Components
- 53 tongue-twister cards (cartas de trabalenguas)
- 7 wheat-field cards (cartas de trigal)
Object of the Game
You must generate a fluid chain with the words "Tres-tristes-tigres" ("Three sad tigers"), following one another without stopping. If someone makes a mistake, they are penalized with the cards discarded by the rest. The game is won by whoever is first to run out of cards.
Setup
Shuffle the 60 game cards and deal them all equally among the people playing. Each participant takes their cards and, without looking at them, forms a face-down deck.
In the first round, the person who is able to say the tongue twister fastest without making a mistake or making fewer errors than the rest begins. In the following rounds, whoever made the mistake in the previous round begins. Suppose it is you who begins:
- Turn over the top card of your deck quickly and without hesitation. Turn the card outwards, so that you cannot see it before the rest do.
- Immediately place the card face up in the centre of the table, saying the part of the tongue twister that corresponds, thereby forming the discard pile.
- Next, it is the turn of the next person clockwise, who will do the same, leaving their card on top of the discard pile you started.
In this way your turns will follow one another until someone makes an error in saying the tongue twister, or until someone runs out of cards.
Game Modes
Basic Mode
1. The order of the tongue twister
You must always continue, whenever you can, with the next series of words: Tres-Tristes-Tigres. That is, if you say "tres", the next person will say "tristes", whenever they can. If someone says "tigres", the next must say, if possible, "tres", restarting the series.
However, whether or not you can say the word that is your turn will depend on the elements shown on the card you draw.
The tongue-twister cards show combinations of three different elements: wheat (trigo), tears (lágrimas) and tigers (tigres). The wheat-field cards are explained a little later.
To be able to say each of the words of the series, the following conditions must be met:
- To be able to say "tres", on the card you draw there must appear 3 figures of the same type, whether they are three wheat, three tears or three tigers.
- To be able to say "tristes", on your card there must appear at least 2 tears.
- To be able to say "tigres", on your card there must appear at least 1 tiger.
To summarize, and to make it easier to remember, you need 3 elements of the same type for "tres", 2 tears for "tristes", and 1 tiger for "tigres". It is the 3-2-1 rule.
If you cannot continue the series in the established order, you must skip to the next word that your card allows you to say. For example, if after "tres" you cannot say "tristes", you will have to say "tigres", and if you cannot say "tigres", then you will have to say "tres".
Take a look at the example on the next page to see it more clearly.
Example (illustrated sequence of played cards): "Tres", "Tristes", "Tigres", "Tristes", "Tigres", "Tres", "Tigres", "Tigres".
Remember that these images are only an illustrative example, and that the cards played must be placed in the centre of the table forming a discard pile, without the previous card being visible.
2. The wheat-field cards
If you draw a wheat-field (trigal) card, you must always say "trigal" when placing it in the centre of the table.
When this happens, the next person restarts the series of words from "tres", regardless of which word in the chain was reached before the card appeared. From here on you must perform the series using the vowel indicated on the wheat-field card.
Example with wheat-field cards (illustrated sequence): "Tres", "Tigres", "Trigal" (vowel I), "Tristis", "Tigris", "Tris", "Trigal" (vowel O), "Togros".
With the letter "a" the series will be "tras-trastas-tagras", with the "e" "tres-trestes-tegres", with the letter "i" "tris-tristis-tigris", with the "o" "tros-trostos-togros" and with the "u" "trus-trustus-tugrus".
The effect of the wheat-field card lasts until the end of the round or until a new wheat-field card appears, which will determine a new vowel. When a new wheat-field card appears, the effects of the previous wheat-field cards are invalidated.
End of Round and Game
The round ends when someone makes a mistake, if they say an incorrect word, if they hesitate, if they take too long to say the word... It is advisable that before starting to play you decide what things you will consider errors.
At that moment, the person who committed the fault takes all the cards discarded in that round and adds them to the bottom of their deck. A new round then begins, with the penalized person being the first to draw a card and start the chain of words.
The game ends when someone runs out of cards.
Important:
- If someone makes a mistake but nobody notices the error while it is being made, the game continues.
- If someone stops the game because they believe another person has made a mistake and it is shown that this was not the case, or if an error is pointed out in the turn of the person who made it when it has already passed, the person who stopped the game takes the discard deck and begins a new round.
Additional Game Modes
Albino Mode
When you draw a card with an albino tiger, the chain of words continues as usual, but the direction of turns is reversed. This means that after you, it will again be the turn of the previous person.
In two-player games, whoever draws the card with the albino tiger must repeat their turn.
Wheat Mode (Modo Trigo)
A new word is introduced into the series: "trigo" (wheat): "Tres-tristes-tigres-trigo".
To be able to say "trigo", on the card there must appear at least 1 wheat. When the wheat-field card appears and, depending on the vowel it indicates, it will be said "traga", "tregue", "trigui", "trogo" or "trugu".
Example of Wheat Mode (illustrated sequence): "Tres", "Tigres", "Trigal" (vowel E), "Trestes", "Tregue", "Tres", "Tegres", "Tregue", "Trigal" (vowel A), "Tras", "Traga".
Trauma Mode
If the background colour/frame of the card you place on the table matches that of the previous card, instead of continuing the series you must repeat what the person preceding you said when they played their card. The next person will continue the series from where you left it, unless the background/frame of their card is also repeated. Beware of the background!
Example (illustrated sequence): "Tres", "Tres", "Tristes", "Tigres", "Tigres", "Tres", "Trigal" (vowel A), "Tras".
Mixed Modes
Combine two of the additional modes as you like to increase the difficulty of the game even further:
- Retrótrigo Mode: combine Albino Mode and Wheat Mode
- Traumátrigo Mode: combine Wheat Mode and Trauma Mode
- Retrotrauma Mode: combine Trauma Mode and Albino Mode
