Cards
The game uses four kinds of cards. Each kind carries a picture and a syllable:
- tomato (tomato picture)
- ma (shown as a demon)
- mato (shown as a target)
- to (shown as a door)
How to Play
- Turn over four kinds of cards.
- Read the line of cards. Each card is read as its syllable, from left to right, and the cards together form one word. For example, a tomato card followed by a door card reads "tomatoto", and a tomato, door, demon and demon line reads "tomatotomama".
- As the game goes on, the line gets longer and harder, and it becomes increasingly confusing to read. The infographic shows a long line of eleven cards (tomato, to, ma, ma, mato, to, mato, mato, tomato, ma, to) and the spoken word printed in its speech bubble: "tomatotomamamatotomatomatotomatomato".
Gaps In This Transcription
The infographic is a summary of core play only. The following are not shown in the source and are not transcribed here:
- Setup, including the number of cards dealt or placed and how many players the game supports.
- Turn order and what a player does with the turn after reading the line.
- How a reading is judged correct or incorrect, and what happens on a mistake.
- Win and lose conditions, scoring, and the end of the game.
- Whether the rules use any dice, and any simplified or variant rules (a "no dice" variant is mentioned in outside commentary but is not in the source).
- Card counts for each kind.
