  • "Guess the Theme?" uses: pattern/theme cards, Outfit Theme cards, clothing shape cards, tokens A to F, scoring sheets (and a pen or pencil, not included). The scoring chips are not used.
  • "The Editor's Request" uses: pattern/theme cards, clothing shape cards. Scoring chips are used.

"Guess the Theme?"

Game Overview

Layer cards of shapes and patterns to create outfits that represent the theme! After dealing out five random pattern cards, arrange the 6 theme cards and assign a theme to each player using the Outfit Theme cards. Each player takes an outfit shape card that seems to fit the theme as best as possible and combines it with the pattern cards to coordinate the fashion. When everyone has finished, the other players vote on which theme they guessed was represented, and the results are announced. Points are awarded to both the player who guesses the correct answer and the person who was asked to guess. The player with the highest total score wins!

Setup

Write players' names other than yourself on the scoring sheet. Each player takes 1 scoring sheet and a pen or pencil (not included). Then write the name of each other player in the first line of the scoring sheet. The scoring chips are not used, so they are put away in a box and everything else in the box is taken out.

Steps

1. Deal out 5 pattern cards to each player. Shuffle the pattern/theme cards well and deal 5 cards randomly to each player, with the pattern side face up. (Patterns are on the back, themes are on the front.) Place the rest of the pattern/theme cards together out of the way.

2. Reveal and place out 6 theme cards. Place 6 pattern/theme cards, theme side up. Place each of the letter tokens A-F under the theme card. The theme placed on top of the letter B token becomes the B theme.

3. Draw 1 Outfit Theme card for each player. Each player draws 1 Outfit Theme card. After players check their own cards without revealing it to others, the outfit theme card is placed face down in front of them. (Don't reveal this side to others.) The card is, for example, an A, so I create an A theme, Party Outfit!

4. Place and take the clothes shape card. All 12 clothing shape cards are placed out so that they are visible to all players, and everyone points to 1 card they want at the same time.

  • If only 1 player chooses a card, that player takes it.
  • If 2 or more players choose the same card, they play rock-paper-scissors. Whoever wins the rock-paper-scissors game takes the card, and the loser takes 1 card from the remaining cards.
  • If you tie: rock, paper, scissors again!

Let's take the second card in the same way, so that there will be 1 each of tops and bottoms: a top and a bottom outfit.

5. Layer the shapes and pattern cards to create outfits that represent the theme! Layer the 5 pattern cards and the top and bottom clothing shape cards to create the perfect outfit for the theme. Let's create an outfit that gets the theme across!

  • Layer and combine: you can layer as many as you want.
  • Displace: showing different parts of the pattern. The card may protrude outside of the clothing shape card.
  • Rotate: vertical, horizontal, and even diagonal.
  • In each player's hand, the pattern cards can be used freely, front and back.
  • Hint: if it's hard, it might be fun to present 1 "featuring point" as a hint! ("I didn't use these patterns!")

6. Guess whose outfit represents which theme (A-F). When everyone's outfits are complete, guess who represents which theme (A-F)! Write A to F on the scoring sheet, in the column below each player's name on your scoring sheet, which theme was expressed. Players should take a blind guess if it takes too long to figure it out.

7. Announce the results. Results are announced for each theme in turn (by themes A-F). Players' guesses on the theme are presented first, and then the player who created the theme will reveal the outfit theme card to all. Mark the scoring sheet. The number of guesses and guesses received is the score:

  • Each player that has guessed correctly receives 1 point.
  • The players whose outfit was up for guesses receive 1 point for each correct guess by other players.

Example: if you guess 3 correctly for another player's outfit theme and get 2 players to guess the correct answer for your outfit, you get a total of 5 points (3 correct guesses of others' outfit themes = 3 points, plus your outfit guessed correctly by 2 other players = 2 points; total 5 points).

Game End

After the results of all players' outfits have been announced, the scores are added up. The player with the highest score wins. In case of a tie, all of them win. Congratulations!

Recommend repeating steps 1-7 three times and playing for the overall score! There are columns for 3 rounds on the scoring sheet.

Preparations between rounds: Collect the clothing shape cards, pattern cards, and outfit theme cards from each player. Place 6 cards from the pattern cards used this time as the next theme cards. The remaining cards are moved out of the way. The cards used as theme cards are added under the unused pattern/theme cards. Repeat from step 1. If you run out of unused pattern/theme cards, shuffle the used cards well and deal them out.

"The Editor's Request"

Game Overview

One player will play the role of editor-in-chief and the other players will be editors. The winner is the one who expresses a fashion outfit that fits the theme (the magazine's feature theme) given by the editor-in-chief. The editor-in-chief is free to decide the theme. Combine the limited number of cards with clothing shapes and patterns to create an outfit that fits the theme decided by the editor-in-chief, and present it to everyone! The outfit that the editor-in-chief thinks fits best is awarded points.

The role of the editor-in-chief changes each turn, and the player with the highest score at the end of the round wins.

Setup

Use the pattern/theme cards, clothing shape cards and scoring chips; put away what is not needed.

Steps

1. Choose the starting editor-in-chief. 1 player will play the role of the starting editor-in-chief. The most colorfully dressed player is the editor-in-chief!

2. Announce the theme. The editor-in-chief is free to announce any style they would like (for example, "a gal-style outfit!"). Decide on one theme for this outfit and announce it to everyone. If you can't think of one, refer to a theme card.

3. Deal 5 pattern cards to each player. Shuffle the pattern/theme cards well and deal 5 cards randomly to each player except the editor-in-chief, so that the pattern is face-up. The editor-in-chief does not take cards.

4. Place and take clothing shape cards. Place all 12 clothing shape cards so that they are visible to all players. Starting from the player to the left of the editor-in-chief, in a clockwise direction, take 1 card from the placed clothing shape cards. When the player to the right of the editor-in-chief finishes his/her turn, starting with that player, everyone takes 1 more card, this time in reverse order, so that the tops and bottoms are outfits (each player has a top and a bottom). Cards may be taken top or bottom first.

5. Make an outfit and present it! Layer the 5 pattern cards and the top and bottom clothing shape cards to create the perfect outfit for the theme! Let's layer, shift, and rotate some of those pattern cards! Once everyone's outfit is complete, present your outfit in clockwise order, starting from the player to the left of the editor-in-chief. Introduce your outfit's special features and show that it fits the theme perfectly! When it's time to present, show off how great your outfit is!

6. The editor-in-chief picks one outfit that fits best and gives it an "Excellent!" and gives it a scoring chip. The editor-in-chief also tells what he/she thought was excellent about it.

7. Rotate roles. All cards are returned to their starting state. The role of editor-in-chief is replaced by the player to the left, and steps 2-6 are repeated.

Game End

Repeat with different editors, and the player with the most points after one round wins. At the end of one round, the player with the most scoring chips when everyone has finished playing the role of editor-in-chief wins! In case of a tie, both win!

2-Player Cooperative Game (separate official rules sheet)

This section is transcribed from the separate official one-page "2-player cooperative game" sheet. "Guess the theme?" rules are adapted for 2 players. Read it together with the Rules.

Setup

The scoring sheets are not used. Put them back in the box, and take out all other components. Prepare two scoring chips.

How to Play

The same rules apply as in steps 1-5 of "Guess the Theme?":

  1. Deal out 5 pattern cards to each player.
  2. Reveal and place out 6 theme cards (A-F).
  3. Draw 1 Outfit Theme card for each player.
  4. Place and take the clothes shape card.
  5. Layer the shapes and pattern cards to create outfits that represent the theme!

6. When both outfits are complete, guess which theme (A-F) the other player represents! Call out "Ready, go!" and point to the theme card!

7. Record your results with scoring chips! Prepare two scoring chips:

  • If both your guesses are correct: place down the 2 scoring chips with the pattern side up.
  • If only one guesses correctly: place down 1 scoring chip with the pattern side up, and the other blank side up.
  • If both your guesses are wrong: place down 2 scoring chips with the blank side up.

Repeat steps 1-7 three times, and then calculate your results by counting the number of scoring chips showing the pattern side!
