Components

  • A 20 x 20 cm gameboard made of solid beechwood, treated with protective oils
  • 2 sets of 6 printed wooden dice, in two colors

Setup

Place the Triad gameboard between the players. The game is played with six-sided dice in two colors.

The players choose one color each and roll all of their dice once, placing them in their starting line of the gameboard in ascending order from left to right.

Alternative setup: should the players prefer to start a game with the same disposition, they may choose to have only one player roll their dice and place them according to the rules above, while the opponent uses the same values rolled (placing them from left to right in ascending order from their point of view).

The players alternate taking turns. The starting player is the one with the black dice. In case more than one game is played, the starting player will change from one game to the next.

Object of the Game

Using both their own and their opponent's dice, players must create Triads (lines of 3 dice all with the same values or all with different values I, II and III). Upon creating a Triad, a player removes one of their own dice from play. The winner is the first player to remove from the game their third die.

How to Play

A turn always consists of 3 actions, which must be performed in the following order.

Action 1: Select a Die

The active player selects one of their own dice. The chosen die may have been moved in a previous turn.

Action 2: Rotate the Die

The player rotates the previously selected die onto a new value, to be used in Action 3. After rotating a die, its value cannot be the same as it was before the action.

Action 3: Move the Die

A die must be moved an exact number of spaces as its new value. The movement must be in a straight line horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Other dice may not be jumped during movement. The destination cell must be empty.

Creating a Triad

A Triad consists of a line of 3 dice which fulfil the following conditions:

  • The dice are placed in a straight line, horizontally, vertically or diagonally, with no intervening spaces.
  • At least one die belongs to the active player, and at least one die belongs to the opponent.
  • The dice show all the values I to III (the order is irrelevant) or all three dice show the same value.

As soon as the active player creates a Triad, they choose one of their own dice, which is part of the Triad just created, and removes it from play. This happens even if the Triad is part of a line of 4 or more dice.

Should they create more than one Triad in a single move, the player can only remove one die per turn. The player may choose freely which die to remove from play, as long as it is part of one of the Triads just created.

A Triad present at the beginning of a player's turn does not give them the right to remove a die.

End of the Game

The first player to remove from play 3 of their dice, having created at least 3 Triads, wins the game.
