Legion
A Legion is composed of 3 different Cohorts. A Cohort is made of Unit Cards of the same type. There are 7 different types of Unit Cards in the game: Praetorian (3), Catapult (3), Centurion (3), Sagittarii (4), Equites (4), Legionary (5) and Velites (6). The number on the top right side of each card is the amount of Unit Cards of this type required to assemble a Cohort.
There cannot be multiple Cohorts of the same type in a Legion.
Set Up
Shuffle the cards; place the deck face-down in the center of the table.
The starting player is the one who last saw a peplum movie. Turns are played clockwise.
Turn
During a turn, each player does the following:
- Take 2 cards from the deck, look at them, give one to a player of your choice, and keep the other card.
- (Optional) Place a card from your hand face-up on the table, as part of a Cohort.
- Discard extra card(s) of your choice, until you reach the maximum hand size (4).
Additional Rules
Discard Pile: Cards are discarded at the end of the player's turn. Discarded cards are placed face-up.
Distribute: Cards are distributed freely to the other players of your choice; several/all cards can be given to the same player. If no player can receive distributed cards (due to the Praetorian's effect), they should be discarded instead.
Maximum Hand Size: Default is 4 cards.
Cohort Effects: When at least one card is played in a Cohort, the effect of this type of Unit becomes active until the end of the game. A player can choose to start building more than 3 Cohorts but will then permanently suffer from more than 3 effects. Remember, each of the Cohorts must be of a different Unit type.
Each time a player completes a Cohort, he turns this set face down and the effect of that Unit type is no longer active. Finally he chooses a player. This player discards all the cards from their hand.
End of the Game
The game ends when a player completes his third Cohort. He has completed a Legion and is declared the winner.
Effects Summary
Praetorian: You cannot receive any card from any player. Cohort Size: 3
Catapult: When you draw the 2 cards from the deck, place them face down without looking at them and give one of them randomly to a player of your choice. You take the other card. Cohort Size: 3
Centurion: Play with open hand from now on. Place your hand cards face up on the table. Cohort Size: 3
Sagittarii: Draw the 1st of the 2 cards from the top of the discard pile and the 2nd card from the main deck. If there is no discard pile, then you draw just 1 card from the main deck. Cohort Size: 4
Equites: Your maximum hand size is now 2 cards. Cohort Size: 4
Legionary: Discard all Primus Pilus in your hand and/or part of a Cohort. Cohort Size: 5
Velites: At the beginning of your turn, distribute the top card from the main deck to a player of your choice without seeing that card and then draw the 2 cards and distribute as normal. Cohort Size: 5
Primus Pilus
Primus Pilus: You choose one of the following effects for this card:
a) Use as a "Joker" that can be played instead any other card in a Cohort. After you use the Primus Pilus, distribute your hand to other players.
b) Discard Primus Pilus, choose a card that is part of a Cohort of a player of your choice and discard it to the discard pile.
Sagittarii & Catapult Combo: Assuming you have both cards triggered in front of you. You draw 1 card from the main deck, and 1 from the discard pile (if there is a card) but you do not see them and you give 1 card to a player of your choice. If there is no card in the discard pile, then you draw just 1 card from the main deck and you give it to a player of your choice.
Transcription notes: the source's Legion section reads "There are 7 different types"; the printed figure is rendered faintly in the scan and was read as 7, matching the seven unit types listed. The source gives Velites a Legion requirement of (6) but a Cohort Size of 5 on the Velites effect; both figures are transcribed as printed.
