for advanced games at page 8.

Gameplay

Beginning of each round

  1. Each player rolls their player die at the same time.

Remember: you throw only your own player die and symbol dice, never any other player's player die.

  2. The highest number rolled on the player dice determines how many symbol dice will be rolled this round.

Example: The players roll the following numbers: purple 1, white 2, and orange 3. This means that three symbol dice will be rolled this round.

The round

  1. The player with the purple die chooses which symbol dice to roll. Note that the dice contain different numbers of various symbols, so choose the dice that best suit your strategy.

  2. The player with the purple die rolls the chosen symbol dice.

  3. Each player selects as many symbols from the rolled dice as shown on their player die and draws those symbols on their player coupon.

Example: The player with the purple die rolls three symbol dice. The purple die player draws one symbol, the white die player draws two symbols, and the orange die player draws three symbols. (See example on phase 2.)

    See phase: Drawing symbols

  4. After drawing the symbols, pass your player die to the player on your left.

You don't throw the player die again, the number of symbols to be drawn is the same during the whole round!

  5. If you have completed any general objectives, announce it to the other players.

  6. Repeat steps 4–7 until each player has received their player die back.

A new round begins from step 1. The gameplay is repeated until the game ends.

See phase: End of the game and scoring

Drawing Symbols

Draw symbols in adjacent columns, starting from the lowest available space in the column. Symbols cannot float in the air. If you already have symbols drawn, you may need to draw them at different levels, but they must always be in adjacent columns. Always draw as many symbols as the die indicates.

Well, not always, there is an exception!

Example: If the die shows you need to draw four symbols but your coupon does not have space for four adjacent symbols, you can only draw the ones that fit.

Draw only as many symbols as you can draw in adjacent columns.

Exception: An exception occurs if you don't have enough space to draw all the symbols indicated by the die in adjacent columns.

Example: The die indicates four symbols, but you only have space for two. You can choose whether to draw two or three symbols next to each other. However, you cannot draw two symbols in a space that could fit three symbols.

You must always draw at least one symbol, unless your coupon is full.

Joker

You may use one joker during the game.

Use the joker right before or right after drawing your symbols. Then cross the joker box on your coupon.

A joker allows you to draw one symbol of your choice in any available space, but it must still be placed as low as possible in the column.

An unused joker earns you two bonus points at the end of the game.

Objective Cards

Secret Objective Cards

Basic Game: You receive one secret objective card at the beginning of the game. These can be kept hidden or visible.

Advanced Games: At the beginning of the game, you receive two secret objective cards, one easy and one difficult. Before the game begins, choose which objective to keep and remove the other from the game. Keep the secret objective card hidden until you have completed the objective or the game ends.

You complete a task when you have drawn the symbols in the order shown on the card. The pattern formed by the symbols can be placed anywhere on the coupon. The objective can be completed at any point during the game.

Secret objectives are scored at the end of the game. You can only earn points for a secret objective once, even if you have completed the required pattern multiple times.

General Objective Cards

If you are playing the basic game, ignore the general objective cards!

Don't include this in the basic game.

There are two types of general objective cards:

  • Shape Objectives = blue objective cards
  • Majority Objectives = black objective cards

Shape objectives (1–10) are scored during the game.

You can place the pattern formed by the symbols anywhere on the coupon. You will receive points for completing the objective based on the order in which you completed it. The scoring is indicated on the objective card.

If you successfully complete the objective, announce it to the other players and record the points you earned next to the objective number on your coupon.

Majority objectives are scored based on the largest majority (or the smallest minority) at the end of the game.

The scoring is indicated on the objective card. Players who are tied will receive points according to their ranking, and the points for the next rank will not be awarded.

Example: objective card 11: Miio and Max both have six circles, and Nooa has five circles. Miio and Max each receive six points, and Nooa receives two points.

End of the Game and Scoring

The game ends when a player completely fills their coupon. The round is always played until the end, meaning each player will have their player die returned.

So you might end up just watching while others draw symbols, and you just sit there.

The player with the most points wins. In case of a tie, the player who hasn't used a joker wins. If the game is still tied, the player with the fewest hearts on their coupon wins.

Scoring

  1. Calculate the points for the symbols you have drawn using the table on your coupon.
  2. You get two bonus points for any unused joker.
  3. Add the points from completed secret objectives.
  4. Count the Trollius rows (soil, seeds, light) (or Terra Lux rows for the mountain voucher).

In advanced versions:

  1. Calculate the points from the general objectives.

Scoring example

This example is printed under the heading "Scoring" on page 7. It describes a player's completed coupon:

  1. The player has formed two Trollius rows (3 points per row). Each symbol can only be part of one row, but they can be in any order.
  2. The player did not use the joker, so they earn two bonus points.
  3. This was the basic game, which did not include general or secret objective cards.
  4. The player earns two points for each group of two squares, for a total of six points.
  5. The player earns three points for a group of three triangles and seven points for a group of five triangles. No points are awarded for individual triangles.
  6. The player earns one point for a group of three crosses. No points are awarded for individual crosses or groups of two crosses.
  7. The player earns seven points for a group of nine circles and one point for a group of three circles. No points are awarded for individual circles.
  8. The player earns six points for six hearts. Each heart is worth one point.
  9. Finally, all points are added together. The player earns a total of 39 points.

Tip: Check the next page for strategies on how to maximize your points!

Scoring key

The coupon scoring key shown on page 8 accompanies an example coupon. Its point values are:

The printed key also lists the objective boxes 1, 2 and 3 and the secret objective (lock) box with a cross mark each, and the unused joker as 2 points.

Challenging Versions

Ready for More Challenges? Great! Here are two more challenging game versions for experienced trollius flower growers.

Challenging Game

Set up the basic game with the following changes:

  1. Do not cross out any objective boxes on your player coupon.

  2. Shuffle the yellow and red secret objective cards into one pile and the green cards into another pile. Deal one secret objective card from each pile to each player. After this, the players choose which card they want to keep and which one they will remove from the game.

Secret task cards are kept hidden until the player has completed the task or the game ends.

  3. Remove two cards marked with the (!) symbol from the general task cards. These are the most difficult tasks, which you can include later if you want to add more challenge to the game.

  4. Shuffle the remaining general task cards and place three of them in the center of the table. These tasks are shared by all players. Remove the rest of the general task cards from the game.

Difficult Game

Set up as described above, with the following changes:

  1. Play with the more difficult side of the coupon (mountain side face up).
  2. Include the general objective cards with more difficult objectives. (!)

Note! If you wish, you can deal more task cards to players or leave out the easy tasks if you're looking for a real challenge.

You can always add or remove elements depending on the players' skill level or the number of players.

Scoring General Objectives

Shape Objectives: Completed and scored during the game. The first player to complete the objective gets the highest points indicated on the card. In case of a tie, both players receive the highest score. Other players can still complete the objective later but will earn fewer points. If you do not complete the task, you will not earn any points.

Majority Objectives: Scored at the end of the game based on the largest majority (or the fewest minority). The player with the most required symbols gets the highest score, followed by the others. These are scored at the end of the game.

Shape Objective Examples

  1. Octo symbolorum uniformium: Eight identical symbols.
  2. Spectrum verticale symbolorum: A vertical row where all symbols are different.
  3. Unum symbolum verticale: A vertical row where all symbols are the same.
  4. Tres lineae Trollius: Three Trollius rows.
  5. Quattuor anguli quattuor symbola: A different symbol in each corner.
  6. Verticalis et horizontale: A vertical and horizontal row (symbols can be any type).
  7. Symbolum quadrifolium anguli: The same symbol in each corner.
  8. Horizontale trio duo: Two horizontal rows with no more than three different symbols.
  9. Periculosi gemini crusis: Two cross formations using two different symbols.
  10. Periculosi gemini quadrata: Two square formations using two different symbols.

Majority Objective Examples

  1. Circolorum copia: The most yellow circles at the end of the game.
  2. Crux copia: The most black crosses at the end of the game.
  3. Rarae linea Trollius: The fewest Trollius rows. The player with the fewest Trollius rows at the end of the game receives 7 points, the player with the second fewest Trollius rows gets 4 points, the player with the third fewest Trollius rows receives 1 point, and the rest do not receive any points.
  4. Rarae cor: The fewest hearts at the end of the game. The player with the fewest hearts at the end of the game receives 8 points, the player with the second fewest hearts gets 5 points, the player with the third fewest hearts receives 2 points, the player with the fourth fewest gets 1 point, and the rest do not receive any points.

Remember! You can place the pattern formed by the symbols anywhere on the coupon.
