The Set-up
Number of Event cards for a 3-player game = 9 Number of Event cards for a 4-player game = 12 Number of Event cards for a 5-player game = 15 Number of Event cards for a 6-player game = 18
A. Shuffle the 30 Event cards and place the proper number of cards, depending on the number of players, face down in a pile in the middle of the table. The remaining cards are returned to the box, face down. They will not be used during this game.
B. Shuffle the 50 Object cards and deal 3 to each player. The remaining cards are placed face down, in a pile, in the middle of the table, beside the Event card pile.
C. Randomly deal to each player a Team card, face down. The players must not reveal their team before the end of the game. To do so, take as many Team cards as the number of players requires, evenly divided between the two teams (the "Beta Lambda" and the "Darwin & Dragons"). In case of an odd number of players, one of the two teams will have one more member than the other. All in all, the possible Team configurations are as follow: 3 players > 2 and 1 • 4 players > 2 and 2 • 5 players > 3 and 2 • 6 players > 3 and 3.
D. The player who last met a Zombie is the first player. If none, just pick the youngest. Then, play clockwise for the remainder of the game.
The Game Turn
E. The active player draws the first Event card of the Event card pile, reads it to the other players and places it, face up, in the middle of the table.
F. The same player must now take up the challenge of explaining in less than a minute, how he successfully escaped from the situation detailed in the Event card he just drew, using a predetermined number of Object cards he has in hand. The number of cards he MUST use is shown on the back of the next Event card of the pile (the one that will be drawn by the next player).
The Vote
G. When the active player is done with his recounting of his chilling experience, the other players will vote to determine whether or not the story was convincing. Was he really able to use the objects in this manner? Was the recounting convincingly coherent?
Note: If the active player is so astounded that he cannot utter a word to share his experience, his challenge is automatically considered as failed.
H. To vote, the players extend a hand in front of them. And on the count of three, they all at once cast their vote: Thumb up for a Yes, and thumb down for a No.
I. If at least half of the votes are a Yes, then the active player has successfully passed the test and earns the Event card as a reward. The Object cards he used are discarded and he draws from the draw pile as many new Object cards as necessary to have 3 in hand.
J. If more than half of the votes are a No, the challenge is failed and the Event card is discarded. The Object cards used are discarded as well and the active player draws as many new ones from the draw pile as necessary to have 3 in hand.
K. Then, a new game turn begins (going back to step E) with the player on the left of the active player becoming the new active player (hence rotating clockwise).
The End of the Game
L. When the last Event card of the pile is drawn, the active player must use all three of his Object cards to complete this last game turn. Then the game is over.
M. All players reveal their team.
N. Each team sums up the number of Event cards obtained by its members. The team with the most Event cards wins the game.
O. If the number of players is odd, only sum up for each team the number of Event cards won by the player having the most and by the one having the less.
P. In a 3-player game, one team has a single member. In this case, his grand total is twice the number of Event cards he won.
Q. If the two teams are tied, then all players win as they have proved that they are real survivors!
