When does a taught trick pay out, and what does it give?

The Performance phase comes before the Classroom phase, so a trick you teach can still be performed that round; its markers are removed in the Classroom phase afterward. From then on the trick gives its classroom slot's yield (usually a subset of its normal yield) automatically each Classroom phase, and it can no longer be performed in the Theater. The one-time placement bonus is separate.
