His exchange can only happen in the Classroom phase and swaps the taught trick for a new one with the special marker. You get the trick's rewards with the classroom modifiers, but not the classroom's placement bonus. Tricks set aside by Bernard are ignored in end-game scoring (Academy rulebook p. 13).
