Game Components

  • 6 light pieces
  • 6 dark pieces
  • 14 light discs
  • 14 dark discs
  • 1 board

Object of the Game

Each player tries to place all of their discs on the board as quickly as possible. The first player to do so wins.

Setup

The players put the discs of their color in front of them and place their pieces in the second row of the board (marks face down), as shown in the illustration. Then the players draw lots for the right to move first.

Gameplay

A player's turn consists of two or three consecutive actions.

1. Moving a piece

First, the player moves one of their pieces horizontally or vertically any number of squares. A piece may not occupy or jump over squares occupied by another piece (their own or the opponent's). The player must move one of their pieces at least one square.

2. Placing discs

After moving the piece, the player places a disc of their color on the square from which the moved piece started, and on all squares it crossed. No disc is placed on the square where the piece ends its move.

Example captions: White's move. Two white discs are placed. / Black's move. Two black discs are placed.

3. Removing discs

If during its move the piece crosses squares on which there were opponent's discs, the player removes these discs from the board and returns them to their owner, and places their own discs on the vacated squares. If the piece crosses squares holding the player's own discs, they stay in place. Each square may hold no more than one disc.

If a piece's move ends on a square holding a disc (whether their own or the opponent's), that disc is removed from the board and returned to its owner. A square occupied by a piece cannot hold a disc.

Example captions: White's move. One black disc is returned to its owner, five white discs are placed on the board. / Black's move. Three white discs are returned to their owner, four black discs are placed on the board.

End of the Game

The game ends as soon as one of the players manages to place all of their discs. The loser moves first in the next game.

Variant: Playing for Points

By agreement, a game can consist of several rounds. At the end of each round, the winner receives as many points as the number of discs the loser has left. The game ends when one of the players reaches a previously agreed number of points.

Variant: Diagonal Moves

The pieces are set up on the board with marks face up. In addition to normal moves (vertical and horizontal), each piece may make one diagonal move during a game. After that it is turned over (mark face down) and until the end of the game may make only vertical and horizontal moves.
