Overview

In TINY FOOTPRINT you and your fellow players play as a family or a household where every player has unique capabilities. Through prioritization of your time, actions and resources (individually and collectively) you try to complete climate missions to reduce emissions enough to reach the climate target and thereby win the game.

TIP 1: Let one person read through the rules and understand how to play the game before you all sit down to play.

TIP 2: This a cooperative game. Tell the others what your plan is, ask for help to complete your missions and give each other cards. One player cannot win the game for everyone.

TIP 3: Don't let one player decide what everyone else should do in every given situation. Agree on what you should do through collaboration, not through instruction.

Game Contents

  • 3 Residence Cards
  • 9 Lifestyle Cards
  • 1 Game Board
  • 16 Player Cards
  • 16 Encouragement & Resistance Cards
  • 10-sided dice
  • 50 Mission Cards
  • 110 Resource Cards (40 Discipline & Commitment, 30 Finances)
  • 94 wooden cubes

Set Up Phase

1. Place Game Board and Turn Marker

  1. Place the game board within reach of all players.
  2. Place a white cube on turn 1 on the board.

2. Distribute Action Cubes

Each player chooses a color to play and takes Action Cubes according to the table:

# PlayersCubes
1 player12
2 players6
3 players4
4-6 players3

PLEASE NOTE! White and Blue should not be used as player colors since they will be used as extra cubes during the game.

3. Choose Roles and Draw Player Cards

Decide which player roles (regular Characters or Gamers) you will be playing. You can play any combination of roles you would like, up to the 6 player maximum.

Divide the roles you have chosen to play in to separate piles and then draw one player card per player. Acquaint yourself with your player card and keep it in front of you for the duration of the game.

Example: in this game the player chose to play as a regular Character and draws the second card in the pile and will play as a "Foodie".

4. Place Encouragement & Resistance Cards

Shuffle the Encouragement & Resistance Cards face down into one pile next to the board. These cards will be explained later in the rule book.

5. Place and Draw Resource Cards

  1. Shuffle and place the Resource Cards face down into three separate piles.
  2. All players draw resource cards as per their Player Cards.

Example: The Foodie draws one gray (Discipline) card, one green (Commitment) card and one yellow (Finances) card.

6. Place and Draw Mission Cards

Shuffle and place the Mission Card deck, face down, next to the board. The number of mission cards each player draws is determined by the number of players. The youngest player starts drawing a mission card and then continue clockwise. Draw one card at a time, read it aloud and then the next player draws a card.

If it is an Adversity (Red Mission) immediately follow the instructions on the card. The Adversity cards count as missions and you may not draw another mission card as replacement.

# PlayersMission Cards
1 player8
2 players4
3 players3
4 players2
5-6 players1

7. Place Emission Markers

Place a white cube as an emission marker on each emission category as per the following:

TransportHousingFoodConsumption
49 (4,9 tonnes)492121

8. Determine the Household's Residence and Lifestyle

Shuffle the Residence Cards and draw one card to determine your Residence. Follow the instructions on the card. Repeat the process with the Lifestyle Cards.

Example: You drew the Residence Card "Suburbs" which means you need to add 3 in emissions for Housing which gives you a starting emission for Housing of 24. You also add 2 in emissions for Consumption which takes you to 23.

Example: After the Residence Card you draw a Lifestyle Card and you draw "Meat Eaters". First you add 5 in emissions for Food and then 2 in emissions for both Consumption and Housing.

With a starting emission of 140 (14 tonnes) your residence and lifestyle have increased your starting emission to 154 (15,4 tonnes). You now need to reduce your emissions by 154 to win.

Lifestyle Cards

With the Lifestyle Cards you can change the difficulty of the game. The Sun Seekers are for instance more challenging than The Recyclers. This gives you an opportunity to set the level of difficulty of the game.

On the back of the Lifestyle Cards you can see which level they are and you can choose to draw cards from the selected difficulty level.

There are four levels of difficulty:

  • Normal - good for the first time you play
  • Tricky - offers a bit more of a challenge
  • Hard - now it starts gettting more challenging
  • Epic - choose a Lifestyle Card from the Hard level and remove the blue Household Cubes from the game

9. All Done. Start Playing!

The youngest player starts this and the following turns.

How to Play the Game - Actions

You play the game by using Action Cubes to perform your actions. You perform one action then play proceeds clockwise to the next player. You continue like this until all Actions Cubes have been used. Then the turn is over. After the Refresh Phase you start the next turn.

Continue play until five turns have been completed; the amount of time you have to reach the target of 0 in every category.

For every action you perform you place an Action Cube on the corresponding space on the game board.

There are two types of actions to perform:

  1. Draw a Card (1 or 3 cards)
  2. Play a Card (Resource Card or Mission Card)

Draw a Card: This action means you get to draw a card, either a Resource Card or a Mission Card.

Draw three cards: Same action as above, but here you spend two Action Cubes to draw three cards (Resource Cards or Mission Cards, any combination).

Play a Card: Play a card to perform the action described on the Resource Card or to attempt a Mission Card. After playing them, discard completed missions and resource cards. Keep failed missions in front of you.

About Resource Cards

  • Some Resource Cards will say Support or Reaction. Support Cards may only be played before you roll the dice on a Dice Mission (see p. 10 on Dice missions). Reaction Cards may only be played when you draw a Resistance Card during a Dice Mission.
  • Resource Cards should always be discarded after use.
  • If a deck of Resource Card runs out, reshuffle the discard pile into a new Resource Card pile.

Mission Cards

Each Mission Card shows: a Name; an Emission Value, which is how much you get to reduce your emissions if you succeed with the mission; an Emission Category, the type of emission (Transport, Housing, Food or other Consumption); an Emission Prerequisite, where some missions require you to have lowered your emissions to a certain point in that category to be able to complete the mission; a Resource Cost, the cost in resource cards to complete the mission; an Information area about the mission; and a Dice Mission marker, where if the card has a dice icon on it, it is a Dice Mission.

There are four types of Mission Cards:

1. Regular Mission

A regular mission is a mission where you succeed with the mission when you pay the resource cost and place an Action Cube to complete the mission. When you have completed the mission you reduce your emission of the corresponding Emission Category with the Emission Value stated on the card.

Example: to complete the mission "BUY LOCAL" all you need to do is to place an Action Cube on the game board space where it says "PLAY A CARD" and pay (which means discarding) the resource cost which is 1 green resource card. Then you discard the mission card and reduce the purple emissions for food by 2.

2. Adversity Missions

Sometimes things happen beyond our control that make living sustainably a little bit harder. In the game this is represented by adversary mission cards. Adversity Cards have a red bar and the text ADVERSITY on the card.

When you draw an Adversity Card immediately follow the instructions on the card, then discard the card. Do not draw a new mission card as replacement.

Example: you have drawn the Adversity Card "WEDDING ABROAD" and every player needs to immediately discard all their gray Resource Cards.

3. Missions with Emission Prerequisites

Some missions have a prerequisite that you have to meet before you can complete the mission. This means that you need to have reduced the emissions in the corresponding category to or below that value to be able to play the Mission Card.

Example: the mission "HYBRID TO ELECTRIC" has an Emission Prerequisite of 38. So you must have reached or gone below that level on the game board in the TRANSPORT category to be able to play this Mission Card.

4. Dice Missions

When your Mission Card has a dice in the bottom right hand corner it is a Dice Mission. A Dice Mission is a more challenging mission to complete and there are some additional steps to completing these missions.

You can also fail or just parly succeed with a Dice Mission. If you fail, you keep your Mission Card and can attempt to complete it again at any point later in the game. (The value 5 on the dice has no importance).

Steps During a Dice Mission

  1. Tell your co-players that you are completing a Dice Mission so they can decide if they want to play a Support or Reaction Card.
  2. Pay the card's Resource Cost and place an Action Cube on the "Play a Card" space on the Game Board.
  3. Any player may play a Support Card. If you do, place an Action Cube in the "Play a Card" space.
  4. Once everyone has played their Support Cards you draw the top card from the Encouragement/Resistance Deck. This may improve or lower your chances during the Dice roll. (These cards will be explained in more detail on Page 12).
  5. If you draw a Resistance Card you may play a Reaction Card against it. Place an Action Cube then discard the Reaction Card as well as the Resistance Card and then draw a new Encouragement/Resistance Card.
  6. Roll the Dice and add all the + / - effects from the cards. Resolve the outcome as per the Dice Outcome table on the game board. (See table below). Gain Support Card advantages and discard those Support Cards.

NOTE! To roll a 0 with the dice equals 0 and not 10.

Dice Roll Outcome

Action Cubes

Individual Action Cubes

The number of Cubes you have is determined by the number of players. Action Cubes placed on the game board are returned to the player at the end of the turn. You can increase the number of Action Cubes you have during the game through different Cards or Characters. A player can never have more than 12 individual Action Cubes, not including white Action Cubes.

One Time Action Cubes

You can get white Action Cubes through Resource Cards. The difference between white Action Cubes and colored Action Cubes is that they return to the bank at the end of the turn and not to the player. If all white Cubes have been placed on the game board you have reached their limit for this turn and cannot play further White Action Cubes this turn.

Household Cubes

You gain access to the blue Household Cubes by reducing your emissions to or past the numbers highlighted in blue within each Emission Category. As soon as you reach or go past a blue square you can activate a Household Cube and place it on its assigned place on the game board. It becomes available for play immediately.

Just like the other Cubes the Household Cubes are used for actions and should be moved from the HOUSEHOLD CUBES space to the appropriate Action Space on the game board when you use it.

Any player may use a Household Cube but you have to collectively agree as a household how to put it to best use.

At the reset phase Household Cubes should be returned to their assigned place on the game board and can be used again every following turn.

Encouragement/Resistance Cards

There are external factors that influence our ability to live sustainably, such as regulation and economic incentives, advertising or social norms. These factors are represented in the game by the ENCOURAGEMENT/RESISTANCE Cards that you draw when you are trying to complete a Dice Mission.

Note: both effects should be applied as soon as you draw the card.

Reset Phase - At the End of a Turn

  1. Return All Action Cubes

    • Collect your individual Action Cubes and move any Household Cubes back to their assigned space on the game board.
    • Return any white Action Cubes that have been used to the bank.
  2. Draw Resource Cards

    • As during the Set Up phase each player draws Resource Cards as per their Player Card.

  1. Draw Mission Cards

    • Draw new Mission Cards (keep unfinished ones).
  2. Move the Turn Marker

    • Move the Turn Marker one step and begin the next turn.

End of the Game

  • You win the game by reducing all Emissions Category to 0 before Turn 5 ends. This means you have reached the Climate Target of two tonnes CO2 emissions per person and year.
  • You lose the game if you still have emissions left at the end of Turn 5. Try again with new characters and a new strategy.
