Object Of The Game
The goal is to finish the game with the most points. The game ends when either an explorer or a drone reaches the temple. Players earn points by collecting jungle tokens, which are gained whenever an explorer lands on them. The value of these tokens is revealed at the end of the game, and additional points are awarded based on the finishing positions of explorers and drones.
Set Up
- Lay the LiDAR map board in the centre of the table and place the six drone markers on the corresponding artifact.
- Place the temple on the LiDAR map board, opposite the side of the drones.
- Shuffle all the jungle tokens and place them face up in a meandering path around the board ending at the temple. Place the remaining 5 location tiles face down under the 12th, 24th, 36th, 48th and 60th jungle tokens along the path.
- Place the 3 explorer movers at the start of the path.
- Shuffle the deck of cards and deal 5 to each player. Place the remaining cards in a face-down stack nearby.
Game Play
The most adventurous looking player starts and play progresses clockwise. On your turn, play one card from your hand and place it face up on the discard pile. Then advance the corresponding explorer by the number of tokens as indicated on the card. Count one token after another, ignoring any explorers in between, until the explorer advances the full number. Take the token the explorer lands on from the path and put the explorer in that space.
Illustrated: a card showing 3 is played; the explorer moves across three tokens, ignoring explorers in between, and lands on a token which is then taken as the token earned.
Conclude your turn by drawing a new card from the deck. (If the deck runs out, reshuffle the discard pile next to it to create a new draw deck.) Depending on the token you have taken, deal with the token the following way:
Jungle Tokens
Artifact Token
The token will show one, two or three artifacts discovered in the jungle. Collect the token in front of you. There are six different artifacts, each in a different colour and corresponding to a drone colour on the LiDAR map board. When you take a token of a particular colour, you are hoping that the corresponding drone will end up further along the jungle canopy, reflecting a more favourable position to the temple.
Artifacts and matching drones:
- Red Vase – red drone
- Orange Vulture – orange drone
- Yellow Jaguar – yellow drone
- Green Frog – green drone
- Blue Idol – blue drone
- Purple Mask – purple drone
Explorer Token
The explorer token will show two numbers: the number shown on the left indicates the points earned if this explorer ends the game in first place; the number on the right shows the points earned if this explorer ends the game in second place. When you land on this token, collect it in front of you. You will gain points at the end of the game if you have matching explorer tokens to the explorers that end the game in first or second position on the jungle path.
Drone Token
The drone token will show movement of 2 or 3 spaces. Place the token in front of you and move ONE drone the corresponding number of spaces on the LiDAR map board. When choosing a drone of a particular colour, you will score more points for the matching colour of artifact tokens.
Supply Crate Token
The token will show two, three or four crates on it. Collect the token in front of you. Supply crate tokens will earn one point for each crate shown on a token. The points earned from collecting supply crate tokens aren't dependent on the final ranking of an explorer or drone.
Jungle Tokens Left Behind
After you have dealt with your token, check if there are tokens on the path which now lie behind all three explorers. If so, remove these tokens one by one from the path, starting with the token furthest behind. Depending on the token you have removed, deal with the token in the following way:
- Artifact token: If the token shows one, two or three artifacts, progress the corresponding drone marker on the LiDAR map board by one, two or three spaces, respectively. Then discard the token in the box.
- Supply token, explorer token and drone token: If the token shows an explorer, a drone, or supply crates, discard them into the box without effect.
Location Tiles
If you take a token which lies on top of a location tile, immediately reveal the location tile. The effects are as follows:
- Base Camp: Starting with the player who revealed the location tile and progressing clockwise, each player may discard any number of cards from their hand onto the discard pile and then replenish their hand to five cards from the deck.
- Snake: Starting with the player who revealed the location tile and progressing clockwise, each player must discard one of their displayed artifact tokens into the box. Players who do not have any artifact tokens are spared.
- Glowing Skull Cave: Shuffle all the tokens which have been discarded into the box, draw five of these tokens and add them in a random order as the next five face up tokens on the path from this location. If fewer than five tokens have been discarded, just use these tokens.
- Shrine: Starting with the player who revealed the location tile and progressing clockwise, each player progresses any one of the drone markers on the LiDAR map board by 1 space.
- Pottery Shards: Starting with the player who revealed the location tile and progressing clockwise, each player may discard one of their supply crate tokens into the box. The player then takes any one token (of any kind) from the path and deals with this token as usual. Players who do not have any supply crates cannot take this action.
Game End
The game ends in one of two ways:
- An explorer is advanced onto or beyond the final temple location.
- OR
- A drone is advanced onto or beyond the final temple location.
The player who moves the first explorer or drone marker to reach the temple will receive 5 victory points in the scoring round. The turn leading to the game end is concluded as usual, then the game ends.
Scoring And Winning
Using the score pad to tally each player's score, proceed in the following way.
Illustrated: the explorer at the temple is in first place (left number points), the explorer in second place (right number points), and the explorer in third place (no points).
Calculate The Explorer Points
- First: Determine the explorer that finished the game in first place. All players with that corresponding explorer token earn the points shown on the left side of the token.
- Second: Determine the explorer that finished the game in second place. All players with that corresponding explorer token earn the points shown on the right side of the token.
- Third: For the explorer that finished the game in last place, those corresponding explorer tokens score no points.
Illustrated example: first place 8 points; second place 4 points; third place 0 points.
Calculate The Artifact Points
Drones in first and second position. Determine the drones that finished the game in the first and second position. The matching colour artifact tokens score double. (For example, if the RED drone finishes in first place and you have tokens showing 6 RED vases, you would earn 12 points.)
Illustrated example: 3 + 2 + 1 = 6 red vases; 6 x 2 = 12 points.
Drones in third and fourth position. Determine the drones that finished the game in third and fourth position. The matching colour artifact tokens score single points. (For example if the BLUE drone finishes in third position, and you have artifact tokens showing 5 BLUE idols, you would earn 5 points.)
Illustrated example: 3 + 1 + 1 = 5 points.
Drones in fifth and sixth position. Determine the colour drones that finished the game in 5th and 6th position. The matching colour artifact tokens score no points.
Illustrated: the yellow and purple artifact tokens score 0 points.
Illustrated placing ladder for drones: First – Red Vases x2; Second – Orange Vultures x2; Third – Blue Idols x1; Fourth – Green Frogs x1; Fifth – Yellow Jaguars x0; Sixth – Purple Masks x0.
Finalize And Calculate Score
Players earn one point for each supply crate shown on their supply crate tokens.
Illustrated: a supply crate token showing 2 crates is worth 2 points; a token showing 4 crates is worth 4 points.
The player that was the first to advance either a drone or an explorer to the temple earns five points.
After all the players have calculated their total points, the player with the highest points total is the winner. (In the event of a tie, the player with more supply crates is the winner. If there is still a tie, the players share the victory.)
The score pad lists: Player names; Explorer points (three explorers); Artifact/Drone points (six colours); Total supply crate points; First to the Temple 5 point bonus; Total points.
Ties
Ties occur frequently in scoring and here's how to handle them.
Ties on the LiDAR map board are upgraded:
First, identify the two drone markers that are the closest to the temple. If this is not possible due to ties, then identify more than two drone markers. All corresponding artifact tokens score double.
Next, identify the two drone markers being the furthest away from the temple. If this is not possible due to ties, then identify fewer than two drone markers. All the corresponding artifacts do not score.
Finally, all drone markers not identified as the closest to the temple or furthest away from the temple lead to single scores of the corresponding animal or artifact token.
Illustrated example: First – Yellow Artifacts x2; Second (tie) – Red Artifacts x2 and Blue Artifacts x2; Third (tie) – Orange Artifacts x1 and Green Artifacts x1; Last – Purple Artifacts x0.
Ties amongst the explorers are upgraded:
If the game ends because an explorer is advanced onto or beyond the final temple location, this explorer is in first position. If the other two explorers are not separated through tokens, both are regarded in second position.
If the game ends before an explorer is advanced onto or beyond the final temple location, then explorers in positions not separated through tokens are regarded as in the same position:
First, identify one or more explorers in first position. If not all three explorers are in first position, then identify one explorer in last position. If this is not possible, because the other two explorers are in the same position, both are regarded in second position.
Illustrated: the first-place explorer scores the left number of points; the tied second-place explorers score the right number of points.
Solo Player Rules
As you are the only player, you take one turn after another, from the beginning to the end of the game. However, you have two adversaries eager to collect treasures to showcase in their museums: the Institute of Ancient Cultures and the Rainforest Relics Conservatory.
Set Up: Set up the game as usual, but leave the Location Tiles in the box.
Game Play: Play as usual, turn after turn. In the solo play, after you draw a card at the end of your turn, your adversaries also demand a toll.
Toll: Remove the token that is now at the start of the jungle path. (This happens after you have removed any tokens that were left behind all three explorers.)
Depending on the token which you removed as a toll, resolve it in the following ways:
- Artifact, Supply Crate, or Explorer Tokens: Display this token face up opposite of you. This token now belongs to your adversaries. (Illustrated: the toll is paid to your adversaries.)
- Drone Token: If it is a drone token, progress the drone that is furthest away from the temple by the respective 2 or 3 spaces as shown on the token. If there is a tie with more than one drone, progress all of the drones furthest away from the temple by 1 space.
Game End: The game ends as usual; either an explorer advances on the path onto or beyond the temple, or a drone reaches the temple.
Scoring: Score the game as usual, for yourself and for Institute of Ancient Cultures. The Rainforest Relics Conservatory earns the same score as Institute of Ancient Cultures, with the exception that all supply crates count as a value of 10 instead of one.
- If your score is lower than Institute of Ancient Cultures' score, you lose. Take another chance and play again!
- If you beat Institute of Ancient Cultures' score, you have successfully reached the temple. Congratulations!
- If your score is lower than Rainforest Relics Conservatory's score, alas, you will not be granted access to the temple.
- If you beat Rainforest Relics Conservatory's score, wonderful! Wonderful treasures will be your gifts!
