Components

  • 1 game board (Spielplan)
  • 55 task cards (Aufgabenkarten)
  • 32 tiles (Plättchen): each tile shows 2 spaces with the numbers 1-4 in the colours orange, pink, green and purple.
  • 10 gap fillers (Lückenfüller): each gap filler shows 1 space with the number 0 in the colour black.

Idea of the Game

In Tippi Toppi – Hoch Hinaus! you all play together and try to win against the game. Fulfil all the tasks before you can no longer place tiles. Taking turns, you place tiles on the game board. You can place tiles on top of each other and so keep building higher.

If you manage to fulfil all the tasks before you can no longer place a tile, you have won together!

Setup

  1. Place the game board with the blue side up in the middle, within easy reach of everyone. In later games you can also play with the purple reverse side.

  2. Shuffle the 55 task cards face down and then place tasks as follows:

    • Place 4 tasks face down at the storage spaces to the left of the game board. These are bonus tasks (Zusatzaufgaben) that you may receive in the course of the game.
    • Place 4 tasks face up to the right of the game board. This is where your open tasks lie.
    • Finally, depending on the desired difficulty, count out tasks and form a face-down draw pile with them:

Put the remaining tasks back in the box.

  1. Place the number of gap fillers shown on the game board on each of the 4 face-down bonus tasks to the left of the game board (2 on the first task, 2 on the second, 3 on the third, and 3 again on the fourth task).

  2. Shuffle the 32 tiles face down. Then each of you takes 3 tiles, which you hold face down in your hand. Never show them to your fellow players! Place the remaining tiles, still face down, as a reserve above the game board.

Example setup (illustration): bonus tasks and gap fillers on the left; tile reserve above the board; hands; draw pile; open tasks on the right. Example open tasks shown: "There is NO PURPLE on the EDGE"; "PINK is in THREE different HEIGHTS"; "Exactly FIVE GREEN"; "Exactly ONE GREEN"; "Exactly FIVE ORANGE".

Course of Play

The person who most recently climbed may start. Every turn looks the same:

  1. Place 1 tile from your hand on the game board. (Optionally, you can place a gap filler first.)
  2. Fulfil tasks if possible, and replenish them if applicable.
  3. Draw 1 tile.

Then the person to your left takes their turn.

1. Placing a Tile

You must place exactly 1 of your 3 tiles face up on the game board or on tiles already lying on it. You must observe the following placement rules:

  • You must place the tile directly on the game board or on 2 other tiles.
  • You may not place the tile exactly congruent on top of one other tile!
  • The tile must completely cover 2 spaces and must not extend over the edge.
  • You may rotate your tile as you like (so the numbers on it may also be "upside down").
  • And of course every tile must always lie flat!

(The rulebook illustrates each of these rules with pictures of correct and incorrect placements.)

Option: Placing a Gap Filler

Before you place your tile, you may play exactly 1 gap filler.

You may place it on any space.

Take the gap filler from the 1st bonus task. If there are none left there, take it from the 2nd, and so on.

If you take the last gap filler from a bonus task, place that task face down on your draw pile (or lay it face up directly if fewer than 4 open tasks are lying out).

Important: In your turn you must play 1 tile. You may not forgo this! The gap filler can be placed in addition. You can place your tile on the gap filler, but you do not have to.

Gap Filler Example

In the upper left corner a single gap has formed on which no tile can be placed. Now it is your turn. First you take a gap filler from the first bonus task and put it in the corner.

Since no gap filler now remains on the bonus task, you place it face down on the draw pile. Then you place your tile on this 0 and the neighbouring tile. The gap is filled!

2. Fulfilling Tasks

Now look at the 4 open tasks lying face up. If you fulfil one or more of them, put them on a pile of completed tasks. Then turn up tasks from the draw pile until 4 tasks are lying out again.

Notes:

  • Tasks always refer to the 12 visible spaces as seen from above. Height differences therefore play no role! Exception: 4 tasks refer explicitly to height.
  • The short rows of 3 spaces from left to right are the rows (Zeilen), the long rows of 4 spaces from top to bottom are the columns (Spalten). The 10 outer number spaces form the edge (Rand).
  • Tasks must be fulfilled as their wording states:
    • "THREE PINK in a ROW or COLUMN" is fulfilled as soon as at least 3 pink spaces are present in a row or column. Other pink spaces may still be visible.
    • "Exactly FIVE GREEN" is not fulfilled, however, if 4 or 6 green spaces are visible. There must be exactly 5!
  • The gap fillers can help you with the tasks: the 0 is an even number and has the (fifth) colour black.
  • It is possible for several tasks to be fulfilled in one turn, or for a newly turned-up task to be fulfilled immediately (lucky you!). That task is then discarded immediately and a new one is turned up from the draw pile.

3. Drawing

At the end of your turn, draw a tile so that you have 3 tiles in hand again. If the reserve is empty, you continue playing without drawing.

Communication

To fulfil as many tasks as possible, you should help each other. However, you are restricted in what you may talk about:

  • You may not name the number values and colours on your tiles.
  • You may discuss where you want to place your next tiles and/or which tasks you can help with.
  • You may discuss where a gap filler should be placed and which tasks should be fulfilled next by the group.

End of the Game

The game ends when one of the following conditions is met:

WON! You win as soon as the draw pile is empty and you have no open tasks left.

Make sure that by placing a gap filler you can receive an additional task even in the supposedly last turn!

LOST! You lose if a person is on turn and cannot place a tile any more (because they have none in hand or there is no possibility to place one).

This can happen at any difficulty level, regardless of how well you play. Just try again!

Variant for Tippi Toppi Pros

If you are already really good at Tippi Toppi, try the following additional placement rule:

One of the two spaces of your tile must have the same colour and/or the same number as the space lying underneath it. Both may also match.

Attention: Only one space on your tile has to follow this rule, not both!

The gap fillers serve as jokers here: they may be placed on any space, and any tile may be placed on a gap filler.

Alternative Game Board

You can play both the base game and the variant for Pros on the purple reverse side of the board. Some gap fillers are already printed there.
