Do I have to create a Link when setting up a trick, and where may the marker go on a Performance card?

No. You may start on any Performance card, leave gaps, and need not link to anything. The only requirements are that the category symbol of the marker you place sits in a Link circle, and that the same trick (same color and symbol) is not on one Performance card twice, unless a Special Assignment card or Magician power allows it. The colors on higher-level cards are decorative; links exist only at the colored circles.
