Under the Collector's Edition rules both unkept drawn cards and played cards go to the bottom of their own deck, with no shared discard pile; the older rules were ambiguous and some groups used per-deck discard piles. The publisher noted that with Magician's Powers you may use discard piles and reshuffle per location. Unused cards returned to your hand (from an idle Character) are kept.
