Objective

Willy Wonka has hidden Golden Tickets in some of his chocolate Wonka Bars. Finders of the Golden Tickets will receive a lifetime supply of chocolate and will be personally escorted on a tour of the mysterious factory by Mr. Wonka himself.

So, the search is on and Wonkamania has taken over! Strategically move around the game board and play combinations of Wonka Cards to gain as many Wonka Bars as you can before they run out! The more you collect, the better your odds of finding a Golden Ticket.

At the end of the game, everyone opens all the Wonka Bars they have collected during the game to see who has won a Golden Ticket!

Setup

Wonka Bars Setup

  1. Select the number of Wonka Bars and Golden Tickets needed for the game based on the number of players below. Any extra Wonka Bars and Golden Tickets remain in the box.
PlayersBlank Wonka BarsGolden Tickets
2341
3412
4483
5554

If you wish to play with more Golden Tickets feel free to customize your game and add more! But I recommend playing with these numbers for your first game.

  1. Place each Golden Ticket you're using in the game into a space on the bottom of a chocolate bar so it remains snug in place inside the chocolate bar.
  2. Slide each chocolate bar with a Golden Ticket into a Wonka Bar wrapper so the Golden Ticket is not visible.
  3. Slide each of the remaining chocolate bars into a Wonka Bar wrapper without adding any Golden Tickets.
  4. Shuffle all Wonka bars together into a pile so that you don't know which ones contain the Golden Tickets.

If this is your first time playing, work as a team to assemble the Wonka Bar wrappers so they can hold chocolate bars. Divide up all the wrappers among all players and tuck the large flap on the one end into the box, so each wrapper is ready to hold a chocolate Bar inside of it.

Game Setup

  1. Arrange all 9 game spaces in a 3x3 grid with SIDE A facing up. Always place them in the following order (numbered 1-9):

    • Top row: 1. Mr. Jopeck's Newsstand, 2. The Market, 3. Wonka Factory Gates
    • Middle row: 4. TV Shop, 5. City Square, 6. Candy Shop
    • Bottom row: 7. Snack Delivery, 8. Classroom, 9. Auction House

Once you're familiar with the game, try playing Side B for an even greater challenge!

  1. Place the Willy Wonka pawn on the Wonka Factory Gates space (#3). Place the Wonka die nearby. It is used to move Willy Wonka during the game.

  2. Each player chooses a player mat and its corresponding pawn for the game. Each character shown on the player mat has their own special ability and money allowance listed on the mat.

  3. Each player places their pawn on the Classroom space.

  4. Place the money tokens near the board. Each player then collects money tokens to match the allowance shown on their player mat and places the tokens on the wallet section on their board.

  5. Place the Draw/Discard board in reach of all players. Shuffle the deck of Wonka Cards and place it face-down on the Draw spot on the board.

  6. Each player draws 6 Wonka Cards for their starting hand. They look at them but keep them hidden from the other players.

  7. The player who most recently ate a chocolate bar goes first. That player discards 2 Wonka Cards of their choice to the Discard Pile on the Draw/Discard board, so they have 4 cards to begin the game.

Everyone else discards 1 card so they have 5 cards to begin the game. All discarded cards are always placed face-up in a stack.

Now you're ready to play!

How to Play

Players take turns. Every turn is played in this order:

  1. Take 2 actions.
  2. Check if Willy Wonka is on your space.
  3. End your turn.

Take 2 Actions

On your turn, you must take 2 actions. Choose from the 3 actions below. You may take these actions in any order and you may take the same action twice:

  • Discard a card to move one space.
  • Play a card.
  • Refill your hand.

Use your actions strategically to maximize how many Wonka Bars you can grab before the pile runs out!

Option 1 - Discard a card to move one space

Place a card from your hand onto the Discard Pile face-up and ignore what is written on the card. Then, move your pawn to any adjacent space—but you may not move diagonally.

When landing on a space you may also play the effect shown on that space as part of this action. Each space has its own unique effect.

Rules for Moving Your Pawn:

  • You may only play the effect on the space when you move to that space. You must leave the space and return to it in order to play that effect again.
  • You do not have to play the effect on a space if you do not choose to.
  • You may not move diagonally to another space.

Option 2 - Play a Card

Play a Wonka Card from your hand to play the effect written on the card. Place it below your player mat, and not on the Discard Pile to play it.

If a card allows you to play more than 1 card at a time it is still 1 action.

If a card allows you to move your pawn to another space, you may also play the effect on the space you moved to. The effect of the space does not count as an action.

If you play a card to move multiple spaces, then you may only play the effect on the final space you land on.

Option 3 - Refill Your Hand

Draw new cards into your hand up to a maximum of 4 cards.

You cannot use this action to draw additional cards if you have a hand with 4 or more cards during play.

2. Check for Willy Wonka

After performing your two actions, check to see if the Willy Wonka pawn is on the same space as your pawn. If he is, he gives you 1 Wonka Bar for free!

Then, roll the Wonka die and place Willy Wonka on the space with the same number (even if it is the same space he is currently on).

Space numbers are found on the top right of every game space.

3. End Your Turn

After checking the location of the Willy Wonka pawn, your turn is over. Play passes to the player to the left, and they begin their turn.

Play continues with players taking turns until the last Wonka Bar is collected.

Character Abilities

Do not forget about your special character abilities found on your player mat! You may use your special abilities in conjunction with your actions to give you an advantage.

If your character ability is used during play it does not count as one of your actions!

An Example Turn...

Violet starts her turn on TV Shop. For her first action, she discards a card to move her pawn one space to City Square.

When she lands there, she chooses to play the effect on that space. This lets her draw 3 cards from the Draw Pile into her hand, then discard any 2 cards from her hand.

Then, for her second action she plays an Exploding Candy card by placing it below her Player Mat. This makes a player of her choice return 2 Wonka Bars to the Wonka Bar pile.

She has performed her 2 actions, so Violet checks to see what space Willy Wonka is on. Since she is on the same space as Mr. Wonka, he gives her 1 Wonka Bar!

After collecting that Wonka Bar, Violet rolls the Wonka die. She rolls a 6, so Willy Wonka moves to the #6 game space—the Candy Shop!

Wonka Card Types

There are 3 types of Wonka Cards. Each card has an icon in its top left corner to indicate its type.

  • Sweet Cards are more useful if you plan out when to play them and when to hold them.
  • Rowdy Cards allow you to interfere with other players. They work best if you pay attention to what other players do.
  • Mystery Cards are some of the best ways to get lots of Wonka Bars!

Sweeping Cards

Some Wonka Cards or game spaces, like the TV Shop and Auction House, let you sweep cards to gain things like Wonka Bars.

Sweep cards by moving cards you have already played from below your Player Mat to the Discard Pile, face up.

You will select what cards to sweep based on their type (i.e., Rowdy, Sweet, or Mystery Cards). Some spaces only allow you to sweep certain types of cards to gain Wonka Bars, Wonka Cards, or Money tokens.

When sweeping, select which cards to move based on the type of card needed for the effect. You do not have to sweep all your cards below your Player Mat, just the ones needed for the effect. If you do not have the type of cards or number of cards needed, then you may not sweep any cards.

For Example...

For her first action, Veruca plays 2 Invisible Gumdrop cards to get 2 Wonka Bars. Since you can play more than one Invisible Gumdrop at a time, that counts as just one action. For her second action, she plays a Slingshot Gum card to move 1 space to the Auction House.

Veruca doesn't get to use the second effect on the Slingshot Gum card (the part that steals Wonka Cards from other players) because nobody else is on that space. But that's okay, because it's part of her strategy! She played the Slingshot Gum card so she could have another Rowdy card below her Player Mat. That's because, after moving to the Auction House, Veruca chooses to play the effect on that space—she can now sweep up to 4 Rowdy cards to gain that same number of Wonka Bars!

Veruca sweeps all 3 Rowdy cards from below her player mat and places them on the Discard Pile—which gives her 3 Wonka Bars in total. So Veruca's two actions this turn gained her a total of 5 Wonka Bars!

Collecting Wonka Bars

When you collect Wonka Bars, randomly draw them from the nearby pile and place them near your Player Mat in your own score pile. Do not open the Wonka Bars just yet.

Keep all Wonka Bars in their wrappers until the last Wonka Bar is claimed and the game ends.

When drawing Wonka Bars, DO NOT PEEK to see which Wonka Bar may have a Golden Ticket. Honesty is a virtue, children.

Game End

When a player claims the last Wonka Bar, the game is over. It is now time to open all the Wonka Bars!

Players all count down and open their Wonka Bars at the same time to see who has a Golden Ticket.

If you find a Golden Ticket, YOU WIN!

Depending on how many players are playing, there may be more than one winner.

If you happen to find more than 1 Golden Ticket, then choose who to share it with—or if you prefer, just keep it and don't give it away.

The Scrumdidilyumptious Game Variant

Once you have gotten the feel for the game and are looking for some more flavor, try playing with some new ingredients! Flip the City Square space to Side B. AS LONG AS City Square is on SIDE B, you may also flip over any other tiles to their Side B for their different effects as well. Whether playing Side A or Side B, make sure you do not rearrange the game spaces when flipping them over—they should always remain in the same order.

Game Reference

Game Spaces

Game spaces are placed in a 3x3 grid numbered 1-9. Each space has a Side A and a Side B. Player will play Side A when first playing the game.

Each space has a different effect. When you move to a space you may play the effect of the space you land on. If you move more than 1 space on an action, you may only play the effect of the space you finally land on.

Player Mats

Each player mat features a character that has their own allowance and special ability. Players should use these features during the game. Using your special ability does not count as one of your actions on your turn.

Augustus Gloop — Allowance 5

If your hand ever becomes empty, you may refill your hand for free.

Violet Beauregarde — Allowance 5

Whenever you gain 2 or more Wonka Bars at a time, you may draw a card.

  • This doesn't count if you gain Wonka Bars from different actions (i.e., not at once).
  • Playing multiple cards counts as one action (like with the Invisible Gumdrop).

Charlie Bucket — Allowance 3

Whenever you sweep cards, you may move 1.

  • You can activate the space you land on!
  • You'll move exactly 1, no matter how many cards you sweep at once.

Mike Teevee — Allowance 5

If you spend both of your actions playing Rowdy Cards, you may take a third action.

  • This is only allowed once per turn.
  • Playing multiple cards counts as one action (like with the Invisible Gumdrop).

Veruca Salt — Allowance 8

When you draw cards, you may draw 1 extra.

  • This means if you'd draw 2 cards, you'll draw 3 total instead. Or, if you'd draw 4 cards, you'll draw 5 instead.
  • Drawing the bonus card doesn't let you draw another bonus card. Don't be greedy, Veruca!
  • This works with resting as long as you have fewer than 4 cards in your hand.
