Overview
This expansion is played with the base game Tokaido. It adds new Traveler tiles, new Encounter cards, Matsuri events and additional treasures to the journey.
Components
- 1 game board
- 6 Amulet cards
- 6 Legendary Object cards
- 6 Bathhouse cards
- 6 Calligraphy cards
- 18 Matsuri cards
- 6 Cherry Tree cards
- 1 Fortune die
- 25 Traveler tiles
- 5 Reference tiles
- 4 Encounter cards
- 4 Closed Space tokens
- 20 Journey point tokens
Setup
Set up the Tokaido game following the usual rules. Then set up the expansion as follows:
- Place the expansion board just above the Tokaido board. Place the following cards as separate face-down stacks on their corresponding spaces on the expansion board (no need to shuffle):
- Amulet cards
- Legendary Object cards
- Bathhouse cards
- Calligraphy cards
- Cherry Tree cards
- Shuffle the Matsuri cards and set the deck face-down on the expansion board.
- Place the Fortune die on the expansion board.
- Place the Closed Space tokens and the Journey point tokens next to the bank.
- Shuffle the new Encounter cards and Travelers in with the originals. If you wish, you may draw 3 Travelers to choose from instead of 2, or directly take the Traveler of your choice.
Gap in the printed rulebook: the Components list includes 5 Reference tiles and 4 Closed Space tokens, and Setup step 4 places the Closed Space tokens by the bank, but the rulebook never describes what either is used for. No rule for them is transcribed here; the printed text is complete as it stands.
Journey points
Whenever you score a "Journey point" (typically from a Matsuri card), gain a Journey point token and immediately gain those points on the score track. Journey point tokens exist solely as a reminder that you scored those points, as most other points come from any cards that you've gained and placed in front of you. Should the need arise, these tokens can be used to confirm or recalculate final scores.
New effects of the spaces
When playing with this expansion, every space provides Travelers with a choice between a standard and a "Crossroads" benefit.
Panoramas
Now, when a Traveler stops at a Panorama space (Paddy, Mountain, or Sea), they must choose between:
- Gaining a Panorama card of the corresponding type.
- Gaining 1 Cherry Tree card (if available).
The Cherry Tree cards immediately give 1 coin and 2 points.
Note: Unlike Panoramas, the Cherry Trees are not made up of sections to be collected, and as a result there are no Achievement cards corresponding to the Cherry Trees.
There is no limit to the number of Cherry Trees a player can accumulate. Keep them face up.
Hot Springs
Now, when a Traveler stops at a Hot Springs space, they must choose between:
- Drawing a Hot Spring card.
- Paying 1 coin to gain a Bathhouse card (if available).
The Bathhouse cards immediately give 4 points. Keep them face up.
Note: A Bathhouse is counted as a Hot Spring for the awarding of the "Bather" achievement.
Farms
Now, when a Traveler stops at a Farm space, they must choose between:
- Gaining 3 coins.
- Betting 2 coins at the Gaming Room.
The Gaming Room
The player bets 2 coins from their reserve and rolls the Fortune die.
Results:
- X: the player loses the money bet.
- x1: the player recovers the money bet.
- x2: the player doubles the money bet.
- x3: the player triples the money bet.
- x4: the player quadruples the money bet.
Coins lost go to the bank; coins gained come from the bank.
Temples
Now, when a Traveler stops at a Temple space, they must choose between:
- Donating 1, 2, or 3 coins to the Temple.
- Paying 1 coin to gain an available Amulet card.
The Amulet cards confer a single-use effect. The player chooses from among those available, keeping the selected card face down until they decide to use it. A player may have any number of Amulet cards in their possession.
A player may not use an Amulet card on the same turn they gained it. To use an Amulet card, discard it to its stack (where it becomes available again) and gain its benefit.
Example card shown in the rulebook: an Amulet card titled "Fortune", with the printed text "Discard this at the beginning of your turn to roll the Fortune die. Gain coins equal to the resulting number."
Shops
Now, when a Traveler stops at a Shop space, they must choose between:
- Drawing 3 Souvenir cards and purchasing 1 or more of them.
- Paying coins to gain any 1 Legendary Object card (even one with the same benefit as another Legendary Object you already have). Choose from all available Legendary Object cards, pay the coin cost shown in the bottom left corner of the card, and keep it face up. Score it immediately as shown/described on the chosen card. Some Legendary Objects have an additional ongoing effect.
Note: Legendary Objects are considered to be Souvenirs for the awarding of the "Collector" achievement.
Callout on the example Legendary Object card shown in the rulebook: "This counts as a new type of Souvenir (score it now)."
Encounters
Now, when a Traveler stops at an Encounter space, they must choose between:
- Drawing 1 Encounter card.
- Paying 1 coin to gain any 1 Calligraphy card (keep it face down).
Unlike most other cards, Calligraphy cards score at the end of the game. The player chooses from among those available, keeping the selected card face down until the end of the game.
Note: Calligraphy cards are considered to be Encounters for the awarding of the "Chatterbox" achievement.
Example card shown in the rulebook: a Calligraphy card with the printed end-of-game text "Score 2 for each Achievement you won and 1 for each of your Calligraphies including this card."
Inns
When all Travelers have arrived at 1 of the 3 intermediate Inns (after using abilities and buying Meals), the player who arrived first now draws 2 Matsuri cards, chooses 1, and discards the other secretly to the bottom of the deck. They read the chosen Matsuri card aloud and apply its effect. Travelers' abilities do not apply to the effects of Matsuri cards. Unless it has an ongoing effect, discard it to the bottom of the deck.
Matsuri cards are marked with one of two icons:
- Swirl icon: ongoing effect until next Inn.
- Lightning icon: one-time immediate effect.
Example Matsuri card shown in the rulebook, header "O-Fune Matsuri", titled "The Ships":
Each Traveler immediately gains the next section of their Sea Panorama and scores the corresponding points.
- If a player has already finished their Sea Panorama, they don't benefit from this Matsuri.
- If several players simultaneously finish their Sea Panoramas as a result of this Matsuri, they each score for the Sea Panorama achievement. Use a "3 Journey points" token to represent the award.
Notes
The Tokaido Travelers' abilities work with the Crossroads benefits, introduced in this expansion. So, Mitsukuni the Old earns 1 point if he takes a Bathhouse card. In the same way, Umegae the Street Entertainer earns 1 coin and 1 point if she buys a Calligraphy card.
However, the effects of the Encounter cards are limited to the Tokaido benefits and do not extend to the Crossroads benefits. So, a Guide (Annaibito) does not let you select a Cherry Tree, a Priest (Miko) does not let you purchase an Amulet, and a Craftsman (Shokunin) does not let you take a Legendary Object.
