  • 4 Valkyrie Mats
  • 6 Valkyrie Cards
  • 6 Einherjar Cards
  • 9 Giant Tokens
  • 6 God Mats

Overview

This expansion adds two new actions to those of the base game:

  • Slay a Giant (see page 4)
  • Deploy a Valkyrie (see page 6)

Setup

Perform the normal setup, with these additional steps:

  1. Use the North Mordant Ocean Board instead of the one from the base game.
  2. Each player receives a Valkyrie Mat and 3 Valkyries of their color.
    • 2A. They place this mat next to their Clan Mat.
    • 2B. They place the 3 Valkyries on the spaces of their mat.
  3. Shuffle the Giants without revealing the value shown on their backs, then place 1 Giant in each region, keeping its value hidden. Return the unused Giants to the box, still without checking their values.
  4. Shuffle the 6 Valkyrie cards and the 6 Einherjar cards into the Viking deck.
  5. Shuffle the 6 God Mats together with those of the base game before drawing.

The North Mordant Ocean Board

The main difference between this board and the one in the base game is that some islands are divided into separate regions by borders. Unless the rules state otherwise, treat each region as a full island. For example, if an island has two regions, each one has its own Rune, and the Influence provided by each region is counted separately.

  • Exploring with a Settler (or a Temple) also lets you move from one region to an adjacent region by crossing the border.
  • At the intersection of a border and an island's shoreline, there may be a dock. When you Sail to this dock, you may deploy your Settlers onto either or both of the regions (as shown by the arrows leaving the dock). The number of Settlers you may deploy is still limited to the value of your Sail action. A Longboat moored at this dock grants 2 Influence to each region.

Slay a Giant

On your turn, during Phase 2: Actions, instead of playing a card for a battle or an action, you may play it faceup, declaring that you "Slay a Giant." To do so, 1 of your Valkyries and 3 of your Settlers must occupy a region with a Giant (this is reminded on the right side of the Valkyrie Mat). You MUST slay if you choose this action: you may not declare "slay" and then not do it. Be careful: the Strength of a Viking card is not taken into account when slaying.

A. Once all the necessary tokens occupy a region with a Giant, B. you sacrifice your 3 Settlers (return them to your Clan Mat) and take the Giant, which you place near your Clan Mat (the Valkyrie stays where it is). You may check the value of the Giants you have slain at any time, but it remains secret until final scoring. There is no limit to the number of Giants you may slay. C. In honor of your Jarl's God, increase by 1 the Fury of the God matching the Rune of the Viking card played (but do not gain the Valhalla Boon).

Playing a Valkyrie or Einherjar Card

The cost of the Slay a Giant action is reduced if the card used is a Valkyrie or an Einherjar (as shown at the bottom of the Battle section of these cards):

  • For a Valkyrie: It is no longer necessary to have a Valkyrie token in the region, as the card already fulfills this requirement.
  • For an Einherjar: It is no longer necessary to have 3 Settlers in the region; 2 are enough. In addition, only 2 Settlers are sacrificed.

Temple Blocking

While a Giant occupies a region, no player may build a Temple there, Explore with a Temple into it, or use a Valkyrie to carry a Temple into it (as shown on the Valkyrie Mat). A Temple already present in a region that a Giant moves into may remain there.

Phase 3: Cleanup

A new step is added to the Cleanup phase. For each Giant occupying a region, reduce by 1 the Fury of the God matching the Rune of that region. Fury cannot go below 0.

Example: a Giant on an island reduces the Fury of the God matching that island's Rune by 1.

Combat with Valkyries and Einherjars

When you play Valkyries and Einherjars facedown to start or join a battle, they have a specific Strength shown on their card:

  • The Strength of a Valkyrie depends on the number of Valkyries you have deployed on the Ocean Board. It is 4 times that number.
  • The Strength of an Einherjar depends on the number of Giants you have slain. It is 4 times that number.

Valkyrie Joker Rune

Each Valkyrie card shows a Joker Rune, which represents any Rune of your choice. It may be used to boost an action, and to decide which God you gain the Valhalla Boon from and whose Fury increases if the Valkyrie card loses the battle (the same Rune must then be chosen for both).

Leader and Rune Actions for Valkyries and Einherjars

Valkyries and Einherjars may be played faceup to perform their Leader Action and/or Rune Action. Each requires a different condition:

  • Einherjar cards require that you have slain at least 1 Giant.
  • Valkyrie cards require that you have already deployed 1 or 2 Valkyries on the board.

In addition, two new Rune actions appear:

  • Move a Giant to an adjacent region (by Ferry or by crossing a border), provided that no Giant already occupies that region (there may be only one Giant per region). You may move it into a region containing Temples (without removing the Temple).
  • Raid a Village in a region occupied by at least 1 of your units, without paying the Steel cost.

Valkyries

Only the clans most devoted to the Gods have the privilege of hosting these fearsome warriors. They help slay Giants and conquer islands. They can carry Settlers, and even Temples, to adjacent islands thanks to their powerful wings!

Deploy a Valkyrie

If you lose a battle and gain a Valhalla Boon, you may also choose to deploy the Valkyrie of that God (see p. 7). Take a Valkyrie from your Valkyrie Mat and place it in the region of your choice.

Valkyries on the Board

Valkyries are similar to Settlers, with a few differences:

  • Each one grants 2 Influence and is considered a ground unit. When you deploy or move a Valkyrie into a region containing a Rune, and you then have more Influence there than the player who controls it, you immediately take control of it.
  • They cannot be deployed with the Sail action. They are only deployed through a Valhalla Boon (see above).
  • When Attacking Opponents' Settlers, a Valkyrie does not count toward your total of Settlers occupying a region (unless it carries a Settler, see below). You may not remove a Valkyrie to use the Rune action Smite a Settler, nor to Attack Opponents' Settlers in a region.
  • Valkyries cannot be replaced by Settlers to Slay a Giant.

Special Valkyrie Movement

When you perform the Explore with a Settler action, you may instead:

  • Move 1 Valkyrie to an adjacent region.
  • OR pay 1 Food to move the Valkyrie AND carry 1 Settler from the Valkyrie's starting region to its destination region.
  • OR pay 3 Steel to move the Valkyrie AND carry 1 Temple from the Valkyrie's starting region to its destination region.

Players may perform only one of these options: they may not spend 1 Food and 3 Steel to carry both at the same time.

The Three Valkyrie Runes

The three Valkyries are each associated with the active Rune of your card that lost the battle. If you have already deployed the Valkyrie associated with that Rune, it cannot be replaced by a Valkyrie associated with another Rune.

Valkyrie Harvest Bonus

When you perform a Harvest action, you also gain the bonus resources of the Valkyries you have deployed.

Setup for 2 Players

When you use the North Mordant Ocean Board, the 3 regions cited in step 3 of the Solo rules below are the 3 "outer islands." The enemy's 3 starting Temples are still placed on the islands with the Giants.

Final Scoring for Giants

At the end of the game, each player adds to their score the Victory Points shown on the back of each Giant they have slain.

Solo Setup: Ragnarok

  1. On the back of the Valkyrie Mats are 4 Enemy Mats. Although the enemy mats of the base game are compatible with Ragnarok, we recommend choosing one of the new enemy mats. Likewise, we advise against using the Ragnarok mats to play without the expansion, as they are designed for this expansion.
  2. Give the enemy 1 Valkyrie Mat (Valkyrie side visible) and place 6 Valkyries on it (3 of each color), stacking them 2 by 2 on each space.
  3. Place the North Mordant Ocean Board with its "1-3 players" side visible. Randomly determine the enemy's starting region from the 3 regions shown opposite, then place the Solo Drakkar on the dock circled in that region (as indicated).

Solo Adjustments

When playing with the North Mordant Ocean Board, if the Solo Drakkar sails to a dock connected to a land border (separating 2 regions) and deploys Settlers, it always focuses on the region matching the Rune of the card. For any other action where the enemy must choose among several regions, simply count whether it has played an odd or even number of cards (counting its Leader Row and Battle Row):

  • Odd: it focuses on the westernmost region.
  • Even: it focuses on the easternmost region.

Example: if the enemy has played 4 cards, when it is moored at this dock it focuses on the region to the east.

Enemy Slays a Giant

The enemy slays a Giant when it:

  1. performs the Resource Action Place a Temple: if the region of the Solo Drakkar is occupied by a Giant, instead of placing a Temple there, it slays the Giant;
  2. deploys a Valkyrie into a region occupied by a Giant: it slays the Giant.

In both cases, return ALL of the enemy's Settlers in that region to its Clan Mat (the enemy does not need to have any Settler in the region). The slain Giant is placed near the enemy's Clan Mats. Do not reveal the points on the back of the Giant before final scoring. Then increase by 1 the Fury of the God, according to the enemy's current card.

Enemy Valkyries

The enemy deploys a Valkyrie if it loses a battle and the active Rune of its card matches one of its available Valkyries on its mat. Place the Valkyrie in the Solo Drakkar's region. Once placed, it can never move. However, if an enemy Valkyrie already occupies that region, the new Valkyrie cannot be deployed (the enemy is limited to 1 Valkyrie per region).

Enemy Valkyrie Harvest Bonus

If both Valkyries stacked on one of the enemy's spaces have been deployed (so that space is empty), the enemy gains the resource shown on that space as a bonus whenever it Harvests.

Enemy Valkyrie and Einherjar Cards

The enemy treats these cards as normal Viking cards, ignoring their Slay a Giant ability. The Rune actions Move a Giant and Raid a Village are replaced by the actions on the Enemy Mat, with the Rune action to perform determined as follows:

  • With an Einherjar, it performs the action defined by the Rune of the card.
  • With a Valkyrie with a Joker Rune, it chooses the Rune matching the region of the Solo Drakkar. This determines the Valhalla Boon to gain and the God whose Fury is increased.
