Setup Changes
The setup works as normal, with these exceptions:
- The Historian has four itineraries of differing difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme). Choose one and place it on the table. The Historian uses only this one itinerary for the whole game, and at the end of a round it does not remove any experience tokens from it.
- Place only 3 Ancestor cards on the space provided for them on the game mat. (The Spanish sheet instead says to include only 3 Ancestor cards when preparing the Ancestor deck.)
- Choose a colour for the Historian. Place its score marker on space 0 of the prestige track, place its crystal container next to its itinerary, and place one time crystal on it. Place its pocket watch on the 12 o'clock space of the clock face, and place your pocket watch on top of it. You begin the game.
Turn Sequence
For you, the turn sequence works the same as in the multiplayer game. When it is the Historian's turn, carry out its actions as described below.
The Historian's Turn
The Historian must always take the History card whose year is furthest back in time, but which is still closer to the present than the top card of its active leg. If no History card is available that would continue the active leg, end the Historian's active leg and begin a new leg with the History card whose year is furthest back in time. The Historian takes no Ancestor cards unless its itinerary explicitly asks it to.
The Historian receives all rewards from the cards it has taken and from its itinerary. Place the Historian's experience tokens on the matching spaces of its itinerary. When the Historian gains prestige points, move its score marker forward on the prestige track accordingly.
Placing Wild Tokens
(Heading in the German sheet: "Welterfahrung platzieren". The W tokens are the Wild tokens; the Spanish sheet calls them "fichas comodín".)
The Historian always places W tokens only after it has placed all of its other experience tokens. Place each W token on the topmost empty space of its itinerary. If several empty spaces qualify, place the token on the one that is furthest to the right.
Example: If the Historian receives 4 W tokens, it places them in this order. (The example itinerary is the Hard one, with the numbers 1 to 4 showing the order of placement.)
Special Symbols
The Historian's itineraries have some special symbols that do not appear on the players' itineraries. When an experience token covers a space with such a symbol, or when a horizontal row ending in such a symbol on the right-hand side is completely filled, the following happens:
- Purple symbol with a red cross: You immediately lose one time crystal. If you have none, nothing happens.
- Purple symbol with a W: The Historian receives a W token and places it on its itinerary.
- Gold symbol with two silhouettes (Ancestor): The Historian receives an Ancestor card. The Ancestor card is added to its active leg, and the W token is placed on its itinerary.
- Red symbol with a cross: The Historian immediately wins the game.
Special Rules
The Medium, Hard and Extreme difficulties introduce additional special rules, which are printed on the Historian's itinerary for the chosen difficulty. Read them carefully before you begin.
Round End
When a round ends, the Historian keeps all of its experience tokens and continues to use the same itinerary in the next round. (The Spanish sheet's heading reads "Final del día", "end of the day", and it refers to "ronda" in the same sense.)
End of Game and Scoring
Scoring works the same as in the multiplayer game. The Historian's legs and its remaining time crystals are scored in the same way as your own. (The Spanish sheet states this explicitly: the Historian's legs are counted, and it scores 1 point for each time crystal it has left.)
Deluxe Tour Bonus Expansion in Solo Mode
You may also play solo mode with the expansion cards. The Historian does not use single-use expansion cards, but it must follow the rule modifications of permanent expansion cards.
Because the expansion cards are an advantage for you, you may give the Historian a head start of 5 prestige points to compensate.
The Spanish printed sheet covers the same bonus under the name "Time Tunnels" ("Túneles del tiempo"), with the following text, translated here:
Using Time Tunnels in Solo Mode
You may include Time Tunnels when you play solo. The Historian does not use activated Time Tunnels, but it must follow the Time Tunnels rule modifiers marked with the ∞ symbol.
Using Time Tunnels in a solo game usually gives the player a small advantage over the Historian. You may choose to offset this advantage by giving the Historian 5 PV on the score track at the start of the game.
