Start positions
The eight white cogs are placed in a line on the bottom rank with the Master Cog fourth from the left, and the black cogs on the top rank, with the Master Cog likewise fourth from the left.
Transcriber's note: on the photographed box, the word following "Master Cog" in the top-rank sentence is obscured by a crease. The visible fragment ends in "-outh"; it is transcribed here as "fourth" (matching the bottom rank) and should be checked against a clean copy of the rules.
Rules
The box prints these numbered rules without a heading; "Rules" is an editorial label.
- White plays first.
- One cog only is moved for a player's turn.
- A cog (including the Master Cog) may be moved one peg distance in any direction, vertical, horizontal or diagonal.
- A cog may not jump another, but may pass through the diagonal between two cogs.
- At any stage in the game, a player may, on the completion of their move, elect to turn their Master Cog. If this turns the opponent's Master Cog in the direction of its arrow, they win. A player may turn their own Master Cog in either direction to achieve this result, but if the opponent's Master Cog fails to turn or turns in the wrong direction, they lose the game.
